Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 6/13/2010

UPDATE: One digital retailer reported to Nielsen late, new numbers affect the charting for B.o.B., Travie McCoy & Distant Relatives.

Four of the Top 5 charting releases last week were debuts. More Glee and Twilight fanfare topped the charts, while Christina Aguilera's latest album, Bionic came in at #3. While the Pittsburgh Pop songstress worked with Gang Starr's DJ Premier and Kwamé on her 2006 album, this one features board work from Polow Da Don and Dr. Dre's Aftermath protege Focus... At #5 came Plies, with his fourth album in three years, Goon Affiliated. The 33 year-old Florida rapper's latest sold less than half first week units of what his 2008 album, Da REAList did. Goon Affiliated features Def Jam stars Young Jeezy and Fabolous, and production from popular deejay/radio personality, Clinton Sparks.

UPDATE: Nielsen announced late Friday afternoon that one of the digital retailers had not provided sales information on time. New charts were sent, affecting the rankings and overall approximations for B.o.B., Travie McCoy, Ratatat, Nas & Damian Marley and Kutt Calhoun. The old information is crossed out, new is in parentheses, and the chart tables have been updated.

Usher's Raymond v. Raymond fell out of the Top 10 to #12. The veteran Pop entertainer's "divorce album" is marching its way to a platinum plaque for Mr. Raymond and his longtime backer, LaFace Records. Just behind, The Black Eyed Peas and their nearly year-old E.N.D. were at #15, gaining two spots, and remain a potential consistent climber in this sales drought.

B.o.B. Presents The Adventures of Bobby Ray fell eight (five) spots to (#18). The Rebel Rock sensation inches to 250,000 units, making him the most successful Atlantic Records Rap release in over six months, including label vet Plies.

Travie McCoy (once known as "Travis") of Gym Class Heroes received a Top 30 debut. His album, taken from his middle name, Lazarus, was released through his own Fueled By Ramen imprint. The 12-track collection features two appearances by T-Pain, as well as DXnext alum Colin Munroe and Cee-Lo.

* Please note: figures below approximated to nearest thousandth.

Top 200 Album Sales (Top 5 Hip Hop/R&B)

Rank Artist Album This Week Est. Total
5 Plies Goon Affiliated
56,000 57,000
12 Usher Raymond v. Raymond
30,000 821,000
15 Black Eyed Peas The E.N.D. 21,000 2,590,000
18 B.o.B. Presents The Adventures of Bobby Ray 19,000 229,000
25 Travie McCoy Lazarus 15,000 15,000

Damian Marley & Nas' Distant Relatives fell 14 (13) spots to #32 (#31). The Universal Republic/Def Jam Records collaborative release has garnered huge critical acclaim in the Rap community for its rich commentary on the parallel relationship between Hip Hop and Reggae. Lil Wayne, K'Naan, Dennis Brown and Joss Stone appear on the work produced by Damian and brother Stephen.

Ludacris slid nine spots to #41 with Battle of the Sexes. Earlier this week, Def Jam confirmed the album had achieved a gold plaque, though the 500,000 mark is still well short domestically.

One of the week's bigger surprises came courtesy of Lil Jon's Crunk Rock. Now a label-mate with Distant Relatives at Universal Republic, the king of Crunk failed to crack the 10,000 units sold mark, barely cracking the Top 50. The album, nearly four years in the making, features Ice Cube, Game, Soulja Boy and Pitbull. The performance comes after a very long dispute Jon had with former label, TVT.

Having remixed tracks by Notorious B.I.G., Young Buck and Anti-Pop Consortium, Brooklyn duo Ratatat may be best known for Kid Cudi's "Pursuit of Happiness" appearance and production. The duo's aptly-titled fourth album, LP4. The XL Recordings release features no guests.

Lastly, Strange Music's Kutt Calhoun cracked the charts with his Raw and Un-Kut album. The Kansas City Rap veteran's third album features Too Short, Joe Budden and E-40, as well as label-mates Tech N9ne and Brotha Lynch Hung.

Rank Artist Album This Week Est. Total

  • Indiemuzik

Plies's label definetly bought atleast half of his albums in physical casette. On itunes he peaked at #10 for a few hours then immediately dropped down to #30. Nas and Damian Marley got about the same 1st week sales as Plies, but they were at #4 on itunes for a whole week.

  • YALL TOO SCARED FOR HIPHOP

The generation that says stuff like "Weird" is way too puzzy to keep rap alive. These kids grew up under the WAR ON TERROR. Everyone has to fit in or your an outsider. Oooh outsiders cause problems. They have no rebellion in them. They want to do whatever or suck off whom ever or kiss azz to get to the top. Its funny apple was the image of rebellion IN THE 80S, now it's the chosen brand of this cowardly generation. Everything on tv is popularity contests. AMERICAN IDOL, SURVIVOR, APPRENTICE, ETC. Voting off the unpopular. Fuck You, Im not popular. Thats how artists are made. Fuck You. I don't need your approval.

  • Derrickk

i dont think albums sales will never be the same cause albums get leaked and bit torrents etc . its too easy to get it for free thats why artist sales are not good to me . Distant Relatives album is hot i dont have no problems with the beats or reagae vibe its given. Nas is on it I'll copp it period

  • nastynas4life

wow...these numbers are...embarrassing! Who the hell is still buying that Black Eyed shit?! B.E.P's are waaaaay overrated. Plies, i don't know bout him but 95% of his fans are women. It's like what the fuck just happened, yesterday-back in the days- numbers were too high. Adults buying albums and albums going plat. Then today comes and albums can't even pass the 30-50k...that's ridiculous! Plus, i was reading a magazine yesterday, it said that 80-90% of people who listen to the radio today are females...I don't know what to say about that but most of Drake & wayne fans are pure females. Average age are 14-17...that's stupid. But whatever, i'm looking into next weeks sales..if their not high, then i don't know what to say...

  • bigmarv33

drake album is wack and plies album is garbage . he buys that shit ?

If feel wat most of yall are saying bout em and how the game is and shit..but i put money kanye do more numbers than anybody..music ALWAYS speaks for itself! his production alone is bananas. and yall know kanye that deal. em lyrically could be argued the best to ever do it. but jay is right there wit him. i dunno nigga faded!!!..lol

    • Magnum Opus

Hahahahahaha, a Drake fan calling out another nigga's taste in rap? If you listen to Drake, and aren't female, then you're under 18. No men listen to that faggot, so you need to pyp kid.

Distant Relatives isnt selling because people are afraid to listen to something uplifting. Rather listen to bafoonery. Wake up! the industry is destroying youth via bullshyt imagery. I guess ignorance is truely bliss. smh@ the future

    • digga

see what ya'll missing is that they meant the cd to be a super big seller.the cd was done so it can keep generating money for projects in africa.but i do agree that they need to release another single or two.as we enter was good but it's not the strongest song by a long shot

    • robb323

its not selling because there hasnt been any good singles released for it I they had released Count your blessings or My Generation as singles and marketed it better it would have done well

    • DONCANNON PEZZY

i feel you bro..but at the same time i havent listened to yet but im going to.

    • Drucifer1983

Get off the soap box and call it how it really is, Distant Relatives isnt selling because raggae isnt popular in america..........I personally love the record but not alot of people are into raggae and it definatly sounds more like Damian Marleys album then a Nas album...........Most Nas fans I've played it for arent intrested in it, just how it is *Kanye Shrug* Hey, at least I bought it(Through Itunes, better then Illegally, lol)

  • JordanM91

You wonder why hip hop sales is fucked up...cuz theres terrible hip hop artists. All these dudes - soulja boy, plies, oj da juiceman, wacka flocka, gucci mane...Yea, there gonna do decent numbers early in there career when there still buzzing strong. But album after album, there sales start to slowly decrease. These rappers are not here for the long run. There here for there 15 minutes and there money, thats all they care about. Which is sad, cuz there careers will only last a little more while. Then you got artists like Eminem (or even jay-z) who still put out quality music because of there passion for hip hop, (not for money), so thats why they have been able to last so long, and thats why there still selling mad numbers even today, at ages 37 and 40. Eminem has been in the game YEARS before most of these new comers, and hes still selling wayyy more than what they do. Hip hop sales is fucked up right now, but thats cuz theres a lot of wack music. If the shit is good, its gonna sell. Fuck excuses. I dont give a fuck if its a recession, I dont give a fuck if ppl are bootlegging and the internet is fucking up sales, if its good music, its gonna sell. Point blank. Numbers dont lie. And I know, a lot of good quality music doesnt sell (Distant Relatives, Revolutions Per Minute), but thats not really mainstream music, the radio would rather play garbage ass music. And im not gonna bring up B.E.P. because thats not even hip hop, so fuck what they sell. And I know, just because someone sells big numbers, doesnt mean its good music. Drake is gonna sell big numbers just from his hype alone. But 95% of hip hop is wack, so 95% of sales are pretty much gonna suck. Step ur game up, and niggas will most likely buy ur shit. Or keep doin the same fuckin thing, and niggas gonna get tired of ur ass in a couple years or 2 and then u wont be shit. But anyways, Im looking forward to see what Drake sells, and especially eminem. Really hope recovery does a mili in the first week, if it doesnt, then im gonna give up hope, because I honestly see that album as the last chance, but who knows. Still gonna sell big regardless, Eminem is gonna be pushing 100 mill total worldwide pretty soon, Recovery will eventually do 10 mill worldwide, hes gonna be real close. Shit, hes already the best selling artist (not just rapper) of the decade, but also the biggest selling RAPPER of all time (Past pac) and its most likely gonna stay that way, goin down as a legend whether u like it or not.

    • metal50

there will never be another album to sell a milli in one week ever!!! everyday that goes by more and more people are downloading albums.i myself turn people on to it weekly!! once someone discovers how to download they never buy again...thats just the way it is.....Em still has selling power no matter what he releases but if u pay attention every album that is released by an artist is lower than there last one...it will always be that way....

    • robb323

cosign hollier than you, em fucked up with relapse he isnt as popular as he used to be it wont do any more than 500k first week

    • Drucifer1983

Ems album will still outsell most of whats out there, and when T.I comes he should do well too, not to mention Kanye, although I dunno if white folks are gonna hold the taylor swift thing against him forever(Hope not, it really wasnt that big of a deal) Theres still some rounds left in the clip, Hip Hop aint out of Ammo just yet

    • Holier Than Thou

Don't mean to be pessimistic, but Recover isn't selling a million in a week. It will go Platinum but not selling a mill in a week. Hell Relapse had the hype of being Em's first albums in half a decade and it sold 600,000 with is no doubt great.

  • MusicFiend

Lil Jon did exactly what I figured. 4 years, man his fanbase was comprised mostly of teenagers (due to the "lyrical dexterity") and if you were 16 when he dropped his last disc you'd be hitting 20 now and probably outgrowing the music. (Tha blow, tha pills, tha yack, tha herb....repeat x 1000000.....remember that classic?) . I mean, it's cool to blast outta the whip when your a kid but if you Plies age and bumping that u have arrested development.... don't get me started on Plies material. Anyway, Shady's Recovery and Distant Relatives will be the most remembered albums of the year IMO unless Detox drops (not holding breath, and weren't we supposed to get an Aftermath Cognac too?)

  • DJJ

The legendary Roots crew is dropping on June 22nd. Eminem on June 21st. I can't wait, THE ROOTS are the greatest band ever. Black Thought is the best rapper.

    • Adam Scotland Boy

Agree with you there, although where im from i may be the only one who knows of them

    • BEEZ

There's definitely an argument for BT being the best! Although, he's in MY top 5, I can't quite put him on top... The Nas and Jr album is one of the best albums I have ever heard PERIOD regardless of genre! Man a bad man mi nah play Willy Wonka!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also I like cudi but I can't listen to a whole album that's just beats and no ones rippin on em. So sorry ratatat but I'll pass....

    • MusicFiend

Word, BEP still destroying most peeps 1st week sales, it's fucking crazy. I hate BEP's music but I gotta give them props on the longevity of the high sales numbers.

  • call_out

  • detroit ROCK CITY

i got some bad news em will do well but will fall way short drake will do double copper his first week he"s a movie star not a rapper face we let hip-hop die and we did not even put up a fight so sad

    • MusicFiend

not a fan but i think drake is gonna sell big....which is too bad cuz he looks like an ego the size of fat joe and i'd like to see him falter and bring him back down.....fucking smug looking is what it is. I think Recovery is easily gonna be one of the biggest selling hip hop albums of the year....if not the most.

  • Drucifer1983

    • JasonCTown

    • CANT....BAN......DUKE....... BOY

In hits....In quality of albums.....3 straight gold albums.......a underrated lyricists...... Plies is not a gangster he just rap about real shit like (blacks being locked up, snitching, fake niggas, urban struggle) people say Plies is a fake because of the word "goon" that he uses uncontrollably.......Not gonna lie when he first came out I thought he lived the life as a goon but since then he has explained why he call himself a goon.....Plies is "goon affiliated" not a goon.......... over the past 3 years I probably only listen to Wayne, Jeezy and 50 more than Plies.....His latest album is a disgrace to him, his fans, his family, hip hop and all who is involve..........I personally will give him a pass for this garbage album just like I did with Eminem, 50 and Jay
