Def Jam Records Has Reportedly Spent $3 Million On Kanye West's New Album

With recording sessions in a mansion in Hawaii, as well as Jimi Hendrix' New York studio, the guest-filled "Dark Twisted Fantasy" was expensive to make.

Kanye West's fifth album, reportedly now titled Dark Twisted Fantasy is one of the most anticipated releases of 2010. The Def Jam Records release has featured extensive recording sessions in a Hawaii mansion as well as Jimi Hendrix' Electric Lady Studios in Lower Manhattan. Still recording, VladTV.com has reported that they've learned that the release's expenses exceed three million dollars.

With invited guests to the work ranging between Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj, Jay-Z, Raekwon, Mos Def, Swizz Beatz, Pete Rock, DJ Premier, S-1, Mike Dean and Pusha T, this may be one of Rap's most expensive albums in the Recession era. Morever, Vlad has learned that West reportedly employed two private chefs, who traveled with the superstar throughout his album-making process.

Earlier this week, Kanye West spoke about a 40 minute short film he made to song "Runaway" .

700,000 albums back in the day was a pretty common occurance, no matter what the label was. for being thoughtful you dont do much thinking

    • Mr. Thoughtful

Especially when Def Jam and Interscope artists do numbers that were unheard of back in the day when people actually bought records...ie, 700,000 units in the 1st week, you know what I mean. Artists like The beatles never even sold units like that in debut weeks....and now people like Drake, Em, Weezy and Jay-Z are eclipsing them nowadays in the recession, pirate bay era? It's not making sense.

    • Mr. Thoughtful

@Answer...cosign. I wonder how it's possible that most artists sell something like 12000 units in their first week...unless they're on Def Jam or Interscope. Makes you think.

    • Answer

only interscope & def jam and assholes who work at best buy and fake scan the numbers

  • allyallstupid

fuck def jam, ever since they shelved joe budden i haven't been a fan

  • Anonymous

LOOK HERE I PUT EVERYTHNG I OWN... DEF JAM WILL REAP 3 TIME THAT PROFIT BY THE TIME THIS ALBUM DROPS...WITH ALL THE MUZIK YE BEEN PUTTIN OUT SINCE THE WHOLE G.O.O.D FRIDAY RELEASE..? DEF JAM EXECS NEED TO CROSS THIER LEGS AND WATCH THE MONEY ROLL IN ..@ LEAST 1.5MILL FIRST MONTH

    • Mr. Thoughtful

Agreed. Def Jam puts money in Kanye because he's gonna return. You can't name one other rapper who knows how to grab headlines like Kanye...I'm talking global headlines...add in some talent (which he has in spades) and you got a platinum record on your hands. It's gonna be money well spent. I should buy stock in whoever owns Def Jam nowadays lol.

  • John

Damn you guys are some dumb ass mofo's. Do you not understand the industry at all? You know this nigga Ye spent 1 million dollars for 1 MUSIC VIDEO (Touch The Sky)?!?!? Album sales aren't the only thing that recoups the costs, tours, merchandise, performances, and everything else. If you can't tell yet, Kanye can basically do whatever the fuck he wants. One year he can interrupt America's sweetheart and best selling artist that year at a show, and than come back the next year and be the shows main act. He's chillin on twitter and tells Raekwon he wants a verse, and the next day we get a Ye feat. Raekwon track. This nigga can do WHATEVER THE FUCK HE WANTS. He has an obsessed following, this nigga is gonn' sell and he's gonna sell a fuckload. He's probably triple this fucking shit, Def Jam ain't stupid, nigga goin on his fifth album, they know what Kanye does. Look at how much artists make, Ye hasn't had an album out for 2 years and hasn't toured yet he still made 8 mill (most of it outside of his own business ventures) - this nigga WILL make them way more money.

    • @john

anybody can do whatever the fuck they want. Its america, you make money and thats it case closed. You go on vacations, sit at hotels in nice resorts, go to 5 star restuaraunts, hook up with the hottest bitches in the game, every fuckin day son. 24/7/365. Can't tell me when the escorts close, can't tell me when the hot bitches ain't hanging out, can't tell me when the restuaraunts close, can't tell me when the beaches close, can't tell me when the resorts close. So fuck the fuck off. This bitch kanye can't do jack shit, he can't show his face to the public, he has to sit around the assholes who control them every day. kanye is a fuckin media monkey don't do jack shit but butt fuck assholes up the ass, hold satanic rituals, and hide from the real mothefuckers who really get things done.

  • Anonymous

Kanye goin do numbers its all a matter of if he can recoup what he has spent. Check out my beats and some up and coming artists at www.soundclick.com/philadefentertainmentllc.We tryin to bring some new flavor to the game. A&R's should definetly be checking this material out.

  • Anonymous

I really like Kanye's music but how do you spend 3 million on 1 album and videos and promotions have yet to be completed. The funny thing is Def Jam doesn't care because it Kanye that has to recoup those fees. I hope for his sake the Taylor Swift incident doesn't work against him. He will go platinum but Im not certain he will recoup the money spent on this album. Chances are he will owe Def Jam on his next album release.

    • fuck twitter

recoup my ass you fuckin liar. no shot in hell for 4 mil you fuckin racist pig bastard go stuff a tranny up your ass

    • ceeonemusic

LOL $13.00 per album x 1 Million Albums Sold = Recoup! Its nothing for a label to spend this kind of money on an album, its just that this year, Kanye's album is the only guaranteed platinum album to drop. Even Universal didnt spend as much on Drake's album, its mostly in-house production and recordings on the tour bus and home studios. But Kanye is a guarantee, he will have pushed 4 mill before this album comes off the top 200. he just needs the right single to kill radio with. He doesn't have that #1 he needs yet, its coming though, I'm sure of it.

    • Light

Dude, you should learn to add and multiply before you type silly shit

  • tony

KANYE IS ONE OF THE GREATEST. PERIOD!!!! JESUS CHRIST, OBAMA, JOHN KENEDY,TUPAC, KANYE WEST... THESE MEN FOUGHT FOR A BETTER WORLD.!!

  • Big Jaw West

Spending 3 mill on this douche's artsy garbage is ridiculous. Couldn't this really have been made for a little less money? Send that cash to the poor and hungry, 500k should be plenty enough to make a great album or two.. unless of course, you're self-centered egoistic prick who just has to have two private chefs at all times and go to all-expense-paid vacat..excuse me, work trip to Hawaii mansions. Fuck this tired dude.

  • Dmac

All you hatin ass no talent ass niggas on here gon still listen to the album, why???? cause your curious enough to see what he will produce and put out, giving him recognition. all the songs he has dropped has been A and B grade, that means there passing and the album will be fire! DTF top album of the year

  • time

he's gonna sell a million in the first 1-3 weeks. At $14.00 a CD do the math. Thats a lot of money. Then add the worldwide tour thats gonna follow AND sell out every night then add all the ringtones and songs downloaded individually - whether you like him or not he (and Def Jam) are gonna get a HUGE return on this investment. Period.

    • Anonymous

why do that when u can download it for free or go to ur local arab and get it for 2$ just like wayne nobody gonna by it but they gonna say it sold 3-4 mill the only mf going plat is Em

    • no $14

nobody is payin $14 anymore for a cd stop lying and jackin up the price

  • NY+

On average if an album sells a 1 million copies that will earn an artist about 1.5/1.75 million dollars. While earning the companies 5-8 million all depending on the contracts. Kanye more than likely is getting a larger share than most, so off a million sales he may get 2-3 million. He on average worldwide sells 4-5 million, so Def Jam could make about 10 to 20+ million off his albums, therefore 3 million+ on recording, producers, videos, and marketing is worth the just about shoe-in 7 million they'll make.

    • NY+

STFU to the first fuck head. CDs (not iTunes singles) range from 10-15 dollars. Simple math, before its all divided up amongst participating parties (stores, distributors, producers etc) if you sell 1 Million CDs given that range, you should make 10-15M. Therefore someone who on average sells 3Million domestically, their album could make a total US profit of 30-45 Million~

    • Anonymous

man what kind of math u doing cds dont even cost that much for them to make that where the fucc do u get those # from

    • so what

stick the money up ya fuckin ass choke on it.

  • riot

Y'all are a bunch of fucking haters. This album will be ill. Must have forgotten pre 808's 'ye

stfu with that label making up number bullshit. STOP BEING FUCKEN HATERS. if you hate EVERY BIG NAME IN HIP HOP GO TO R&B. kanye has been droppin dimes with GOOD friday, hes not my favorite but hes pretty chil. stop with all the petty bullshit and just listen to the music.

    • Sharper

nah sharpshooter its time for you to shut the fuck up you fuckin dumb ass. nobody hates kanye he's a fuckin faggott. Real people are looking out for the american public, and this pig wants to steal money from the teenagers. Kanye West is the hater, dude is a straight up pig.

Kanye is a bigger diva than most of the women in the music industry... no fuck it he is a bigger diva than ANY woman in the industry. .. and from what we've heard from this album its been 3million wasted.

  • bios

that is a lot of money to spend on a record, particularly nowadays, but Kayne is almost guaranteed to sell at least 3-4 million worldwide at the very least.

    • @preach

HAHAHA!! they spendin 3 mil cause they chokin. that's their last resort. fakin a bunch of bullshit that is what they doin.

    • preach

so why would a company spend 3 mill, just so they can inflate a album number. I been to business school that makes zero sense. but if you wanna believe that go ahead silly thoughts.

    • @bios

total joke. that faggot aint sellin shit. label will fake the numbers

  • rusa

this guy is extremely smart, he knows how to get fans and general people that dont like hip hop attentions this dude is fuckin smart he;s gona sell record watch

  • Light

Calm down people only reason this is news is because Kanye is a hot topic now. Labels been spending big bucks on albums. You people act like you don't remember half a million dollar videos and beats that where sold for $50,000. The label will make that money back the first 2 weeks.

    • Anonymous

yeah half a million dollar videos and shit afterwards not this much just to be putting the album together... and this shit isnt even done yet. major fail def jame, you might earn your money back on this in 3-4 years.. maybe

  • Adrian A-Classic Joseph

Frankly whatever it takes to surpass his previous work will be an accomplishment. Kanye has always aimed to take things to the next level, he never aims to reprocess what he did before. He is a trendsetter, innovator and leader therefore the pressure on him to produce nothing but great is sitting squarely on his shoulders. I have every confidence that he will deliver. Black people need to support one another more and not have the 'crabs in a bucket' mentality. White people support Eminem whether he's produced average or amazing albums. But black people have so much self-hatred we can't stand to see a brother shine. SAD. Kanye keep doing you. No one is going to remember the idiots and lowlifes that post negative and meaningless comments on a website anyway.

    • blakboi

Yeah i feel u brother it's sad it's sad but i don't even get it if u don't have shit nice to say shut the fuck up if he's gay let him be the gay mutherfucker can make the hell out of some music thats all i know and im supporting his punk ass im out dis bitch one

    • tony

Well said brother we need to learn how to support one another. I cant wait for Ye album to drop am gonna buy a least 3 and give as present to friends and familly. Personally I think Ye is an icon up there wiv the greats! A man who is not afraid to speak his mind and face the consequences. I RESPECT THAT. nowaday the world will hate you for speaking the truth but thank god we still got people like YE!

    • Anonymous

@ Adrian...you're telling me I can't speak my mind about a rapper just because he's the same race as me!?..I'm sorry but that is a horrible way to live life..hopefully you don't teach that to your kids if you have any..ones race should never change your opinion on that person...ps: your picture got me laughing my ass off!!..corny looking muthafucka!

    • Anonymous

why do you have to demean things down to race? life is so much more complicated than that, pull your head out of your ass and you might realize that

    • frank

Well said my brother, I totally agree with you. Am from Africa, Nigeria to be precise and when i be reading the post by some people or comments about a black man towards his own blk man, its a big shame. Here in Africa, we idolize your hip hop artist, we don't care if he is gay, or this or that, long as he gives us good muzik we good. When Ye came out here, the placed was packed, same as Jay , Nas, Nelly. Wat i don't understand is dat, African -Americans hate to see their own brother shine, its really sad....

    • @Adrian

you're a fake. nice phony advertising

  • Lay

LOL!!!!!!! 3 million dollars!!??? U better have a great album. With a 3 million dollar budget, how can you go wrong? I'm not as impressed with him as I used to be.....

    • Anonymous

3million and its not even done yet! they havent even gone into marketing and promotion of the album yet or made any videos for it really.

  • Sutter Kane

Figures, he's a primadonna I give Kanye respect in the sense that at least his music says somethig, just happens to be he says things I dont care about. But, I'd rather see this dude put out a hit then Wayne or any of these other mediocre idiots, so I guess I support him in a way. Kanye's the type of cat who I would never buy an album from because I dont get into preachy, Metro-Sexual Rap, but at least he sounds like he graduated from 3rd grade, unlike most of his peers, so compared to his competition, kinda hard to bitch about him I'll wait and D/L the Instrumental LP personally tho

  • Total Garbage

Get this two faced fuckin liar outta here and fuck his album. Fuck this pig.

  • John Book

The reference to chefs mean absolutely nothing to the music. However, considering what has surfaced so far, I bet most of the costs are due to sampling clearances and not for guests. The bad thing is how expensive it will be, and arguably how much we are going to hear music from this album for the next two years. The good thing is if the released songs are any indication, maybe people are truly listening to hip-hop and not just using it as a trendy wallpaper for assumed coolness.

    • TheShow

It's for the damn MANSIONS! like what the article said you doedoe, and two private chefs! or.....it's for them expensive skinny jeans he likes. lol
