Ja Rule's Sentencing Postponed, Claims To Be At Work On "Pain Is Love 2" Album

As Ja Rule tells followers on Twitter that he'll be the latest sequel-maker, an error in his presentencing report buys him a few more weeks of freedom.

Queens, New York rapper Ja Rule has several projects in the works. In addition to The Renaissance Project, which is said to be Rule's first album in seven years, the rapper, presently in court, revealed this morning that he is planning a sequel to 2001's Pain Is Love.

Via Twitter, Ja Rule revealed that Pain Is Love 2 is among his future plans. Rule will make the album with longtime Murder Inc. producer 7 Aurelius, known for playing instruments on hits such as "Always On Time" and "Foolish" in the early '00s. The original Pain Is Love was a #1 debut album, Rule's third, and featured Ashanti, Missy Elliott and Charli Baltimore.

Others Queens acts to have made a sequel-minded album include Nas with Stillmatic and Capone-N-Noreaga with The War Report 2.

UPDATE (2/9): The New York Post reports Ja Rule’s sentencing hearing has been rescheduled for March 9 after an error in his presentencing report held up a hearing scheduled for Wednesday morning. Ja was scheduled to find out when his two-year sentence for weapons possession would begin at a hearing in an Manhattan courtroom today.

Nick - 1.) I doubt he owns his masters. If he did, I think he would have made better business choices. Plus he would have parted ways with Irv Gotti, who so totally abandoned this dude for shit like Lloyd. To take that loss on the chin was more a sign of Ja's frustration than his business savvy. Forget 50. Ja just stopped hustling. That said, everybody deserves a comeback, assuming they're still hungry.

To further this, 7 Aurelius (or Channel 7) is an eclectic genius on the boards. When he left Murder Inc in 2005 amid business disputes, didn't the quality of music deteriorate? Gotty scrambled to assemble a new cast to bring the Inc back but the ThunderKatz and Vanessa Carlton didn't reach the plateau their talent was assessed at. This is when Ja decided, "ok, let's move away from the negativity and poor sales of the INC to my own imprint". He created mPire and dropped, "Get Up". This is 2006. Fast forward five years and this guy is still on his grind and doing just fine. Why? Because he is ABOUT HIS BUSINESS. And as much as his cast of weed carriers don't have marketability, Harry-O and Merc Montana have potential above and beyond most enterprising rappers. And they have major label backing in Passport Gang/mPire. I know this sounds like a Ja Rule stan wrote this, but I follow this business and have no interest in people's personal success--but I love the music and I won't let people talk about someone who's made great music (and some crap music, at times). I look forward to Ja's career resurgence. I think a lot of people will be surprised. Just like they were with Fat Joe's last album.

Well said. I've always been a fan of Ja Rule since day one. I'm looking forward to hearing new music from him. Fuck what the 50 Cent dick riders think.

If you hate on Ja for his music, then that's subjective and you're entitled to your opinion. Let's use some hustlenomics for you: -Ja and Irv Gotty own their masters through Warner. Every time a Ja Rule song plays on the radio, he gets money. And Ashanti, Lloyd and Vanessa Carlton all know this. -Ja Rule has a major European following. Aside from his movie and TV deals, his major revenue stream is within his tours OUTSIDE OF THE United States. -mPire is a subsidiary of Murder Inc. Ja is going to drop Renaissance Project before he goes to the bink to keep fans wet for PIL2. Why? It's strategy. If you don't see what he's doing, then you're either just someone on the sidelines or someone who doesn't appreciate the hustle-aspect of the music business. He gave away "The Mirror" for free because it leaked. He could have sold at least 100,000 on the strength of "Uh Oh" and "Free" if he marketed the singles better. Instead, the album leaked and he said, "fuck it" and focused on his investments instead of the music. For a guy that supposedly fell off, he sure seems like he's living a lifestyle that most rappers aspire to. Industry rule #123: be about your business. Of any rapper that's under the mainstream radar, RULE is a hit-maker and he knows what the fuck he is doing. Let the music speak for himself. "Get The Money" is fire. Not his best work, but then again, anybody that has listened to Ja knows his bread and butter is within his albums. It's not about radio anymore. It's not about label politics. It's about connecting with fans and making music that people will support because they enjoy it (Wiz Khalifa and Taylor Gang?), so let's give Ja some space to breathe and do his thing.
