Dr. Dre Speaks On Favorite Newcomer, Veteran In Hip Hop

Dr. Dre raves about his favorite new artist, as well as a former collaborator.

Dr. Dre will be on the cover of the upcoming issue of XXL Magazine - understandably so, given the excitement over the good doctor's first single in years, "Kush."

Among the topics discussed in the issue was Dre's favorite "new" artist in Hip Hop: "Just recentley, actually, I’ve heard some really good artists. I’m a fan of J. Cole. I like Don Trip. Those two I was actually in this studio working with recently, and I really like their vibe. Especially J. Cole. I think that kid has a serious future ahead of him. He’s articulate. The way he speaks is – he’s got it. All he needs is the record now."

Additionally, Dre discussed his favorite veteran in Hip Hop. Electing Jay-Z over some of his proteges in Eminem, Snoop Dogg and 50 Cent, Dre sung Hova's praises. "Oh yeah. I mean Jay is my favorite. I’m a huge Jay -Z fan. I love it. I’m waiting for his record right now. Hopefully, I’ll get a track on it. We’ll see.  Yeah I love it. Because it helps keep alive the type of music that I love to do."

Ok, the thing that pisses me off about Dr. dre is, Detox should of BEEN OUT YEARS AGO!!!! I mean, c'mon man, u r DR. DRE......u talkin' 'bout the record has to be 'perfect" for it to drop. Nigga been making music since the World Class Wreckin' Cru days.....Dre KNOWS how to make records....but to make his fans wait for YEARS is BULLSHIT!!! And after all these years, what do the fans get? This weak ass "Kush" shit. Detox is a myth.....like Big Foot......no one knows where it is or when it will surface.....like Osama Bin Laden!!!! look at how much rap has changed since 2001. dre's sound could of ruled the decade. Even Eminem had to get with the new production to stay relevant. Fuck Detox! When it drops, I'm copping from the bootlegger.

Cmon man Jay-Z fuck that shit I'm starting to question Dre's thought process.

  • Its Um

surprise he didn't say Nas but I guess since he worked with him more than Jay-Z and plus Jay-Z is a bussiness man and Nas is still doing his Emcee/one mic thing. And I agree with the guy below that Hitman could have been great if things would have went right for him.

  • Doubl Negative

Dude on 2001, Hittman had potential to join the ranks of hip-hop's elite, label politics and Eminen got in his way. Hip-hops greatest lost.

Yo, I'm wit dis, for reelz. Dre's output as of late has been Jacob The Jeweler-level flawless: The booze, the headphones, the tv commercial for soda, the affordable life insurance policies for Black men over 25, the 2008 calendars where a year is 4353545 days (so that his record can still be said to come out "on schedule"). All of it. I eagerly look forward to the inevitable announcements that the album has been delayed yet again so that he can "fix" a track to meet the internet's expectations. THAT'S HIP HOP!!!

    Shout Out from 336

the one thing that makes this album wack is the fact that dre went out of his formula..both chronics had a majority of unheard of artists..now he brings out this shit with mainstream cats..dre your signature is yo trade..still got love for you but gettin cats like jigga and j.cole on detox...shit aint gangster no more..i understand that nate has ill health but akon nigga...get tha fuck outta here...rather spend my dough on jay electronica and some joell ortiz biatch

    • Ddot DOuble

Truth...you said it all homie...dude does not seem to be comin' correct. I'll still give the album a shot though, even though the first single is trash.

  • Gucci Mane Represents Hip Hop

Yo niggaz are wack. Dr Dre can't even write his own lyrics. Eazy-E murked his ass. Eazy-E was the only real OG. Fuck Ice Cube, he been doing kids movies. Jay-Z and J. Cole suck too. They rap about money and bitches, nothing original. Listen to real hip hop like Gucci Mane the best rapper alive and OJ Da Juiceman the future of Hip Hop. His XXL Freestyle was amazing. OJ kills J. Cole's weak verse.

    • C

Listen to real hip hop like Gucci Mane the best rapper alive and OJ Da Juiceman the future of Hip Hop. Shut the Hell up Gucci Mane is def. one of the worst rappers of all time and OJ is not lyrical at all

tha muthafucken WEST IS BACK!! AFTERMATH/BWS STOP HATIN'

    • @soucar843 on twitter

OK it s time for a lttle honesty, not hate but honesty. The majority of of people that fuck with west coast people are west coast people. the west isn't coming back any time soon sorry. J.Cole, B.O.B, Big KRIT, Yelawolf, CyHi Da Prince, Jay Electronica are the future of this genre. All these artist just so happened to be from the south and are lyricist, until the west coast can put out something that can compete with the aforementioned artist the west will not become a player come back. Just like when the NY folks keep saying that "New York" is back with every other artist that manage to get a short burst of energy, due to the fact that they may have had a very catchy hook. I'm sorry all i meant to say is that the west isn't going/coming no fuggin where/

No real fan of hip-hop would ever say jay-Z can't rap. The man is one of the best to ever put it down. Period.

@Ddot double Kingdom Come was bad but to say 75%of his shit since KC is garbage? You must not have listened to ANY of the American Gangster album.

    • Ddot DOuble

Jay can put it down, yes. But he is nowhere near the best to ever do it. Real emcee's don't retire nigga. If you really love the shit, there's no stoppin'. Plus he's made 75% garbage since said retirement *see "Kingdom Come"...terrible record.

Good to see Dr.Dre finally put out an official single. Let's see how the Detox album is put together.

  • Paradox

J Cole and Dr Dre working together?? Mainstream hip hop is finally getting back in position!

  • fenly

I thought Dre wanted to do a collabo with Jay, that would be great if he would stop fucking about and get more involved with the artist side of this music shit His name is heralded so many times as the greatest, and is able to sell singles like cup cakes, so why not make it happen by working with the many veterans aswell as Jay like g rap, raekwon, Nas, AZ

    • wilson

yea Killa_Kaoz you don't really know what your saying. Dre and nas have worked together a lot. The Firm was the first group to sign with aftermath. They also worked together on 'It was written', and 'hip hop is dead'. "Way before The Firm, like back in the day, Nas was the first New York nigga rappin' with Dre. So of course I got a track to bring it back to your face The one kid that would've been Aftermath that got away" Nas - Hustlers

    • Anonymous

pff you kno shit about hip hop, check it was written, "nas is coming" is a dre production, this was the first time a ny rapper worked with dr. dre, and "hustlers" which was on hip hop is dead was a dre beat too

    • hip hop historian

Killa_Kaoz don't be so quick to call people idiot. Dre has in fact worked with Nas on a few tracks for The Firm album. Know your history before you speak

    • Killa_Kaoz

he didnt work with Nas u idiot...that was just a remix someone did on youtube with verse from the watcher 2 on hiphop is dead instrumental!!

    • Anonymous

he did work with jay-z (4 tracks on kingdome come, the watcher 2 on bp 2, plus hov wrote still d.r.e.), he has also collaborated with nas (it was written, hip hop is dead, the firm (with az, foxy brown & nature)), and rae on ob4cl 2 as well

  • Alteez

Why the fuck doesn't Dr. Dre mention Mr. Porter, like ever?

  • Truth B Told

Yall Dudes that be on this site wit ya insignificant and stupid comments need to find yall selves something betta to do with ya time, then finding any reason to hate on Jay. The article aint sayin Jay is the best out, its saying he's the best vet, in Dre's Opinion. KEY WORD being VET. Aint too many vets ,still relevant, PAc gone, Big Gone, Pun gone. I mean u got Snoop still here, but where's Rakim and Kool G Rap, they aint quote on quote hot rite now. Where's LL, doing tv. I mean if u talkin vets, there's Wu Tang, KRS 1, Buckshot, Run DMC (minus JMJ), Cypress Hill, Snoop Dogg, Outkast, Goodie Mob, Nas, Redman, AZ, No Limit maybe, 8Ball & MJG, Bun B, Scarface and a few other cats Im sure I forgot. But, no disrespect to any of them but which 1 of them is really making an impact the way Jay-Z is right now. I mean 4real, where's the argument. Jay Z being the most relevant old/veteran rapper is fact not opinion my dudes. Put on ya THINKIN CAPS.

    • jpepsi

@Anonymous You mean what hip hop really is or what hip hop was ''before'' because Jay gave you a single so you can understand whats going on right now! I think you need to go on youtube and type ''On to the next one''...

    • Anonymous

that depends on YOUR definition of relevent coz KRS is more relevent right now to hip hop than Jay Z is Jigga is only relevent to mainstream radio/MTV kids who don't know WTF hip hop really is

    • Josh

Nas distant relatives, more relevant than any jay shit, reasonable doubt his only great album. Jay gne make us wait for j coles album trus, but thank god he ent on the aftermath

  • mandddyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

yeah! finally, there isn't anotha dickrida of flake and lil gayne. nice pick on j cole and jay-z! they r da truth. who da fuck iz don trip? hopefully, he signz wit roc nation in da future so he can get sum time in da spotlite.

  • BwS

finally!!! ive been waiting for someone to recognize don trip he is the truth!!!!!!!!!!

  • Renzo rolling

What the hell does he like bout Jay Z? Jay Z's not a real artist. He's a rapping hustler. Only in it for the money and the fame. Just like 50 Cent and P.Diddy.

  • nice

so glad he didnt say drake, cole is the future

  • Baller16

wow, i thought he was going to choose Eminem but i guess not haha

    • SixStar General

He's not going to be biased like that. Him choosing Em would be like him choosing himself. That's like how Boi-1da was trying to put Drake higher on the list for best rapper of the 21st century even though he produced almost the whole debut album. Dre wouldn't choose his protege's because that would just make everyone say some shit. He's spent a lot of time around Em' and i'm sure he has more respect and love for that guy then anyone else in this industry.

  • LILDICKDOG

Ya'll need to shut your butts!! I'm gonna suck your dicks! I mean kick your asses... Maybe Jay isn't all that great but my homies respect his dik suggin lipz..... Now move on hataz.....

  • bwsbaby

fuck Jay Z!!! 2Pac was and still is the greatest!

  • SixStar General

How did this even become about Jay anyway? What this should be about is J. Cole. That is someone worth commenting over. Dude has so much talent.

  • Anonymous

Hate on Jay-z finish up, Then name another rapper with 10 solo albums. I'll wait...........

    • Doc

LLs catalogue bodies Jays Jigga hasn't got even remotely close to the level of versatility in his catalogue to fuck wit LL and he's drop classics since Mr Smith not too mention he actually created new rap styles Jay jus bit his off Jaz O and there's plenty others with 10 plus worth mentioning Pac Ghostface Killah Nas Ice Cube Canibus

    • The MG

@ 1st Anonymous: Nah, don't start that. You asked us to name another rapper who had 10 solo albums, not name another rapper who had 10 solo albums and I'll compare his body of work to Jay's. I hate it when people do that. You asked us to name one, we named eight (minus PE, didn't catch that), so that's end of discussion.

    • Anonymous

Krs1 and Scarface are the only the only ones mentioned that have a body of work comparable to Jay-z's. Bizzy, z-ro, Brotha lynch, pastor troy all have more horrible albums then good. Too Short is the shit but Him and snoop haven't had a decent album in years and years. LL is legend but a joke at the same time. Last good album was Mr. Smith. so you got krs1, Scarface, and Jay-z with 10 plus.

    • The MG

To 1st Anonymous, People who have 10+ solo albums other than Jay: KRS-One Too Short Public Enemy Pastor Troy Bizzy Bone Snoop Dogg ...and the three that 2nd Anonymous brought up.

    • Anonymous

@ 1st Anonymous i'm thinking you meant 10 number one solos, that would be a better point to bring up. if you really meant quantity, that's not a good arguement cuz the tru og is too short

    • Anonymous

      Z-RO, SCARFACE, BRUTHA LYNCH

    • Doc

his albums aren't really solo albums there always filled with features of whoever the hot name of the moment is to boost sales come back when Jay can go platinum 5 albums in a row with ZERO features like LL Cool J did n LL went platinum with 11 albums in a row too but the fact mos of his albums didn't rely on features says alot n Jay is yet to make an album without features original BP was as close as he's come

    • dflkdshfkldhdklsfg

I agree with Six Star General. To be honest, I only really like Reasonable Doubt, thats probably Jay-Z' best work to date

    • Burnin

go see him take the stage after eminem at yankee stadium like i did. then watch him tear that mother fucker down the way he did. then youll think hes amazing my nigga

    • SixStar General

Everyone always uses that as a defense. He could have 300 paltinum solo albums. Doesn't mean he's good means he's popular. Is Soulja Boy good? No, he's popular. Jay remains in the game with a very loyal fan base a huge hype and praise from lots of people in the game, but me personally, I think he's not anything amazing. He's good but I'm not a fan. People need to stop using quantity of work, and money to defend there artist. Name something that actually makes him unique and great, not something that makes him rich and relevant.

nicely put my friend.. if you don't like Hova, it's cuz you're too stupid to understand what he's sayin'.. he's the best rapper alive.. he's smart as hell!. if you guys weren't so fuckin' dumb and you actually knew what he was sayin', then you would like him too.. Jay-Z even dumbs down his lyrics sometimes just so dumb-asses like you guys can understand him.. but apparently, you still can't..

  • Anonymous

Never understood the Jay-Z hype. Above average lyrisicm, mediocre flow.
