i actually really like this list..kanyes album was easily 1st or 2nd best this year so i dont know how anyone can argue against it being top album of the year. The suburbs was fucking amazing and definitely deserves second. And i love how big boi made the list cuz sir lucious left foot was bumpinnnnnnnnn.

  • HUCKONERS

Big ups to Jónsi, didnt expect to see him on here. Hes a real cool dude, I used to chill out by his studio a few years ago, nice to see him rock it like that.

Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy: Great production Nice rapping. abit stale with some of the verses though also Kanye needs to stop singing. B.o.B - The Adventures Of Bobby Ray: Cool pop rap album still play that shit. Nicki Minaj - Pink Friday: I don't care what you say that album was fire lol! Dabo - High Five: Album shits on weezys stupid album Kid Cudi - Man On The Moon II The Legend Of Mr. Rager: A very chill album sick beats

My opinion on their top 10: MBDTF = 4.5/5 (it had its faults, but it was still a unique, ambitious, honest, exciting and very well put together album) The Suburbs = 3/5 (disappointing. Their 2 previous albums were great, but this one was so boring) This Is Happening = 2.5/5 (extremely disappointing. Honestly, that rating is generous. There wasn't a single good song on here) High Violet = 3.5/5 (kinda basic, not as good as their others, but a solid album) Thank Me Later = 3/5 (Drake can rap. He's got punchlines, he's got storytelling ability, but he's just not interesting at all. And that's made a lot worse by the repetitive subject matter and an annoyingly monotone flow. It also didn't help that the production was weak.) The Age of Adz = 4/5 (awesome album, but it suffers from being boring at times. If you haven't heard it, definitely give this a listen) Brothers = 4/5 (dope, but a little formulaic) Old Blood = haven't heard it SLLF = 4/5 (Big Boi hasn't lost a step. I don't really care for all the songs on here (there are some clunkers), but like every other Outkast album, the songs have a great feel and flow to them and it makes it really come together as a whole) Teen Dream = haven't heard it

    • Swiss

Odd Blood and Teen Dream really were some of the best albums, but most hip-hop fans wouldn't know anything about that!

  • Jedi9al

Considering the initial rap formula that evaluates the music industries work on selecting an artists record has commited suicide by the jecture of this list. We must understand the psychology of the business to dumb us down with the works of this to guccie maine's part in maintaining an audiance that cannot see a future beyond their mom's crib or their own block. Maybe the youngster the booast about gucci maine should read what ball slobbering idol worship he said about Nas before he miss directs his little peepee like 2 year old and pisses on his self like he already has! Lastly, only kanye, mm and jay-z if considered still credible to you guys still mentions Nas's brillance in their music or media's top 10. Album of the year based on the initial music formula is DISTANT RELATIVES.

  • Mylie

besides Kanye album Nas and Damian Marley Distant Relatives is better then all those albums. why do they act like it never came out. is it because its positive music?

the future of hip-hop is here, Western Empire is on the rise peep game http://omg.ly/cIch

  • Hmm

This isn't as much of an accomplishment as it is a bad sign for the current state of music and hip hop in particular. Good for Big Boi though.

  • Gucci Mane kills Anonymous

LOL @ Anonymous... too scared to reveal your own name... THis is why you're wack. Go jack off to your Distant Relatives Illuminati record and Listen to real hip hop like Gucci Mane. It's Gucci Time! PS- I'm staying here forever until I convert 200 people here to Gucci fans from lame ass rappers like Phonte, Onyx or Lowkey.

    • Gucci sucks

U do realize the rapper you listen to named himself after a company famous for making designer purses right? And he is in either serious need of chap stick, just needs some water,or needs to clean up after he spreads crack all over his lips- either way he's still one of the worst rappers around

    • Anonymous

      YOU'RE A STUPID MUFUCKA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ?

this list is whack, I love kanye one of my facorites, but honestly i dont understand why this is #1 for sure it should be top 10 but not number 1, 2nd Drakes album is on this list you serious? 3rd Recovery didn't make it but thank me later did? WHACK!

  • Anonymous

Thank Me Later has no business being on the list at all. The blueprint 3 came out in 2009, this is why the best of '09 list should come out early '10 not when there's still 3 months left in the year. MBDTF should be below Recovery, i enjoyed it but it was just like late registration, plus 3 drawn out tracks this time around. Distant relatives should be on the list somewhere too it was a lot better than Drake's album, lil wayne seemed to put more heart into his one verse too

  • Almar

I really cant disagree with Kanye Having the best album, he probably should be the artist of the year too for all of the unbelieveable music he's put out this year, but I also think that The Roots album "How I Got Over" Should Of cracked the top 10 albums of the year, But oh well.

  • JDGOFTLB

Kanye and The Black Keys > every other album on the list. My Thoughts

  • Gucci Mane Kills Drake Eminem and Kanye West

Man fuck these fake ass pussy niggaz. Whoever made this list is as gay as a typical Nas stan bitching about a shitty album. Buy Gucci's album. It's Gucci Time!

  • B.K.illmind

Yooo why is Rick Ross being snubbed.... This is fucking Ridiculous he had one of the best albums of the years... (my personal opinion he needs to stop running with diddy so much, then he might get more integrity point)

  • Josh Corleone

Big Boi, Bun B,and Kayne had the best Hip Hop cds.

  • Anonymous

Kanye's album was the biggest piece of over inflatted crap ever released to the public. anyone who thinks such a piece of shit is so ground breaking or creative is just another ignorant fool tricked by the media as to think what is cool. what the hell does Time magazine know about hiphop anyways. they did get it right with bigboi but they really only puthim up there to make them seem more diverse, I guaratee no one from Time listend to it.

  • Chupps

Considering that the Times is taking every genre into consideration I'm happy they acknowledged Ye's standout hip-hop album as the best album of the year, because it was. Can't think of a better album this year. I don't know what Drake is doing on the list though, i listen to drake and you could call me a fan but his album was really quite average (or below because of the hype). Average lyrics on average beats with below average vocals (he really isn't a great singer). And as an 'album'/body of work, it really wasn't good while Kanye's all comes together, so well in fact you could consider it orchestrally conducted.

  • psukany

Miss Eligh , Nas & Damian marley, skyzoo and Reflection Eternal... i personnaly put Eligh - Grey Crow and Reflection Eternal - Revolution per minute to TOP 5 album who agree guys ?

  • rideonemjixxer

Kanye isnt number 1 to me. overrated album. Luv that Big Boi is up there. thats a fat slap in the face to atlantic for puttin him off. saying they didnt know how to market him. bet they regret that since it blew up and was released on def jam.

  • yes but...

Kanye number 1 : yes, honestly I can't think about a better album this year. Big Boi in top 10 : yes, he is underrated because of Andre 3000's popularity, and his album was good. Drake in top 10 : NO! He made a decent pop/rap album, but he is an average rapper/singer spitting on average beats, and the line-up of songs he made can't be considered as a great, coherent "album".

  • effort meet fail

blueprint 3 came out last year no need 2 be on this list smh skyzoo and !llmind live from the tapedeck should be on this list

  • John-Boy

That Big Boi album should be hire up the list. The Kanye is nice but that Big Boi was in my car CD player for about two months straight and I'm not exaggerating.

  • Mattik

Kanye needs to be on the top, but maybe like the 2nd or 3rd.

  • Anonymous

Drakes' album mde the list over Roots and Eminem's recovery? That was an immense slip-up

    • Anonymous

@Dick Ross I don't see ross' album anywhere on this list you damn troll, hahaha

    • Rick Ross the Bawse

@tempo Oh oh my nigga, you just opened up a can of worms with the shady stans when you say recovery is overrated. Ive been tryin to tell niggas for months that shit was fuckin overrated and then these shady dickriders will come out and talk shit. thank god rolling stone recognize that recovery was overrated and kept that shit off. Bawse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • TempoClash

The roots could be considered - quality album... Recovery on the other hand. I really cant believe how over-rated it has been (watch the bum boys go crazy over that comment by the way) but its what i feel. Iv only seen one review by Pitchfork that i think says what i feel about it (http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/14380-recovery/) i was completely drained by the album.. the way he wines and moans throughout bored me to death. Lyrically he didn't say anything groundbreaking (the way he adressed nearly going at wayne and kanye was quite interesting). I cant stand it when he sings (why did he ever start doing that). The beats were generic. I could go on... Im an eminem fan i love infinite, SSLP and MMLP but it bored me to death ... To salute a proper Eminem body of work I will highlight lines he has used that highlighted his genius on so many levels - "You heard of hell well I was sent from it I went to it serving a sentence for murderin' instruments Now I'm trying to repent from it But when I hear the beat I'm tempted to make another attempt at it..." "Hey, it's me, Versace Whoops, somebody shot me! And I was just checking the mail Get it? Checking the 'male'?" "I get imaginative with a mouth full of adjectives, a brain full of adverbs, and a box full of laxatives (Shittin on rappers)" The Top 4 are all really great albums... Agree that drake shouldnt be there

  • Anonymous

i see Bun B's Trill OG album wuz too real n aggressive for Time magazine. its all good. i would rate dat number 1 in my book

  • em

u can threw that kanya ablum in the trash so horrible

  • em

all those top 10 ablums sucks and borin just drake had a good ablum the rest are trash

  • em

were is recovery kanya west ablum is boring and it sucks no hits off of that ablum it should be up for the biggest flop of the year and on of the wrost of the year

  • ???????????

no blueprint 3, recovery,or the roots? this is not official tear it down!!!

    • TempoClash

But this is a top 10 albums of the year list... if you think it is that good i no longer believe people have taste The Top 4 are all really great albums - no 5 is drake??? sorry

  • nj

Drake above Big Boi? No. Where the hell are The Roots? Half the albums here suck ass. Kanye's completely eclipses everything though.

  • john redcorn

I'm searching up and down that list for the legendary Roots crew. They're nowhere to be found, and I am disappoint.

  • Anonymous

yeah big boi def had an underrated album. in fact, i think his was as good as kanye's. i def wanted to see the roots on there too. Those were the 3 best albums to me as fas as production, lyrics and no skippable tracks. i think peopel want Drakes' album to be something it isn't

  • Anonymous

look im all for kanye getting his props, dude is amazing, but this is like his third best album at best...late registration and graduation kill that shit

  • dontgiveafuck.

drake 'number 5' before big boi 'number 9' in the top 10 ?? get the fuck outta here time magazine ! as far as kanye, his fruity ass music is only listened by gay people !

    • C.j. Lampkins

Thank God for people like Joe. That gets old. Obviously dontgiveafuck doesn't give a fuck but let's try to at least tone down the ignorance a bit.

    • dontgiveafuck.

@joe0226 just shut the fuck up

    • Joe0226

Grow up man, all that child talk about "bitch ass pussies" and fag this fag that. Like Jay and Drake said, we off that

    • dontgiveafuck.

haha always expecting bitch ass pussies catching feelings when it comes to talk bad bout their favorite mc's dick

    • ihatethedudenameddontgiveafuck

hey leave gay ass dontgiveafuck alone aight, he has prolly got wocka flocka's whole catalogue on repeat in his little sisters pink sony boombox, he also copped a diggy simmons t-shirt to rock out at his junior prom...

    • Joe0226

We should be happy they put it in the top 10 at all -- that's a pretty big accomplishment for hip hop to have an album like that recognized in Time. Plus Drake's album is solid too, its just a different style of hip hop. Jazz music in the 1950s sounded a lot different than jazz music in the 1920s and 30s, but both styles were really good. Same with hip hop.

  • durasil

the question is: where the fuck is Distant Relatives?
