Young Money, Eminem Dominate Half-Year Top Album Sales

Lil Wayne's label has four of the Top 10-selling Rap albums in 2010, as Gucci Mane, B.o.B., Ludacris, Jay-Z and Eminem also make the list.

With 2010 half over, music sales figures have been tabulated. Within the Top 10 sellers of the Rap/Hip Hop genre for this year, two Georgia rappers, B.o.B. and Gucci Mane make first time appearances. Bobby Ray's Grand Hustle/Atlantic Records debut, The Adventures of Bobby Ray is the sixth-best seller in the genre, clearing over 280,000 units to date. Gucci, who began this year imprisoned, has sold over 185,000 units this year of his Warner Brothers 2009 album, The State vs. Radric Davis.

The big winner however, is Lil Wayne's Young Money Records. With a distribution deal through Universal Motown, the Cash Money Records subsidiary includes Wayne, Drake and soon-to-be released Nicki Minaj. Among the Top 10 Rap albums sold this 2010, Young Money had four (in order of top to bottom): Drake's Thank Me Later, Lil Wayne's Rebirth, Young Money's We Are Young Money and Drake's So Far Gone. The latter two both released in 2009, with strong sales into this year.

From a major label perspective, among the 10,Universal/Motown releases lead with the four YM releases, Atlantic follows with two (Jay-Z's Blueprint 3 and B.o.B.), Interscope with two (Eminem's Relapse and Recovery), while Def Jam and Warner Brothers end out the list with one release each (Gucci Mane and Ludacris's Battle of the Sexes).

In overall sales, Eminem's Recovery comes fifth, behind Justin Bieber, Sade, Lady Gaga and top-seller Lady Antebellum.

    • Reality1111

Yes, I went east coast heavy, but I did go West Coast #1 & #2. I got Cube in there, maybe I should put Eazy E in there, Me personally, I think Cube did it best for NWA. Joe Budden I'm not sure Top 25 but maybe Top 50. Method Mad is close, though I may go Ghostface before Method, but Rae reps Wu for me I don't want to go to Wu heavy in my list. Will listen more to Ras Kass. Lupe is too corny for me as are most of the new guys.

    • Hersh Dersh

I dont argue with no one list but I mean you forgot a couple of west coast rappers like Ras Kass whos metaphors can kill SOME not ALL of Lupe... #justsayintho. and what about Joe Budden? Methodman? Eazy E? just to throw a couple out there

"B real is in no ones top 100" Because most of you are stupid that's why. "Jay Z aint top 24?????" Exactly. He's about money, not hip hop. I'm not stupid enough to fall for that bullshit. "Buckshot??? He was kew for a minute, like 20yrs ago" I'll consider that and possibly drop him down a few notches. "Camron, prodigy???? top 50 maybe" HAAA!! You can't handle the realness. "Raekwon and Snoop are not top 10 " Yes they are son. Have to respect the Wu and what Snoop brings to the table.

The playing field in the music industry is not even. Its not like each artist gets 1000 at bats or plays in 1000 games. Its not like every artist gets to create and compose any kind of song they want to and every one of those songs gets equal air play. Do you think Hot 97 plays Rakim 500 times, Jay 500 times, Eminem 500 times, Biggie 500 times, 2 pac 500 times? No. Every artist's song is given a different amount of exposure. Jay doesn't go into the Hot 97 studio and says OK play my song now. Other people play his song for him, and other people decide approximately how much exposure they will get. Some of you act like every rapper in the history of the world all got on 1 stage, they passed the mic around and everybody got 100 bars. And then everybody else in the history of the world got to listen to the entire recording and then rankings were based off of that. That's not how it works. Sales numbers can be deceiving also, because say for example the Roots pushed 60,000 units but that went to 60,000 different listeners, whereas for example Drake pushed 400,000 units but that went to only 100,000 different listeners because multiple listeners bought multiple copies. That is why ranking rappers or anybody else in the music industry is an opinion. Me personally I think BReal is the greatest rapper ever at this point but that is my personal opinion. I think that Cypress and House of Pain contributed alot more to the game than most people are aware of, but that is my opinion. I'm not going to try and back that up with facts because it is my opinion. And if you disagree with me, it is what it is, I'm not going to try and argue my point one way or the other. And that is what opinions are. They are not based on facts. The music industry is not based on facts.

  • MR. I'M DOIN ME

FOR ALL YOU LIL WAYNE HATERS, LET ME GIVE YOU SOMETHIN TO THINK ABOUT 1. MEN LIE, WOMEN LIE, NUMBERS DONT!!! (JAY-Z) 2. IF YOU WAS TO ASK ALL OF THE RELEVANT ARTIST IN THE MUSIC BIZ TODAY WHO IS BEST RAPPER IN THA GAME (AND THEY COULDN'T PICK THEMSELVES) 75% OF THEM WOULD SAY WAYNE. 3. ***THINK HARD*** WHO IN THA HISTORY HIP HOP HAS BE "ARGUABLY" THE BEST RAPPER ALIVE, HAS THA HOTTEST MALE PROTEGE IN THA GAME, HAS THA HOTTEST FEMALE PROTEGE IN THA GAME, HAS THA HOTTEST GROUP IN THA GAME??? 4. • Millz16

Those numbers say who's the most popular artist not necessarily the most talented lyricists...does album sales say you are the most popular rapper alive yes...does it say you are the best rapper alive no...remember the roots cleared only around 90k on there album but it is better than rebirth...just sayin

    • goldenchyld

@Mr. I'm a Doin Me-Lil Wyane does not or never will have the influence of a 2pac Shakur.....R u serious about record sales?????? All eyes on me, 7 day Theory, and his greatest albums have sold more than 50 million alone worldwide....This man have his own college course....Man 2day's music is watered down....Young Money....The hottest group how r they???? Black Eye Peas r double platium on their way 2 triple, and their album came out early last year, and still in the top 10...Bro I come from a era where going gold was no prob...Lil Wayne isn't even in the top 100 to me....I've heard 2 many legends, real lyricists who changed the game..Hip Hop has never had anything 2 do with sales, it was about skills...But if u want 2 talk about sales he wouldn't even be in the convo....I came name plenty of artist who sold way more than him!!!!!!!!

Everyone knows who number one is. The real question is who is number 2 and 3. Side note: In fact, it's just plain disrespectful, hypocritical, and impossible by every measuring standard of rap how people make fools of themselves trying to explain all the reasons he wouldn't be number one. Influence is one thing, ability to rap better than others is another, and he is the only one outside of BIG who came from the underground and flew passed the pinnacle of success in the industry of Rap, and is still doing it today. 2. Jay 3. Pac

    • Reality1111

The response is long because I want to explain what I wrote. Pac #3 seems ok to me, I never said that was a bad choice but it is an opinion. "You know that there are practical ways of finding an opinion of the majority." I don't agree with this statement because not everybody says what they feel, some just go with the crowd to look like they are a part of the majority. "unanimous vote," That's not going to happen in hip hop. "or in musics case purchasing of albums)" Like I said if one Eminem fan buys 100 albums, it goes down as 100 albums, but its only 1 fan. Pac could be #3 Personally I would go 1.BReal 2.2Pac 3.Rakim 4.Kool G Rap 5.Raekwon

    • minuslain

Reality11111. Why so long of a response. You know that there are practical ways of finding an opinion of the majority. (unanimous vote, or in musics case purchasing of albums) Why don't you think Pac is number 3? How did you make that conclusion?

    • Reality1111

And to add on, it is questionable whether or not 2Pac's people led to his own downfall. Perhaps if he had different people surrounding him, he'd still be rapping and making hits today. And if that was the case I don't see how you would rank Jay ahead of Pac, because Pac would have another 14 years in his music catalog and that would most likely be enough to surpass him. On the other hand maybe Jay's people deserve some recognition because he is still making hits and doing his thing today. He didn't do everything 100% on his own. So when you want to rank people, understand that alot of people behind the scenes go into making an artist successful. And when you hear a Jay or Pac song, you're not just hearing Jay or Pac, you're also hearing others who contributed to what you hear or see on the tv or radio. That's why ranking people musically is an opinion.

    • Reality1111

Nobody has any clue what you are talking about. A #1 rapper is an opinion. You act like the only thing a rapper does is go into the studio and record and that's it, they are judged and based on thier performance alone. All different kinds of artists and rappers have different people backing them and different people who contribute to marketing and promoting them. No rapper has no friends and does the entire shit by themselves. You only bought up two names, so nobody knows who else you are talking about. Jay & Pac. Both Jay & Pac had a host of people who contributed to their careers. Whether it was to back them financially, get their foot in the door as far as the industry goes, ghost write them a few verses, compose the beats for them, get them on key interviews to help boost their sales, advertise their product the right way, put people around them to protect them and assure them they are in the right frame of mind to continue on as an artist. Lots of things and lots of people go into an artist's success. Not every song that Jay & Pac made was 100% written and composed by only them. Other people make the beats most of the time, and others contribute to versus and recording. You claim Jay is ahead of Pac, but both rappers had different people surrounding them. If 2Pac had Jay's people, and Jay had 2Pac's people maybe you would rank Pac ahead of Jay because what you would hear from each artist would be somewhat different that what you have heard so far today. That is why ranking rappers is an opinion. And to this day, not 1 rapper has ever composed and produced 100% of their product, so you don't know what you're talking about when you talk about #1 rappers like its a fact. Its your opinion. And I respect your opinion. However your opinion speaks for you, it doesn't automatically speak for everybody else in the world.

@Em#1 Fan u are the #1 Fag!! on the whole entire internet..You come on hip hop dx everyday tyrna big up Feminem like anyone cares..take his Cock out your mouth faggot damn..he's on your mind everyday huh?? there isn't a moment u don't think of your boyfriend. and Sales do not = Quality u stupid dumb ass little kid..So is eminem encore quality because it sold 5 million records?? fuck no everybody knows that album was trash and is one of the worst albums ever created..Damn if Feminem ever needs a lawyer we all know who to call...Lol..U stay suckin that dick huh?? shit you probably would do his court trials for free huh..that's how gay u are.You might as well eat Eminems Farts!! drink his pee,eat his cum, lick his ass crack, finger his asshole, let him booty rape u..You are officially a Homo now and forever..Feminem is not Muhammad Ali or Michael Jordan..P.S Get laid ASAP..oh yea that's right you like Men i forgot..FAGGOT!!!..keep beating your meat to Eminems posters

    • Reality1111

Why Em is NOT #1 1.His language is TOO inappropriate. He overdoes it. He says the most nasty and disgusting things you can think of. "wife's vagina?" I mean c'mon Rakim would never stoop that low. 2.He's too negative. He goes too hard with the serial killer stuff. Look by all means get crazy but when you cross the line and go way over the line many many times, its just overdoing it a bit. 3.He's not the same person in the studio as in live interviews. No matter where I see KRS-1 he is always the same. KRS is always on point. Em has too many multiple personalities. 4.He came after 1996 and the game behind him did not improve. Rapping after 1996 is not the only factor. That combined with the state of hip hop is. Hip hop is not getting better. Right now he is hip hop's biggest influence. If he was the best, rap and hip hop would be at an all-time high. That's not what is happening. He influences fans to root for Eminem. He's not really influencing rappers to step their game up. 5.What he did to his former wife. She went home and slit her wrists after a concert. Look, girls can be crazy, but if this happens, you automatically cannot be #1 IMO. 6.He gets too much help from the industry and the machine behind the industry. Most of the better rappers didn't get mainstream support for a reason. Because they went against the grain of mainstream. 7.He sings too damn much. 8.His fans butt fuck too much. Most of the better rappers didn't have "stans" The highest I'll put Em is #11, he can't be in the Top 10 because of the reasons listed above IMO.

    • minuslain

How is Eminem not the best to do it? (Ok everyone listen to the contradictory response.)

  • JasonCTown

@EMFAN#1.. Here it is, Im gonna try and break this down for you so maybe you understand where I, and many others, are coming from. I certainly get your, ahem, 'points.' Sales dont equal greatness, however they're important for many reasons....but Im not here to argue for those reasons. Hip-hop, and music in general, is an art.....in the most basic of forms. If there was no money to be had in this world, music would still be here. (if you had a time machine, you could go back in time and watch cavemen bang on shit with rocks and bones as they danced around a fire and grunted.....music? to them it was!) Movies are no different. Some of the greatest films out there are/were independent/sub-culture projects that either grew to be big in time or may some day. I may not have to pay for that movie as I can watch it at a friends house, or through some other media. Same thing with music, a friend could lace me with a copy of something that never reached #1 on any chart out there. No amount of money is going to tell me what is good, not to these ears. When I sit back in bed, or on plane, with my headphones on....or if I smash out in my car somewhere....the artistic value of that music is what makes it worth it, not the greenbacks that people make off of it. I hope you get this, because if you're only going to listen to something because it's a money making machine, well, then, you're missing out on greatness all around you. ALL AROUND YOU. You just need to have an open mind, which seems to be a problem for you.

    • minuslain

How do you know all these details about an MC you think is not number one if you don't like him? If someone has to explain why Eminem is the best to a person who appreciates lyricism, the listener is either retarded or they have absolutely no credibility in being objective. There is nothing anyone could say to point out the obvious dominance of Eminem to a person insecure about there self image. You and many others equate being "black" as hip hop, and vice versa. Subsequently, anyone who doesn't look like you and masters whatever craft you've fixed as your identity, rocks your entire world leaving blind irrationality as the only option. No one questions: Tiger, the Williams Sisters, heck even President Obama (whom I didn't vote for but respect as talented orator) so on and so on, unless it is the other way around. Heck, I'm a choreographer (Hip Hop and Lindy Hop) and most who do it today our minorities in the craft and have no (race) excuses to underperform. In fact they have to do it better, leaving the ball back in the court of people like you to give excuses. So sad but true.

Lol you people make me laugh with those '' Who's the top MC alive'', ''My top 5 list'' . . . Many of those MCs catch each others attention depending what we are lookin' for... You wanna learn how to sell drugs go listen to Jay Z. You wanna learn how to hate white people go listen to Dead Prez. You wanna learn to build your own opinion go listen to Immortal Technique. You wanna learn how to battle go listen to Big L. You wanna learn how to hate your mom then feeling sorry for releasing a shitty album go listen to Eminem. You wanna learn how to hate on everything 'cept your mom, go listen to Pac, you wanna learn nonsense go listen to David Banner x Wack x Soulja Boy... Music is for entertainment and drifting away... I mean one the best album of 2010 is probably not even a US artist who made it. Go listen to Hocus Pocus - 16 pieces and you'll understand what hip hop is really about. And KRS-One is by far the most influential MC. PEACE!

Underground, I like Immortal technique, Diabolic, tech9, RA the rugged man. Ice Cube is slept on way to much. His career from NWA to his solo joints, to his diss tracks, to his "don't give a fuck" attitude, to his opinions on politics and hip hop culture. The man is a legend.

well well, all I can say is the only way I see hiphop not being a power in the music industry anymore would be due to over saturation, artist need to learn how to take some time off , and also I think that if they really care about hiphop they should have some kind of gridlock on rappers who only get in the game to make a quick buck, that music there is whats killing the vibe but that's only my dream to many record labels out there are starving so they promote wackness they don't give a fuck, but aslong as we have our jay z's and our em's and just lil wayne (from a real hiphop ceo perspective and not some jew cracker) the hiphop genre will do just fine.

  • c/gaddic

Young Money had the four highest selling albums Pity they had nowhere near the best four albums for 2009-10 Rebirth was utter rubbish, WAYM-compilation was abysmal and TMLater is a mediocre album can't wait when LIil wayne leaves prison to prove whether he's just a gimmick or an actually artist who's gonna be relevant if the next 5-6 years Or become another Nelly Then the haters and hardcore fans of rap with actual taste in good music can start to rejoice and rub it in the face of the dickriders It was fun with fif can't wait for lil gayne

    • CLIPZO

That was perfect like dead on sales isnt about the quality of music its the buzz and gimmmicks surrounding the artist. I dont like Weezy because his music has no coherence but he has mass appeal and thats all that matters to the big label execs

    • CLIPZO

That was perfect like dead on sales isnt about the quality of music its the buzz and gimmmicks surrounding the artist. I dont like Weezy because his music has no coherence but he has mass appeal and thats all that matters to the big label execs

    • asa

      jasonctown treated emfan!!!!!!

    • JasonCTown

Well, now you see that most ppl here dont hate Em, there here to keep you in last place....takin' L's consistently. For an experimental album, that shit went gold.....which in todays culture is impressive. The album sucked regardless.

    • Em Fan #1

JASONCTOWN, Rebirth DID NOT SELL WELL. It probably barely hit gold by now. And damn I made a post not about Eminem or record sales and you hate on me. SMH

    • JasonCTown

@EMFAN#1... Keep takin' L's, Queen.....waiting for you to spew nonsense once again.

    • HI HATERZZ

sorry fellas, not gonna happen. weezy been around since what 97 98?? might as well get use to it. the minimum amount of time he's be around is 5-6 yrs but its possibel to see him around for another 10yrs. cant u ppl see by now that your dislike for him means nothing and has no effect on his ability to sell and appeal to the masses. its not about what you like, its about the hoi polloi and your opinion is jus a needle in that haystack in that realm

    • JdotPIPE

yes those albums you named are trash but homie wayne been around and relavent for bout 12 years if he fall when he get out he had a nice run most niggas dont last 2 years

    • JasonCTown

@EMFAN#1... but that album, Rebirth, sold well.....so by your retarded logic, that album was good.

    • Em Fan #1

Holy shit I forgot Rebirth even existed. I remember when it first came out all the Wayne dick riders said that Wayne was a genius for doing something different. Well different doesn't equal good. His attempt at "rock" somehow sent rock music back 50 years and I'm not even a huge rock music fan

    • JasonCTown

Ha, preach it. Sales this, sales that.....take ur sales pitch and jump into an acid bath, dickriders!

  • JasonCTown

@EMFAN#1 Fact vs. Opinion ??? Do you know the difference. Oh, you're a queen.

    • CLIPZO

I dont think theres such thing as fact in music unless you are reffering to sales but quality is all opinion as in any kind of art i think sure emfan#1 loves eminem and hes my favvourite rapper aswell because i can relate to him even now when his music has changed but yea i think sales are the only thing that are fact in music because opinions vary and theres no way to say that an opinion iis a fact is this what u mean lol im not challenging u ,your statement just puzzled me

Everyone should do themselves a favor and check out Homeboy Sandman, from NY. The album's called The Good Sun. Best album of the year, next to How I Got Over. Just a suggestion from one real hip hop head to the rest.

  • MightyMike27

"If album sales were the way they should be it would be as the following... 2010 ~~~~ #1-Nas and Damian Marley #2-Reflection Eternal #3-Eminem, Recovery #4-Freeway & Jake One #6-The Roots, How I Got Over ..... Just My Opinion... But the fans never get it right.. Open your eyez peepz! Check those albumz out people...(If You Haven't) PeaCe!

  • zackg

Whats up with you ignorant dumbfucks not knowing how to use the words "sales" and "sells". What an artist sells is counted up and displayed as their sales. Until you understand that basic shit stop posting some retarded argument. And for those arguing that album sales mean something, consider this. If you make a comment on here that reads "Album sales matter!" but nobody on hiphopdx replies and says you are right, does it change how meaningful your post was? If nobody says shit back to you is your post whack as fuck?

Album sells matter cause if people like it, they buy it. blame bootleggers all u want but the good rappers is still goin platinum. Their contract is based on CD's they can sell. Dont let nobody say sells dont matter. Thats what the music industry does.

  • Em Fan #1

only delusion rap fans who reminise over 1995 think sales don't mean shit. There was a time your favorite rapper sold millions but now he's washed up and nobody cares about him therefore they sale a box worth of albums from fans who can't let go of the past. Sale=quality. It may not mean a classic album but it means that it captured the audience the audience went to buy the album. I wouldn't consider soulja boy album a classic but its a great album because it did what little rappers these days can do...capture an audience and if Eminem every flops (won't happen) I'd consider him a washed up nobody. But until then...

    • Reality1111

@Heat. Em Fan #1 isn't speaking their mind, they are advertising, they are trying to get you to buy and album you already know about. When you talk about different subjects you speak your mind. When you say the same thing over and over and over again you're just trying to sell something to someone.

    • asa

and here comes da hero heat w/ his "realness"!\\ hahahahaha

    • asa

@emfan did u even read anything i wrote?

    • Heat-357

Yo Em Fan.... Keep speakin your mind... The dudes that are responding to your comment are pathetic... Ive noticed there are 3 kinds of bloggers on here... 1. people with opinions... 2. people who wait for other people to post opinions and try to start an argument 3. People who just have fun... You are a 1. they are a 2. I am a 3.

    • Reality1111

No. You're the one who doesn't get it. You're advertising. People don't want that. They want real shit.

    • Em Fan #1

You guys don't seem to get it, while album sales aren't the only thing that determines a good album, it does however determine whether or not the general public thinks the artists has created good music. Again if you were to take 100 people in a room and ask who's better, lil Wayne or The Roots. MOST people would choose Wayne. Why? Because not only does he make quality music, but he makes music people WANT to hear. The more people WANT to hear the albums and BUY them the more people are exposed to the music. The Roots made a good album, but its not great because less than a million people care to listen to it. Therefore it's not making noise to the general public. Therefore at the moment Wayne IS better then Wu Tang because none of them are selling well. Yes the albums are good but not good enough for people to WANT to listen and BUY their music. When determining a great album we have to think of the Impact it has and there is NO DOUBT WHATSOEVER that EVERY SINGLE EMINEM ALBUM HAS DONE THAT. EVERY SINGLE JAY-Z ALBUM HAS DONE THAT. Most Nas albums have done that (up until 2006 when he because a whiny ass hole of course)

    • asa

i just copied and pasted a post i know u didnt read but also soulja boy are u serious that should be a prime example of how quantity of sales do not equal quality for dumb shit like this i always like to quote the ingenious immortal tech "so if ya message aint shit fuck the record you sold cus if u go platnium it has nothing to do with [greatness nor] luck, just means a million ppl is stupid as fuck!"

    • asa

like i've stated b4 @emfan u need learn a lesson of quality always comes b4 quantity! 2nd of all i can give a fuck what corporations want to spend their money on because good music tends to come from independent labels. Major record labels arent inthe business of producing talent. They are in business of MAKING MONEY! so thy work side by side w/ radio/mtv/social medias to make you think that the record is hot when it is NOT, it is intricately and very well thought out hype because THERE'S 1 Thing PPL WHO SELL PRODUCTS KNOW IS, THAT YOU ARE ONE OF THE HERD AND YOU WILL DO JUST ABOUT ANYTHING NOT TO BE AN OUTCAST, EVEN IF IT MEANS BUYING CRAP MUSIC!!!!!!

    • STFU

Sales=quality lmmfao your a fuckin certified retard sales are a result of marketing NOT album quality fool only dellysionsl drones like you think otherwise when it's a FACT your wrong by your dumb as fuck reasoning souljah boys albums doper than the Roots or lil Wayne doper than Wu when neither can make albums even remotely as ill but keep believin that dumb shit we need you fools for amusement
