A number of women’s rights and LGBT organizations based in Chicago have expressed their frustration with the Pitchfork Music Festival’s choice to include California-based Hip Hop group Odd Future on their festival roster.
According to CMJ.com, the organizations are upset with the festival for choosing to include artists whose music sometimes includes lyrics that refer to violence against women.
“There has recently been much debate regarding one band in particular, Odd Future, whose lyrics are extremely violent toward women (as well as other groups of people),” read a message posted online by the organization Between Friends. “While we don’t agree with this, it is their art, and we’d like to offer a counterpoint and continue to help people that are being affected by the violence they describe.”

During the Pitchfork Music Festival, Between Friends will pass out 5,000 hand fans to festival attendees. Each hand fan will include a message about violence against women and resources for women to find help.
The Pitchfork Music Festival will take place in Chicago’s Union Park from July 15 to July 17.
