Lloyd Banks Talks Going Gold From Home

The PLK explains how he crafted a gold-selling single on a budget and why he thinks G-Unit had the most impact of any group within the last decade.

With the advent of programs such as Apple Logic, Garage Band and Avid Pro Tools, artists such as GZA and Erykah Badu have talked candidly about the advantages of recording at their in-home studios. In exchange for filtering out the subpar emcees who keep trying to peddle their wares in the comment sections of HipHopDX and other sites, most major labels will gladly add the fee for recording in a top-notch studio to an artist’s advance. But, given the current sales climate, G-Unit’s Lloyd Banks sees a happy medium between both methods.

“They massage the artist to feel like the bigger the studio, the bigger the record,” Banks told BBC 1 Xtra’s Tim Westwood. “And that’s definitely not the case.”

Westwood went on to recount a time when then Def Jam CEO Lyor Cohen ordered a pair of high-end studio speakers and billed them to DMX’s recording session. Banks added that he dramatically cut the recording costs of HMF2 (The Hunger For More 2) by doing his initial work from his home studio. After recording the initial vocal tracks, Banks said he then takes the rough edits to a larger studio for mixing and mastering. The result was the gold-selling single “Beamer, Benz or Bentley” and a top 25 debut in the Hip Hop/R&B category for his album.

The return to the charts got the self-proclaimed Punch Line King praise from critics, including a nod for DX’s “Comeback of the Year.” But to hear Banks tell it, the preceived decline of G-Unit is part of Hip Hop’s natural evolutionary cycle.

“You can’t name one entity that has the same energy,” Banks explained. “From Ruff Ryders, Bad Boy, Cash Money, No Limit…they all had their moments. Honestly I can’t say we’ve seen an impact like G-Unit has had in the last decade. People wore bulletproof vests after we came. We touched people.”

What about Outkast i think they had a bigger influence than G-unit. He's just talking shit he keeps talking about how well beamer benz or bently sold but he won't talk about the flop called HFM 2. If you are so obsessed with sales why don't you talk about it when you sell almost nothing.

  • Sev

Lloyd banks is one of my fav rappers i hope he continues to put out that fire.

I was expecting like 100-150k B.I.S.D (2 dvds) FLOPPED!! "SMH2" Oops, I meant "HFM2" (15 features!!) Went Double Copper!!!! & Yogi is Next!!!! Do you remember when 50 told Styles over the radio that you aint shit because you can't sale 1 million records?? I wonder how 50 feels about that statement now???? "SMH2" Oops, I meant "HFM2" (15 features!!) Went Double Copper!!!! The saddest part is there are way more that 40k people on thisis50 and fifs twitter.... Does EVERYBODY see how the G-Unit stans don't care about album sales anymore? I wonder why??? 50 would put out a youtube video dissing an artist's low album sales. G-UNIT STANS BE LOVING THAT SHIT!!! LAUGHING AND CARING ON, saying shit like "50 ROCKS & HE'S A COMEDIAN".... SO what "THA FUCK" happened or what changed all of a sudden???(Lames) haaa lol Do you remember when 50 told Styles P over the radio that he aint shit because you can't sale 1 million records?? Lloyd Banks flopped. You know it, I know it, he knows it and Game knows it. SMFH. Say whatever the h*ll y'all want about him being up on EMI/G-Unit and how 40K independently is really like selling 200K on a major. STOP IT. That's 100 percent bullsh*t and just a lame a** excuse. If y'all really believe that, then explain these 2010 first-week sales: Now let me point something out that y'all didn't realize doggies. F*ck the placement, I'll let Banks slide with debuting at No. 26 b/c that sh*t is horribly embarassing, I mean, FAT JOE type-a** bad, but let's look at what really f*cks me up with Banks' new CD. He's got Kanye West, Swizz Beatz, Fabolous, 5-0 Cent, Pusha T, Raekwon, Juelz Santana, Eminem, Ryan Leslie, Pusha T, Jeremih, Akon, Lloyd and some other cats. WTF?!?! You can't have that many good artists on your record and not sell at least 60K, just look at Nelly's punk a** 5.0.

    • iAMtheWESTcoast

game sold 1 million in the u.s. with the dr's advocate, went gold with l.a.x. how is that flopping???

    • Irvin Findlay

game flopped too he was better with g unit he aint even put out r.e.d. and lloyd banks is independent now of course he not gonna sell much dumass if he stayed with interscope like he shouldve he would of done better

  • BWS-Fish

wrong banks, just wrong. G-unit hav had little or no impact. 50 cent, and only 50 cent, had an impact, but it was in 2003 and then he fizzled out which is why no one buys his shit anymore. If u really think that a group containing Tony Gayo has had a significant influence on hip hop, u must be on crack.

Why do people state the Facts with no evidence. Dude, Notorious Biggie Smalls, "Who shot'cha" in '92. There is an infamous picture of Biggie and Tupac both wearing bulletproof vest in 91. Wu tang '92. Reakwon's Cubin Linx. Mobb Deep 91's first album. Plus the GOAT NAS WAS ALREADY 3 ALBUMS IN BEFORE '96, which was the day bue of JAY AND DMX. Man, you're bugging DMX WAS EVEN ROCKING BULLETPROOFS BEFORE THE SUIT WEARING JAY-Z's first album. Dude was kitty kat his first album no bulletproof vest. Wu and Mobb had everybody shook at the concerts - that was the NY THING IN THE '90s and jay didn't get in until 96 - so what lame ass facts are getting garbage brah?

  • C. Wesley

Actually Jay-z started the whole wearing bulletproof vests as a stat quo...check the Where I'm From video....(just the facts people)

  • LOL LMAO

Lloyd Banks talks about all the record labels going down. Well what goes up, must come down. It's called the law of impermanence. You see it everywhere in sports, movie actors, music artists, and life.

Stop the Young Money dick sucking. Before you FANBOYS make your "SKINNY JEAN" comments think about it, Cash Money, and Young Money is two different things. If that is the case, Rocafella/Roc Nation should be in the running; but it shouldn't because they are two different things. Even though Jay-z has sold numerous albums for the "ROC" it would not go under Roc-Nations track record because they are seperate. YoungMoneyCashMoney is just the name/people started the record labels.Slim and Birdman started CASH MONEY MILLIONAIRES. Lil Wayne started YOUNG MONEY. Its kinda like Shady Aftermath...EM pays Dre royalties and for distributing and etc but its to different things.Ex.Aftermath/Interscope; EM was able to carry D12 which was a group within itself under SHADY AFTER MATH. Because their are still AFFILIATES does not mean its the samething. Im starting to think you niggas probably don't know what a DECADE is.

Bigger impact then No Limit? No Limit sold 75.000.000 albums.

    • dmize-one

cash money was bigger than g unit too... but he said the last decade... no limit and cash money were poppin off in the late 90s.. reading comprehension anyone??

  • Ed0n

Young Money is for kids who apperantly seem to be under the age of 15. I hate that high-pitched snare, it's on every fucking track. ( for example Not Afraid's snare, that kind of a snare. ) Lol, what happened to the regular snare? What happened to the bass? I hate that snare and I fucking hate those stupid piano beats that Lil' Gayne promotes. That guy made a rock album and you're tellin' me that I'm supposed to take it as it was Hiphop?! LOL Everybody knows Lil' Wayne is fake. He can't rap and his metaphores are corny as fuck. Lol, fucking mainstream pop singers. To me Young Money is more like a record label full of Britney Spears copies. And don't tell me that Drake or Nicki Minaj are dope 'cause they ain't. Okay? Drake looks ugly as fuck, lol matter of fact he looks like a donkey from Pakistan. Nicki Minaj is a cracked whore, she noticed that she can't sing, so she tried to rap. LOL what happened? Another Missy Elliott lame ass copy. What I'm tellin' you is that you HAVE to LOOK at Young Money's fanbase. LOL THOSE MOTHERFUCKERS ARE SOME WHITE UPPER-CLASS KIDS WHO WEAR XXL JEANS, BASEBALL CAPS, 300$ NIKE SHOES AND ACTUALLY PRACTISE HOW TO TALK LIKE A BLACK PERSON. LOL, THEM MOTHERFUCKERS ARE ABOUT 9-16 YEARS OLD. THEY AIN'T 20. If you're over 21 years old and you like Young Money then you probably have never heard of HipHop. Let me make this more simple to you idiots: Wayne, Drake, Birdman, Rick Ross, Gucci Mane, Kanye West, Puff Daddy and Soulja Boy AIN'T HipHop. They simply ain't. '' Why? I like their beats and I like to hear people rapping about how much money they got. I like to listen to a small ass crackhead with his 8 years old voice. '' If you recognized yourself of that then you, my friend, are fucked. I'm not saying that you should look for HipHop of 80's or 90's. Lol. That's not the point. The point is that HipHop is a lifestyle and I don't fucking want some bitch ass motherfuckers to ruin that shit. I don't want to see rich people acting ghetto and shit. I don't want to see HipHop getting fucked. Did you know that a 13 years old white upper-class cracker who likes Young Money would give anything to live in a ghetto with a pistol in his pocket? He actually thinks living in a box is cool. He actually THINKS selling crack and beating somebody's ass is cool. Lol. I'm done. Fuck you and motherfuck Young Money's girls.

    • Atl2Trill

@Ed0n Nigga you sound like a bitter old nigga. lol!!! If you don't like it, then don't listen to it or buy it.

    • lit

@Ed0n Hip-hop IS a lifestyle. It's the stuff you see on the streets and encompasses a lot more than just rapping/producing. The hip-hop you see on the news, on the charts, the music you hear on the radio is a business. Whether you like it or not hip-hop has been commercialised since it first started getting consistent chart-topping albums/singles; a businesses sole-purpose is to provide a return for its shareholders, ergo record execs and artists will cater to the most profitable market to bring the most profit to their shareholders. And the most profitable market is the 'rich wigga' market like you mentioned. But you seem to want hip-hop to stay in the ghetto, where it originated. That's a shitty attitude and will advance NOTHING in the world, or on a smaller community scale (eg. the very ghettos where it originated)

    • Epic Fail Comment

Rants like the comment above me is the reason why hip hop is dying. This shit is getting old. 1st off, Not Afraid was by Eminem not some Young Money rapper. I bet the only Young Money rapper you even know is Lil Wayne, Drake and Nicki Minaj. I don't like them but they can make decent songs time to time. If you listen to Jedi Mind Tricks, Diabolic, Immortal Technique or some bullshit political faux rapper who works for the illuminati, then get laid for once. Go have fun at your cockfest Jedi Mind Tricks concert. Kanye is not real hip hop? Then why does that dude get approval from almost every hip hop artist in the world. Open your fucking mind bitch

  • 9Stories

The truth is, we all loved G-Unit at one point or another. I can say that I did, even though I dont pay attention to mainstream hip hop anymore cause everything is just a stream of garbage. Really now, who the fuck is Gucci Mane?

yea g-unit is crazy big. bigger than anyother rap group ever worldwide, its simply the truth. haterz do ya research kbye

I am not a fan but I must admit, Llyod banks is his own phantom at the opera. Meaning, dude can literally hold his own, lyrically. Nonetheless, the brash gritted queens native arrogance excedes itself around his peers. Hints, his track listing, banks had every crrent rap star on his album with the exception of M, Jay and Nas. The album could have gone much further if banks was more genuine in his intimate subjects in his substance matter, in retrospect to him trying too hard to push his alter egos on the public. Maybe he'll grow or not, time will tell if he can ride stand alone. Now to answer his question - sorry, banks but once again your arrogance blinds you. On the East cost it was Nas, Mobb Deep, Biggie Smalls first video "who shot'cha" to Wu tang - they all wore bullet proof vest a decade before G-Unit. Remember Nas's "Hate Me Now" video? Yeah...? And on the West Coast, Can somebody say Tupac, Dogg Pound when Snoop was gangsta, to any of the crips and bloods. G-Unit didn't come close to reinventing the wheel - they just add more pop to the culture.

its funny to see you guys argue about sells..... if its underground cats you say shit like..sells dont' mean nothing. but now i guess it does... G Unit didn't have that many nice albums...face it. and why does wu tang keep popppin up. were not talkin bout the 90's. If we were then you'd have to give it up to Bone thugs who sold more records worldwide then all these cats and had niggas biting they style. you know how every rapper nowadays sings on hooks and throws in harmonies...where u think they learned that from.

  • Rick Ross the Bawse

This nigga just needs to shut the fuck up. His album flopped, the unit was never relevant except for 50 and maybe Game and they time is over. The Bawse destroyed these niggas careers. And even games album went 5 Mil. HFM Went 5 Mil. So they have definetely sold over 35 million records. With 5 Artists ....... its not like they one called the other one to group like Lil Wayne did with Drake. They started off in the hood as a group and made it out the hood as a group. • DrewDown91

G-unit made a huge impact, no doubt. BUT NOT FOR THE WHOLE DECADE. Banks is trippin. Their mixtapes changed the game in-and-of themselves. The way they marketed them, jackin beats, the whole shit. "50 Cent is the Future," "God's Plan," "No Mercy, No Fear," these were classic, and although attributed to 50 Cent, were really G-Unit's first releases. That said, by 2006 this shit was a wrap. WU-TANG is the truth. They made a bigger impact in the 90s that is still lasting today. They had LPs that came out after the initial solo releases such as, Supreme Clientele, Bobby Digital in Stereo, and Fishscale, just to name a few, LONG AFTER THE INITIAL WU Tang buzz was over. Also, they had two albums that were the shit. G-UNIT HAD ONE, if that. I like banks, but G-Unit did have a decade worth of impact plain and simple. WU-TANG FOREVER. Suuuuuuuuuuuuu! No Limit had a huge impact in the late 90's after B.I.G. and PAC died like most of the entire industry! before that it was Bad Boy, Death Row, and DEF Jam!! No Limit killed the late 90's, Ruff Ryders took it from about 99-2002, Cash Money came up after people stopped fuckin wit No Limit,Roc-a-Fella was running shit, but G-Unit came and took over the game, EVERY artist came out and wet Multi-Plat minus Yayo who still went gold, what other label/group has done that? Jay, Kanye and Cam only people on the Roc to go plat, Lil Wayne Just started going plat, X and Eve only people on Ruff Ryders going plat? So what are yall talking bout?

Aftermath...there isn't a single record released under that album that didn't go at least gold...and I think that's only one...All the others? Multi-Platinum

G-Unit doesn't own 85% royalties like Cash money and No Limit did. G-UNIT NEVER HAD THAT AND NEVER WILL. So you don't have that major record deal and record labels aren't going to give you that nowadays.,,,,

Wayne just started going platinum???Homie His debut in 99 went Platinim. In fact, All of his albums went Platinum PLUS except 500 degrees which went Gold. Boy I tell ya, I don't comment on these things cause I get a laugh at the things people post and don't do their homework. The only label that's STILL doing numbers in todays climate is CASH MONEY!!! Facts are Fact. Platinum Then(1998), Platinum Now(2010,2011). Women Lie, Men Lie, Numbers Don't!!!! Take your personal feelings out the equation please.

Yeah thats why everybody is now doing their own recording from home on a laptop. Thats smart you can really take your time and make it right. No rushing like when you are in a real studio having to create on the fly because someone has rented out after you. Now you can get more done because you can be comfortable in making real music. Take some of that budget money and build you a studio. Then save more doe by paying that hungry unknown cat around the way instead, of some of those overrated producers.
