The Roots?...

First off, did you say Michael Jackson is only known for one album?! That is single handedly the most ignorant statement in your attempt to be knowledgable about music. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure he's remembered for the string of hits that his catalog is comprised of that spans four decades and not just the "Thriller" album. Secondly, to piggy-back off of what Anonymous was alluding to, the Wu Tang Clan, by far had more of an impact on hip hop as a group than the Fugees ever did. You want to talk about influence. The Wu Tang sound changed the soundscape of hip hop, from production to the way emcees rhymed. Hell, there's production on "The Score" that's evidently influenced by the soundscape that Robert "Prince Rakeem/Rza" Diggs was providing hip hop at the time. Kid, was easily one of the top three most influential hip hop producers of the 1990's. I could go on for days about that but I'm not in the mode. The Wu also did something that no other group had ever done by allowing each member to pursue solo careers while still being members of the group. This, in turn, allowed the group to showcase the individual talents of every member in effort to maximaze the Wu Tang brand by turning each one into a star of their own. Why is that important? Because that's exactly the formula one Percy "Master P" Miller followed in creating the geographic shifting of hip hop to 'Down South' movement known as No Limit Records. You know, the record label that was the cataclysm for a new generation of rap fans to look "down south" to New Orleans in the late 90s for their brand of hip hop. Why is that important? Because that exactly what one New Orleans native Brian "Baby" Williams and brother ?? "Slim" Williams did after forming their supergroup, the "Hot Boys". And we all know what has "weezed" it's way from that grouping. Yeah, that's Wu Tang influence...and that's not even half of the battle. You wanna know how else the Wu impacted hip hop?! Ask Erykah Badu. Ask Andre "3000" Benjamin. Ask Reggie "Redman" Noble. Ask Lupe Fiasco. Ask Nasir "Nas" Jones about Wu. Ask Marshall "Eminem" Mathers about Wu. Ask Nappy Roots about Wu. Ask O'shea "Ice Cube" Jackson about Wu. Man, screw music. Ask director F. Gary Gray about Wu. Ask director director Jim Jarmusch about Wu. Ask director Quentin Tarrentino about Wu. Hell, even go ask all the kids that made up the hip hop generation during the 90's in the countries of China and Japan about Wu. And not just those two countries either. Austria, France, Nigeria, Brazil, Haiti!!! (That's Wyclef territoryWu Tang legacy in HUGE!!! Then ask them all about the Fugees. While "The Score" did open the world to the wonderful talents of Miss Lauren Hill and Wyclef Jean (Pras not as much), it did not produce a group as impactful to hip hop as Wu. It's not even close.

Not knocking The Fugees or anything, as they are a great group and yes, they are highly influential, but you are making them sound like the God particle of all hip-hop. Far from it. Yes, they have (directly and indirectly) influenced some (if not lots, though not all) of those artists, styles and movements you mentioned, but they are not the single influence, nor the most prominent influence. OutKast's first album came out the same year as The Fugees first album (1994), and at the time OutKast was a lot bigger. And their second albums "The Score" and "ATLiens" came out the same year as well (1996). Add in the fact that Dungeon Family had been producing even before that, I don't see how you can say that "from them came the Dungeon Family, [and] Outkast". True, The Fugees blew up before OutKast, getting huge with "The Score", while OutKast didn't reach the same commercial heights until 2000's "Stankonia". But "ATLiens" (which came out the same year as "The Score") is the only OutKast album you can really compare to The Fugees stylistically, as "Aquemini" and "Stankonia" sound nothing like either Fugees albums. And even then "ATLiens" is way different. You are right, however, in saying that "and from them (Outkast) [came] Kanye and the current bohemian movement of Lupe, Cudi, Wale, Drake and skinny jeans." Kid Cudi, Kanye West, Wale, Tyga, Lil Wayne, and B.o.B. are clearly rooted in the style created by OutKast. They have similarities to The Fugees, and probably are influenced by them as well, but no more so than they have similarities to and are influenced by A Tribe Called Quest or Wu-Tang. Lil Wayne's flow, at least originally, was at its foundation a mimicry of Andre 3000's (with parts of Method Man and Jay-Z thrown in to make it sound more original), B.o.B. is quite clearly stealing 2000-era OutKast's style, both of Kid Cudi's albums are rooted in the atmospherics of OutKast's "ATLiens" (with his second album also blatantly borrowing genre elements of "Aquemini"), and Lil Wayne, Drake and T.I. have all verbally expressed the influence OutKast has had on them. Lupe is the only person I'll give you as being more influenced by The Fugees than he is by OutKast (possibly), though even then, he is quite clearly even more influenced by Common and A Tribe Called Quest. Not to mention that OutKast, with Dungeon Family, created the sound of the South, which has now become the defining sound of Mainstream hip-hop. If any group is the "single most important and influential Hip-hop group in recent history" it is clearly OutKast. Reggaeton and neo soul existed long before The Fugees were even thought up, and Lauryn Hill was probably bumping neo soul tracks in her teens. And I'll give you hip-hop soul, but you can't possibly call them the main creators or progenitors. Does the name Mary J. Blige not ring a bell? Will-I-Am? The two look similar but there sounds are far different. Damien Marley? He was influenced by his father, and by classic Dancehall, a sound that The Fugees are influenced by and which no sane person could call them one of the creators of. Alicia Keys, India Arie, Jasmine Sullivan, Amy Winehouse, Joss Stone? I could actually buy these, and some of them have specifically mentioned Lauryn Hill, though you make it sound like Lauryn Hill was the only influence. They take cues from many other artists, some more prominently than they do Lauryn Hill. And Corinne Bailey Rae? What do you squash every black singer together? Their sounds are far apart.

It's like you have no context for your statements at all. You have no history behind your understanding; no research or cultural reverence. Everything is just numbers and chart statistics -- you have no soul. Goddamnit, the modern-day manifestation of blues music, and its listners have no soul. Imagine that. The Fugees are, and will remain, the sinlge most influential and important Hip hop band in recent history. Aside from them are perhaps the Cold Crush and Grand Master and the Furious Five. Maybe Outkast. From them came the Dungeon Family, Outkast, and from them Kanye and the current bohemian movement of Lupe, Cudi, Wale, Drake and skinny jeans. From them come Neo-Soul, Hip Hop soul, reggaeton. From Lauryn Hill we got Alicia Keys, India Arie, Jasmin Sullivan; from Wyclef we got (in part) Damian Marley, Will I Am; and from Pras we got a very good documentary on the homeless that few people know about, but in actuality should. The Fugees single-handedly changed hip hop irrevocably. And because of "Hip hop fans"....they will be forgotten. It wont' be until probably 50 years later -- like with the blues -- some white guy will be going through his father's CD collection and come across "Blunted on Reality" that they will finally get the resepect they deserve. Because that man will probably be a rock fan. And like I said early, when compared to rock/blues/jazz fans, hip hop fans are just...stupid.
