Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 4/3/2011

"It's Pittsburgh pimpin'," as Wiz Khalifa meets massive expectations and Mac Miller sells over 10,000 digital EP units. Snoop Dogg scores a Top 10, and E-40 gas-brake dips with three new chart spots.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania emcee Wiz Khalifa's major label debut, Rolling Papers sold approximately 200,000 first-week units as projected. The DXnext alum and Atlantic/Rostrum Records scored 198,000 overall units on the album which features Too Short, Curren$y and production from Jim Jonsin. The release came in at #2, behind only Britney Spears' Femme Fatale, which sold an additional 80,000 units.

Chris Brown continued to enjoy his F.A.M.E. The Jive Records release passed the 350,000 benchmark, on an album that features emcees Ludacris, Busta Rhymes and Tyga.

West coast Hip Hop icon Snoop Dogg scored a Top 10 debut with his eleventh official solo album, Doggumentary. The Long Beach, California emcee included production from Kanye West and Scott Storch, on an album that includes names like Eastsidaz' Goldie Locc, Devin The Dude and Kokane.

Climbing three spots to #13, Rihanna's  Loud  pushes well past platinum. Lupe Fiasco fell six spots to #16. The Chicago, Illinois emcee may have had his share of disagreements with Atlantic Records over the content and direction of his third album, Lasers, however Lasers pushes past 300,000 units, the first 2011 Rap album to do so. Lupe's album features label-mate Trey Songz and longtime 1st & 15th singer Sarah Green.

Revenue Retrievin': Graveyard Shift sold slightly better than its counterpart, by less than 1,000 units. The work features Bun B, Slim Thug, T-Pain and Click band-mate B-Legit. Meanwhile, Revenue Retrievin': Overtime Shift features the entire Click, Devin The Dude and R.B.L. Posse's Black C.

Another Rostrum Records artist, DXnext alum and Pittsburgh emcee impressed the charts with a #54 debut. Mac Miller's On And On And Beyond EP was a digital-only release with little marketing, but the independent project cleared 10,000 first-week units.

Chef Raekwon fell 50 spots to #133 with Shaolin Vs. Wu-Tang, a concept in development since 2007. The album has achieved 50,000 overall units. Producers include Evidence, Oh No and legendary House deejay Kenny Dope.

    200k 1st wk hardly a flop...especially off the strength of 1 single

There is some awful newjack rappers poping up everywhere with this swagg type shit. Nothing wrong with abit of style and swagger but these suckers look mighty colourful, even their names. What about showing off the depth of knowledge that your brain has the capacity to hold and speak the truth about whats going on in the universe

  • FLOP

Wiz flopped straight up. Drake and Minaj put out sick numbers. Why, because the labels promoted the artist not the single. Atlantic goofed on promoting Wiz. They just pumped money into black and yellow instead of developing Wiz. Wiz went away from the music that got him the buzz in the first place. He started sucking industry dick and his sales hurt as a result. His album sucked, if he stuck to his guns he could have had much better sales.

    • Anonymous

200k Units is NOT a flop. I could see if Jay or Em sold 200k units, then itd be flop cuz they normally do better. But for a major label debut, new artist, and in this climate where niggas barely going gold? This was sucessful.

    • uh no

maybe its just because wiz just isnt as good as an artist? this dude sounds the same in every single song, and talks about the same shit every verse. maybe the dude should stop coasting and try change up his shit. drakes album is great, whereas this wiz one is just OK

PEEP GAME: Mac Miller sells over 10,000 digital EP units. 10,000 x $7 from itunes = $70,000 - Rostrum Records is doing it's thing.

wiz is featured on macs songs, sings his hooks mac is riding on wiz khalifas coat tails mac miller is the jewish wiz khalifa

    • Anonymous

why would wiz get shit? he didnt do anything for mac. he got his own deal, wasnt featured on any of wizes songs, and did his own thing.

    • Anon1

Yes but iTunes keeps a cut as well as Atlantic and Wiz probably gets a cut. Fans need to realized rappers get pennies on the dollar for their albums. Unless of course you go indie which is why so many are taking that route. Push your own music with no limitations or retarded label structures and you can make much more but sell much less.

I copped that Pharoahe Monch album. It's probably the best album this year so far. Still haven't gotten around to buying that Shoalin vs. Wu Tang album. I hope it has that old school Wu sound. For a pop/rap heavy album I kind of liked Lasers. At first I was gonna say it was wack but now that I listened to what Lu was saying its not too bad. It's just too....mainstream if that makes any sense

    • Doubl Negative

I think the word you're lookin' for is "ambivalent", which pretty much describes my feelings about most new rap LPs like Lasers. The music on that disk and Rollin' Papers et al is incredibly attenuated and these albums are made purely for avaricous reasons, not to preserve and enrich the hip-hop art-form. Hip-hop's goldern-era ('86-'96) is missed by thirty-sometnings, not just be it was our halcon days when we were young, but because great acts like Wu, Cypress, Cube and De La made credible hip-hop and also shifted units without compromsin' their artistry. The only new emcee I can invertin' hip-hop back to its former glory is Jay-Electronica. Let's hope Jay can step up to the mantle, and doesn't suffer the same label politics that befell Saigon and Papoose.
