Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 1/30/2011

Talib Kweli tells the labels "I can do it all by myself" with a successful first week, and Tech N9ne brings DJ Whoo Kid into his chart consistency with the retail version of "Bad Season."

Nicki Minaj neared #1 again, within 2,000 units - before being inched out by singer-songwriters Amos Lee and Iron & Wine. The success of her platinum-selling Pink Friday brought the Queens, New York sensation up six places to #3, in a week that ended with her highly-watched SNL appearance.

Atlantic’s Bruno Mars climbed a spot to #5 with his Doo Wops & Hooligans. Additionally, Mars stepped away from possible jail-time after a cocaine possession arrest last year. To date, Bruno’s debut has sold 595,000 copies and spawned two number one singles—“Grenade” and “Just the Way You Are.”

Speaking of Mars, he, along with B.o.B., Eminem and Cee Lo Green are included in this year's Grammy Nominees release. The Recording Academy's annual preview to the awards show snagged a #4 debut.

Down a spot to #13, Rihanna's Loud album continues to climb towards platinum, with features from Eminem, Drake and Nicki Minaj.

Eminem's Recovery climbed 1 spot to #16. As one of the year's best-selling albums, the Aftermath Entertainment/Interscope Records release reached 3.5 overall domestic units sold. The work features production from Alex da Kid, DJ Khalil, Just Blaze and Mobb Deep's Havoc. This weekend, Eminem's likeness will appear in a Lipton Brisk commercial during Super Bowl XV.

Hey Jason, I remember when Rapper's Delight first was played on WBLS back in 79, do you know who Frankie Crocker is? I was listening to hip hop before you were born, trust me I know the history of hip hop. People want to talk about Em and Jay are sellouts...lol...did you fools even know that Hip Hop was helped started from disco? Rappers used to rap over disco beats back in 79 when the first rap records came out! Not old school, disco beats! So how in the hell are Em and Jay sellouts when hip hop was made with the help of disco??? You kids don't know the history.

that video looks like some book of eli shit. dont tell me you felt that movie kweli. that movie SUCKED dick. the road was so much better and it came out a little before, right around the same time. fuck that lame twist. AND more importantly FUCK SAVING THE KING JAMES BIBLE THROUGH AN APOCALYPSE. THAT WOULD BE ONE OF THINGS THAT WOULD BE CRITICAL TO GET RID OF FOR A HEALTHY HUMANITY. IMAGINE A NEW WORLD WITH A BIBLE RIGHT OFF THE BAT. THAT WOULD SUCK WE WOULD BE RIGHT BACK AT SQUARE ONE. SO FUCK YOU HUGHES BROTHERS AND FUCK YOU DENZEL AND FUCK YOUR BULLSHIT FAKE UPDATED KING JAMES BULLSHIT FAKE BIBLE. THAT SHOULD NEVER BE SAVED. how many people you know buy cd players? its a new era man these album sells mean nothing I mean look as popular as Kanye is today if this was 5 years ago and he was this popular his album would be multi platinum by now

    • Stretch

album sales include itunes and all digital sales not just actual cd's. The real question is how many people buy their music? everyone just dowloads their music off frostwire or torrents.

    • jdank

LISTEN UP! Just because 90% of the world listen to garbage radio music and call themselves hip hop fans DOES NOT make hip-hop dead. So what, half the world listens to garbage music like lil wayne and drake and wiz khalifa. That doesn't mean hip-hop is dead. Obviously it is not nearly as good as 20 years ago, and it has pretty much been taken over by industry. But, there are still real rappers out there and real fans, they're just smaller groups in these times. For sure, the 14,000 people that went out of there way and spent 10 hard bucks for Talib Kweli are REAL HIP HOP FANS. Talib is bringing back the motivating and political lyrics that hip-hop started with. It never was supposed to be about "how gangster you are" and "how cool everything you own is." In conclusion- hip hop is still alive. Just because mainstream garbage is more popular than it doesn't make it dead. Look at Lupe Fiasco, Talib Kweli, GZA, Raekwon, Ghostface, and Slaughterhouse all devoting themselves to their music and making it powerful and keeping it alive. They aren't bringing it back, it never left, it just decreased in size. Hopefully one day in the future real rap will such as Talib Kweli will get a solid 3 million copies sold, rather than Eminem. And I really like Eminem, but this pop album was just embarrassing. Real rap= LASERS!

    • Stretch

yo jason go fuckyourself you fagget. How can you say that. Lil wayne raps like he has a dick in his mouth and his lyrics are garbage. Drake is better but not better then most underground rappers. You obviously dont listen to much rap otherwise you would know that. Cormega, AZ, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Termanology, Joell Ortiz, Joe Buddens, Royce Da 5'9, Crooked I, Aasim thats just some off the top of my head. If you can say those cocksuckers you mentioned are better then them theres something wrong with you

    • jason

Plus, Lil Wayne and Drake are way better than most underground rappers.

    • Jason

Do you have any clue how hip-hop started? Hip-hop started with upbeat party music, not movitating and political lyrics. Learn your hip-hop history, buddy

    • Mrnoluv

Hey I respect your opinion and I'm way too old to know that you can't call someone dumb for what they post on one subject or topic, but what you are saying doesn't make sense. Think about it, if REAL HIP HOP or HIP HOP WAS ALIVE, why aren't people buying it? Because that's what we mean when we say it's dead. No one is supporting 90% of hip hop artists, so it's just basically EM and Kanye, Lil Wayne...and people who you or others who swear HIP HOP is still alive are just cult followers. The fact is, yes you like this lower name, lower selling guys but MOST don't. HIP HOP IS DEAD TO MOST PEOPLE. If it were still alive we would support it. I am old enough to remember the glory days of the 80's, 90's, I supported hip hop, bought an album every week no matter what. From Ultramagnetic to PE...but Em to me is the last great artist, the guys today are just worried about their image, no skill. Hip Hop is dead, you might not think so, young cats may think us older cats are crazy but we have something to compare it to and trust me what Talib Kweli and 90% of the rappers out there today isn't close to what Justice and Kool G did back in the days. That was real hip hop. IF HIP HOP WAS ALIVE AND WELL IT WOULD SELL! You may not agree with that, but that is the truth in anything in life. Don't believe ask someone older than you that you know, trust me you will learn that in life. Hip Hop has fallen off and no one is supporting 90% of it because it's DEAD.

  • white milk

the only reason album sales "dont matter" as many of you say is bc the artists you feel deserve to be there arent. if your favorite artist was there you would be bragging about the shyt. just accept that your fav rapper is not what the masses prefers. it is what it is. and imo 14k i snot a successful album even if it is independent. you still gotta pay ppl.but much respect to talib for stayin true to himself even if the album flopped...lol... hate me now if u like but the truth still remains...

    • mrnoluv

Let me get this straight, you think Em is selling records because he's white??? That is the dumbest thing I think I have ever heard. I can tell you must be young as fuck! Take it from someone in his 30's who works for a living, PEOPLE DON'T BUY YOUR SHIT JUST BECAUSE OF YOUR RACE,ESPECIALLY IN A RECESSION! I know you are young and don't have the problems us grown folks do, but trust me, nobody in this day and time is spending money just because of race. That is just crazy talk right there.

    • white milk

actually no. i havent bought a em album in over 10yrs. i think the only album i have of his is slim shady n maybe encore n im not even sure abt that. i jus believe its the truth. same ppl sayn sales dnt matter was actin like banks was gone sell n when he didnt they was salty abt it but i never thght he wld. 50 is the only 1 in tht group tht has the potential to make a comeback. i say tht bc he still has follwing ie 4mil twitter followers but aside from him no one else in tht group has mass appeal. if you gonna sell u need tht. u can call it selling out or w/e but it is wht it is and the complaints wont change it. on top of that i dnt like talib but i like kendrick lamar so its not that i want dumb down music i jus cant fuk wit talib's sound. music isnt just lyrics. the track n the lyrics make up the beat n if 1 falls short well then hopefully its the lyrics n not the beat bc u can tune out lyrics but u cant tune out a wack beat. thts y most of your fav dnt sell. not the lyrics, they jus need to learn how to pick good beats and no i dont mean 808s. just be diverse wit it n switch up the flow n sound. we in a age where the same old sound has become boring. just my opinion. i know i wrote a lot of shyt...my bad

    • Anonymous

      ^^..and the problem is?

    • Anonymous

u must be a slim shady fan. shady can put out a blank disc and sell 500k yes and its mostly because he is white

  • PabloEscobar

Eminem is probably laughing all the way to the BANK haha.... Damn don't pay any attention to the charts anyways; the only people who should care are herbish board room executives who sell out the culture for a profit. I'm just saying, the billboard charts has now been irrelevant for Hip-Hop/Rap for at least 7 years now.....REAL TALK

  • ADT

I thought Pink Friday moved over 1m units, earning it the platinum certification ??

    • EddieMurrrphy

stores have had 1 million shipped to them. which sells 1 million for the record company, regardless if people bought them all yet. happens all the time that gold certification for teflon don came while it was still around the 480,000 mark.

Hip Hop is dead..Nas called that shit...only 5 rappers have gone gold or platinum in the last 10 years...think about it...and please believe...back pack rap is dead..New York is dead..Cali is dead...and down south only deal with mixtapes...i rest my case

    • mrnoluv

We all know Hip Hop is dead, been dead it died when Em took that long ass break.

    • EssentialMC

Actually Andre 3000 said hip hop was dead 1st on "funkin around" I co sign everthing else you said though.

    • hi

purp & patron did something tho

    • abrah

huh? Where did you get that statistic. I can think of at least ten rappers off the top of my head who have gone gold/plat in the last few years (lil' wayne, T.I, Eminem, Jay-Z, Kanye West, NAS, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Kid Cudi, Diddy) Not saying they are all good, but they do sell.

  • high

damn niggas is still buyin dat em shit killed da charts 4 hip hop

  • Almar

I Downloaded Gutter Rainbows But i havent got a chance to listen to it yet, 14k for an independent album is impressive, especially when you never hear Kwelis music on the radio, His Last album debuted at #1 on the billboard pop chart, so if this was a major label release with his usual production by Hi-Tek and Kanye West, It would have easily sold 60k, No Fuckin Joke.

    • BWS-Fish

it would have sold more if u handt downloaded it u dumb ass.

    • HipHop

Co-Sign. It's a great success for Talib Kweli to sell 14.000. Congratulations on that, Talib is someone who earned it. Everyone who suppurts real hip hop should buy that album. It's well worth the few bucks.

Talib Kweli killed it on this one, if you haven't bought Gutter Rainbows I recommend you do, top quality production and lyrics. One of the best works in the past 3 years. REAL HIP HOP!

  • jack johnson

why are Bruno Mars, Rihanna and a Grammy Awards Compilation on a "hip hop album sales" list? are hip hop sales so bad that you have to put R&B singers on there just to hide the fact Talib Kweli's was the only new hip hop/rap album to make the top 30 in sales, and even then it only barely did

  • Anonymous

Talib kweli's getting there thats it son independents are the way to go.

how in the fuck is 14k sold first week successful? Especially when it's an emcee who's been around for over a decade and been consistent with releases?

    • Christopher English

I stated it before but for the retarts who just "dont' get it" You guys don't really think do you? He sold 14,000 without a label. Out of the $9 on itunes... he makes $7 per copy sold. So he just made $98,000. How is that a loss? You need to stop thinking in terms of major label shit because artists don't see a lot of that money. They see it from shows. Step up your thinking fam!!!

    • Anonymous

      so true so true

    • EddieMurrrphy

and he gets like 10 bucks an album. that is a success the fuck you talkin' about, indie releases never do great on the charts. cause all their cock holding fans download, and the majority of people dont know them so they get not nearly as many white girl buys or sympathy buys. i was expecting like 5k for this so.... hell yeah its a fuckin success

    • Jahbari Townsend

It's successful because it just is! No radio airplay, no video airplay, no tour, just straight music and loyal fans. I'm going to send out a letter to all of these sites who put so much emphasis on 1st week sales because that's bullshit.

  • c red

@ my man below no need to wait for that yelawolf album he has the hottest album on the streets right now with that trunk music 0-60 go pick that up it should do you till radioactive drop tm never seems to get old

@ Realness 121 True story, Drake's Room For Improvement was str8 hip hop and way better than that Thank me later 'Pop-Hop' bullshit. Hopefully Drake will do a 180 and get back to his roots. Anyone looking for beats check out SparkzMusic (dot) com

    • Realness121

I Bet you Drake would have hung with Rakim,KRS-1,and Nas better than Kanye Can,simply cause Drake is a true lyricist, listen to Room For Improvement, where he showcases his Raw Lyricism Potential

    • Lol

Because Kayne West is bringing hip-hop back? Lol, seriously? When the 90's trend is starting again, then I'll say hip-hop is coming back. Kanye ain't worth nothing. Listen to his verse on the track Classic, with Nas, Rakim and KRS-1. He ain't worth shit, he got murdered, humiliated, embarrased.

  • Am gooone! Am on my way!

I bet the Grammy committee all pitched in together and bought those 38,000 copies.
