Details are still emerging, but it has been confirmed that Hip Hop pioneer Rammellzee has died. The Far Rockaway Queens, New York native is perhaps best known for 1982 Hip Hop single “Beat Bop” (made with K-Rob). The song features a cover art by late painter Jean-Michel Basquiat.

The song would go onto appear in seminal graffiti film Style Wars, gaining notoriety and becoming one of the most sought-after Rap records of the early ’80s, later re-released by the Profile label.

As a visual artist, Rammellzee’s work appeared in galleries domestically and abroad. His work has been self-described as “future gothic.”

The cause of Rammellzee’s death is unknown at present. In recent years, he had appeared in several documentaries, as well as making a 2003 rare musical performance alongside his Death Comet Crew at New York’s Knitting Factory.
