Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 3/13/2011

The predictions were right: Lupe Fiasco crushes the charts. Raekwon very nearly scored a Top 10 debut, and how fast can Eminem get to four million?

Lupe Fiasco pulled the #1 spot as planned this week. The Chicago, Illinois emcee may have had his share of disagreements with Atlantic Records over the content and direction of his third album, Lasers, however the work sold over 200,000 first-week units. Lupe's album features label-mate Trey Songz and longtime 1st & 15th singer Sarah Green.

Lasers beat out the #2 chart position, Adele's 21, by over 70,000 units.

Floetry alum Marsha Ambrosious' long-delayed solo debut maintained a Top 10 position. The songstress is widely known in Hip Hop for her tenure as an artist at Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment, as well as her feature work with Game, Slum Village and Busta Rhymes.

Chef Raekwon's third project in a year and a half nearly scored a Top 10 debut. Rae's Shaolin Vs. Wu-Tang, a concept in development since 2007, sold almost 30,000 first-week units. Released on his own IceH20 imprint, and distributed through EMI, the Wu-Tang Clan member's fifth solo work features Jim Jones, Black Thought and a reunion with Nas. Producers include Evidence, Oh No and legendary House deejay Kenny Dope.

Recurring chart-toppers Bruno Mars and Rihanna closed out the upper-crust of the list with Doo-Wops & Hooligans and Loud respectively.

* Please note: figures below approximated to nearest thousandth.

Young Money's Nicki Minaj continues to carry her solo debut past the million-mark. Pink Friday is the DXnext alum's record-breaking feat for a female in Hip Hop, both as a onetime #1 album, and consecutive weeks in the Top 10. Nicki's mentor, Lil Wayne held in at #39 with his September 2009 digital album-turned-CD, I Am Not A Human Being. A twitpic of an internal Cash Money Records release schedule indicated that Wayne's next album may come as soon as May of this year.

A collaborator to both Nicki and Wayne, Eminem's Recovery came in at #19. The top-selling album of 2010 continues to surge towards four million sold.

Kanye West's acclaimed My Beautiful Twisted Dark Fantasy was at #32 this week. Another Chicago emcee, 'Ye has previously formed a side-project with Lupe Fiasco and Pharrell, Child Rebel Soldier (C.R.S.). An artist who's worked with Kanye, B.o.B., may have spent his last week on the Top 200, after a gold-selling run, for his debut, The Adventures of Bobby Ray.

  • bluerazor

All my real niggaz cop wutang vs shoalin

  • DR Jam

I don't understand why Ghost and Rae last albums, both, almost got unnoticed releases. Surely I don't the MKT budget is huge, but they need to do a better job creating buzz in this day and age. And when I looked at them, just the box art, I honestly thought they were one of those "just get it out there" albums. I still bought Rae's on day one, 'cause I went to the store to get Lupe's LASERS. Only to realize that Shaolin vs Wu-Tang is the bomb, and LASERS is a disappointment. PS: haven't gotten Ghost Q4'10 album yet, but I had a few reviews and it looks like another solid contribution.

  • Jeremy Orr

I said on here that while I thought Lupe's album was "dummed down" its his most complete album because it appeals to a more wider audience. Just goes to show you the power of "radio-friendly songs" lol but are we getting dumber as rap fans?

    • money on my mind dick in your ass most niggaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

never tought to say about a nigga that you really suck nigga maybe you should study your unstudy nigga

    • EddieMurrrphy

our white girl brethren probably are as for the rest of us, are you winning? do you feel smart?

  • ilexx

Sometimes I dont understand some fans... Instead of some fans being happy they say all types of BS like "the label is holding him back" lol which is funny because the label doesnt benefit from holding him back at all. He is an asset for THEM and they need him to INCREASE in value, they need him to be more valuable ON THE MARKET. So while the label didnt plan the protest they DAMN sure were going to put a marketing plan in motion that was going to feed off of it which is why we saw the pictures of Lupe and head bitch over there at Atlantic hugging and shit. Its good press and coverage for an album that they were going to eventually release. Then they played on the controversy to build more support from current fans and snipe out a couple more fans. The label will use the success of his first week sales and continue to promote Lupe... We will see a few more videos, hear about a few more performances.. I mean shit we will be hearing about a major tour announcement soon. They will probably throw a few other Atlantic gems on tour with him like BOB, maybe Trey and maybe Bruno Mars... who knows... All three of them have had #1 hit singles in the past year so Lupe could snag a few of their fans and it would be dope BUT Lupe fans wont like that because thats selling out right!?!?!? ahahaha sometimes u just need to say fuck these niggaz and get money because if it was left up to you guys u would want Lupe rapping from a basement and not making any money ASLONG AS he puts out good music right? Lupe IS THE ONLY CONSCIOUS RAPPER U HAVE EVER SEEN take introspective and socially conscious lyrics and put it on a commercial album..... and then go #1! So this more than proves that while fans LIKE you and your music, they dont know SHIT about marketing it....

    • ilexx

Bro... I watched the entire Tavis Smiley interview and I read the complex interview.. Its not like I DONT know that Lupe said he "Loves and Hates" the album. He said while he listens to the album and he likes the music he cant separate what he went through to make the album and he hates it for that. But u seeee just like I said before.... Look out for the "Tour Date Announcement" and one day later its here.... http://www.hiphopdx.com/index/news/id.14459/title.lupe-fiasco-announces-tour-dates So trust me while I know how Lupe felt about the album before... NOW that its #1 is an entirely different scenario. His career is only going to get bigger, its inevitable.

    • Asafo

Lol whats funny is, if you've been paying attention to Lupe's interviews as of late..you'd CLEARLY realize that he'd prolly disagree with just about EVERYTHING you just typed. He's said plenty of times that he doesn't really like the album, he had nothing to do with most of the songs, and felt that he compromised too much. Check his interview with Tavis Smiley and COMPLEX.

    • ilexx

Actually EVERYTHING has to do with marketing... U market yourself daily... U market yourself to get a job, you market yourself when you are checkin for a girl... etc. Its all marketing. With that said... I dont think Lupe BOWED down to his fans. He taught his fans that u have to fight for what you want but the bigger lesson in life here is that sometimes its NOT only about what you want and sometimes you may have to compromise. Thats an important message to learn.. Also check the lyrics, as much as people say he dumbed it down, the fact is that MORE people are going to end up hearing the same message and have a better understanding of that message just because of the commercial backing.... Lupe 'Words I Never Said' - Opening 1st verse "I really think the war on terror is a bunch of bullshit Just a poor excuse for you to use up all your bullets How much money does it take to really make a full clip 9/11 building 7 did they really pull it Uhh, And a bunch of other cover ups Your childs future was the first to go with budget cuts If you think that hurts then, wait here comes the uppercut The school was garbage in the first place, thats on the up and up" and ending 1st verse "Limbaugh is a racist, Glenn Beck is a racist Gaza strip was getting bombed, Obama didn’t say shit Thats why I aint vote for him, next one either I’ma part of the problem, my problem is I’m peaceful And I believe in the people." Ending 2nd verse "Just listening to Pac aint gone make it stop A rebel in your thoughts, aint gon make it halt If you don’t become an actor you’ll never be a factor Pills with million side effects Take em when the pains felt Wash them down with Diet soda! Killin off your brain cells Crooked banks around the World Would gladly give a loan today So if you ever miss payment They can take your home away!" 3rd Verse "I think that all the silence is worse than all the violence Fear is such a weak emotion thats why I despise it We scared of almost everything, afraid to even tell the truth So scared of what you think of me, I’m scared of even telling you Sometimes I’m like the only person I feel safe to tell it to I’m locked inside a cell in me, I know that there’s a jail in you Consider this your bailing out, so take a breath, inhale a few My screams is finally getting free, my thoughts is finally yelling through" Those are POWERFUL SOCIAL CONSCIOUS lyrics right there but yet hardcore Lupe fans are stuck bitching about Alex Da Kid producing it and how POP it is... The fucking song is huge! and its more than a good look for Lupe... Lupe Fiasco has done something with this album that most havent done in their careers and the fans havent lost anything, Lupe didnt lose fans either (unless u count a handful of the hardcore ones who are going to DOWNLOAD his next album anyway) and the label is going to get paid. I am a Lupe fan and I am happy that that from a business stand point it did well because I know that means we will see more from Lupe in the near future because the label will want to capitalize off of this success. So nobody really lost at all, not the fans, not the label and certainly not Lupe... #theend

    • tha620hawk

Also, music is not about marketing. It's art and should be made by the creator, not the person who funds it.

    • tha620hawk

You're right. They made a hit album, but you know what the downside is? It is mediocre and nowhere near Lu's capabilities. His first 2 smashed this one, and anyone who has heard his mixtapes and albums knows that. Yeah they will make money off this, but who the fuck cares?!? Fans don't see the money. The label and Lu see's it. the whole point of this album was about him starting a generation of people that don't bow to what is in the now, but about what they want to do. He totally went against his own statements by laying down when the labels told him too. It defeats the whole purpose of the album in the first place. He contradicted himself on vinyl. It's sad to say the least

  • NRG

Congrats to Lupe!! Lasers is a good album...I am glad to see it do well on the charts too. This shit will blow up once he drops "I dont wanna care right now." That track is a straight banger.

  • Anonymous

wouldnt it have been a hell of a lot more better if he didnt sell the best he ever has behind a cd that he told yall was half assed and dumbed down? it feels like the label got their way and made out like bandits! they were right, right? "everywhere i go the love the bang bang flow"

  • Nico 3

All this time and Nicki Minaj has only sold 1.2 million? As for Raekwon, those are some shit ass numbers, considering he had Rick Ross, Nas and Banks on there.

  • dc_reppin

Atlantic's album topped the charts...but it isn't the real Lupe, Lasers was ok at best. Waitin on that food & liquor 2 to hopefully be a legit Lupe project from start to finish

  • Anonymous

Congratulations to the Greatest Rapper of All Time Lupe Fiasco! Forever a fan of the great artist Wasulu Jaco.

  • cardan

wow thats pretty good for RAE. thats a great album, real wu sounding shit. great numbers for independant lable. REKS is dope too!!!!

  • NY

Best albums of the week Raekwon & Reks, I'm actually surprised Raekwon's did this well because it had basically no promotion and I only knew about it because I look to see whats coming out. Lasers is a major disappointment obviously shows Atlantic trying for a pop hit. People need to stop supporting bad albums like Eminems Recovery, Nicki Minaj's Pink Friday & Lil Wayne's I Am Not a Human, all horrible albums some how still selling.

    • Anonymous

lupe was specifically yelling out that this wasnt good music! yall are ass backwards

    • EssDot Fuller

I feel you on the Raekwon album I still fuck wit obfcl ll. Lasers a major disappointment? Although it isn't f&l is far from a disappointment. Lupe just needs a different avenue, Majors is holding him back. Fuck sales as long as they puttin out GOOD Music!

    • koncept

just why is recovery a bad album? cuz u like tryin to sound cool by actin like u kno hip hop? ur just a hatin ass lil bitch Em's a legend. wordplay in that albums incredible dont give a fuck watchu say.

  • Keezie

Lasers sucks in the OPINIONS of SOME. Hip Hop heads are a fickle bunch. Good job to Lupe & The Chef. I wish Marsha would have put the original Butterfly song on her album. Remix was trash.

  • NJ

The American mainstream music industry ladies and gentlemen! When did people get so dumb? LASERS absolutely sucks, as does Pink Friday and so does Recovery, yet they are all massive chart hits....tells you a lot about this country.

  • Simple like ABC, 123

Congrats to Raekwon. Wu, wu, wu, wu...

  • Strategy

Seem's like it could be a potential strategy to sell albums. Think about it who has ever done this before. The label holds back your original work. Fans protest your label eventually creating a compromise. You them say you don't like your album the weak before its release. Controversy occurs. People eventually buy the album out of sympathy and support. And fans who like the new sound buy your work.

    • frann

yeah if he was awesome he wouldve went out like kurt cobbain now that fellar there aint no sell out..

    • Anonymous

i agree, the whole week before the album dropped he was crying about his label and wanting to kill himself to get all over the news and shit, making his fans feel sorry for him and buy the album out of pity

    • Anonymous

way too elaborate. Like WAY too elaborate. If you think all this shit was a stunt you are pathetically paranoid.

  • Its Um

Looking forward to LupEnd, hope it's not true with food n liquor part 2.

    • spice1

I dont know man F&L 2 might be a problem if he goes in like he did on the first one. Lupe can be one of the GOATs but i won't say that yet. Also lasers was just his pop album not dat bad but not worth coppin

  • Anonymous

LUPE'S FIRST NUMBER ONE ALBUM, AWESOME, i'm very happy that lasers is the number record this week i'm so happy for lupe

  • Anonymous

    WOW congrats lupe, nice!

  • da1

I'm glad to see lupe snag the top spot. I hope this album goes atleast gold, then when F&L2 drop, then it's platinum plaques all day all night.

  • JoeM

LUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUPE Not my favorite album, but tight still. I'm waiting for that F&F2 that shit is going to be DOPE. GO TO SLEEP BITCHES!

  • ptone814

LUPE! apologize 4 dumbing it, but look what has become of it, "all black everything" some old white southern woman humming it, took gaza strip's politics and put them #1 & shit, took the myth that concious dont equal commercial and mothafuckin pummeled it! lupe the goat!

  • anon

lupe's album is better than nicki minaj and that nonsense. Let's face it, bitch has got no talent, cat in the hat rhymes. Anybody that says "flow tight like a dick in the butt" has already lost all respect from me.

    • ok

nicki can rap but pink friday was a pop album she bout dat money, I'm not hatin on her but i wouldn't cop dat shit. But i do agree that lasers is way better

    • mybad

yeah no mercy sound like sum rushed shit to put out before he went to jail, would've been a whole lot better if his dumb ass didnt get locked down, but i'll say t.i. best album was urban legend, back when he was raw, but dude can still spit though, he went of on paper trail

    • Anonymous

    • tipster

u must be a hater if u get so mad to call someone you dont know names such as ignorant and moron. I come on this site to comment on hiphop and rappers not on people i dont know. Does t.i. make u that mad? u fucking lame nobody knows who u r so its easy for u to call me that. but anyway..he is pushin 800 like i said.I'm a fan not a internet gangsta so go ahead. Tip still is one of the best sellers for doin that well under his circumstances.

    • EddieMurrrphy

moron check the stats right now if your ignorant ass can find them. he is in the 450,000-460,000 range. go buy more of his deluxe editions and support your favorite coon up to that 800,000 number you so desire! (hhdx misprinted his numbers last week if thats what you are thinking)

    • tipster

im wonderin the same thing. I do know it dont matter thogh cause he's pushing 800,000 with really no promo and no single. They just started playin his singles on the radio cause the game misses him.

  • Kashif Ilyas

Finally a super-lyrical rapper claims the no.1 spot! sure its not his best work, but its still a dope album. everyone support Lupe!

    • EddieMurrrphy

i got a cd of it butt fuckers. and i'm not gay so i'm not interested in a lupe t-shirt. especially overpaying for one in a pre-oreder package whatd you pay indian 22.99? fuckin fool

    • Chiefen

    • EddieMurrrphy

did you get it off itunes? geek.

  • ilexx

HERE go all these dickheads going to say the label bought Lupe's album and all that BS...... U see if its a wealthy artist they say THEY bought em but because Lupe already admitted that his bank account doesnt reflect his critical success in the game NOBODY would say he bought em but the label did right? After the artist dissed the album and all that jazz u think the LABEL bought the album? WHY!?!?! To LOSE MORE MONEY!?!?!?! These mothafuckas are looking to RECOUP the money they spent on the album... NOT spend more money lol I aint surprised... I knew it was gonna happen because the truth is that the ALBUM IS SOLID! Yes ppl feel its tooo commercial for Lupe and all that but WHO gives a fuck what u think? Lupe scored a #1 album with an album he openly said he hates and there are more singles to come.... with 1st week #'s like this we should probably see a video for 'Words I never said' and 'Beautiful Lasers'... I know we will see one for the latter but I hope to see one for 'Words i never said' too.. Lupe big up u self..

    • ilexx

Anonymous all you are proving is that everybody has their opinion of what happened.. Factually we can see that Lupe went Pop on this album and Lupe already admitted to being forced into doing some records he didnt want to do necessarily. Let me ask you this though.... Do u think Lupe is mad that his album is #1 or fucking happy as fuck!?!?! He is going to see more consistent sales just due to his album being #1 and he will get more exposure and build a bigger fan base because of what has happened with Lasers... I cant understand why fans want to see an artist they like struggle. This album will only open more doors for Lupe so just be happy for the man and plus the music is NOT that bad at all.. There is ALOT of good music on the album, just not the music u expected to hear from Lupe.

    Mixtape B.O.B. > Album B.O.B.

    • Dustin6595

first of all i have almost every B.o.B mixtape and his album, and they have practically the same content on both of them. Your just gonna probably call it pop and mainstream because it got on the radio, but its the same type of shit from his mixtapes. The only song thats mainstream is Nothing On You, and the songs presentation is still far from the usual mainstream record.

  • Anonymous

i cant believe lupe has that many fans that would go out an buy that shit even after he said it sucked how does lupe fiasco sell 200 000 but raekwon, a legend only sells 30 000? shit aint right son

    • EddieMurrrphy

what are you trying to say to me down syndrome? my numbers werent too bad give or take.

    • Anonymous

imagine how many he would have sold if it didnt suck?!!!!! how many do you think he would have sold without that radio friendly shows goes on song he stole from modest mouse?

    • Anonymous

troll, how do 200k people buy lupes album?? BITCHH we protested that shit theres enough lupe fans to protest to his label to put that out and they gave in, so of course he can do major numbers

    • rideonemjixxer

Eddie, how are u gonna blast dude before on numbers, but u throw out some crazy made up calculation as to what 30,000 was compared to in the 90's? you are one asshole hypocrite internet troll, man. hate hate hate. go get a hobby or a job and try to enjoy the music.

    • EddieMurrrphy

it is what it is. those raekwon numbers are pretty good for today's age. people always say no promotion, well 29,000 indie w/ those circumstances that is strong. beat out gfk by a long shot, not that that is a good thing. its equal to 213,000-373,000 back in the mid to late nineties

  • L-Boogie

My nigga Rae killin it on an independent label, those numbers aren't bad at all considering that he's not a mainstream rapper. I'm surprised Lupe pulled it off, I didn't cop Lasers yet cuz everyone was telling me it's weak. Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang is pretty good though...Yo when is Common dropping his next album?????

    • da1

It would be killing it if he sold 90 something thousand on independant. But 29,000 lmao

    • EddieMurrrphy

called: the dreamer the believer. i think its 95% chance of dropping this year. its been sounding very promising. no i.d. and kanye hard at work on it!

  • godbody

Glad to see lupe get rewarded with great album sales. the album is nice tho it has a few pop joints on it. cant believe he didnt put "Super Lupe Rap" & "Im beamin" on it

  • EddieMurrrphy

way to go to my boy raekwon too! yeah smoked those other fools that came out this year (saigon, joell, talib) for the underground market. even beat gfk's latest by a substantial amount, good work. that was a great fuckin album, we appreciate it. by the way i bought the cd for every fuckin release i mentioned in this post, just to clear it up for you rectum wranglers.

  • lol

as much as i love lupe as an artist and his lyrics is up there with the greats we all know at least 180-200k were the label and this album was weak because it wasnt lupe. f&l 2 will be better

    • Its Sik

yeah man, lasers was commercial but i still copped it cuz i wanted to support my favourite artist. ur right tho, food and liquor 2 will be much betta. lupe said that its gna be the real him and hel only try and get radio play with around one single. he said beats are gna be much harder and the lyrics back to his complex brilliance

  • EddieMurrrphy

even when i saw that news wednesday. i could not believe that lupe would do that. and then, it happened. i supported (cd bitches) to help him get closer to actually putting that F&L2 g.a.r.a. album out sooner, around maybe later this year like he just said...

  • RealHipHopKy

I'm Glad Lupe is #1, even though his label made his album a little "Popish" and u can tell they made him not spit his more Complex Lyrics. All in all the Message of the Album and Lyrics are Still Light Years Ahead of any other #1 Hip Hop Artist, so Support Real Rap and Cop that Lasers, to Show that a Conscious Artist can still do Numbers!

  • Pingo

  • Ado Cob

    lol, everyone's a critic.

  • Mr Mogul

Well Lupe, I guess the label was right about the direction of your album.. lol

  • wouzi

the label brought them 200k copies

  • Anonymous

    Lupe will hit gold atleast

  • Anonymous

Lupe's second week sales will be drastically lower.

    • ilexx

YOUR an IDIOT for saying that because thats ONLY natural... the nature of things is to experience a 60% drop in sales in your 2nd week and that would mean he should do at least 80k next week. Lets see what happens though..... I have a big feeling he might do better than that.
