Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 5/30/2010

Distant Relatives stay Top 10, while Reflection Eternal falls over 40 spots, as BEP hits 2.5 millie, and Cam'ron & The U.N. hit the charts with a mixtape.

After last week's surprising debuts for two of Rap's most anticipated collaborative projects, the dust settled a bit. Usher's Raymond v. Raymond advanced to #5 from a #7 position last week. The veteran Pop entertainer's "divorce album" is marching its way to a platinum plaque for Mr. Raymond and his longtime backer, LaFace Records.

Damian Marley & Nas' Distant Relatives maintained a Top 10 spot, but fell five spots to #9. The Universal Republic/Def Jam Records collaborative release has garnered huge critical acclaim in the Rap community for its rich commentary on the parallel relationship between Hip Hop and Reggae. Lil Wayne, K'Naan, Dennis Brown and Joss Stone appear on the work produced by Damian and brother Stephen.

B.o.B. Presents The Adventures of Bobby Ray fell just two notches to #15. The Rebel Rock sensation has the strongest commercial debut in Rap thus far in 2010, and will likely clear 200,000 units next week, as last year's Kid Cudi and Drake sit in the 300,000 and 400,000 units sold categories at present.

Will all the downward movement, The Black Eyed Peas and their nearly year-old E.N.D. release cleared the 2.5 million mark. The Interscope Records release remains a benchmark for its digital sales, and the label's success in this economic climate. Another 2009 release, Alicia Keys' Element of Freedom was included with the top five Rap/R&B sellers at #29. It was announced last week that the songstress and Swizz Beatz will be having their first child.

Ludacris adjusted to #32 with Battle of the Sexes. The DTP/Def Jam album remains the imprint's most successful 2010 album to date, and carries itself towards a gold plaque, possibly due by mid-summer.

Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek as Reflection Eternal's Revolutions Per Minute fell to #62 in its second week on shelves. With co-executive production by Sha Money XL, R.P.M. features appearances from Bun B, J. Cole, Mos Def and Jay Electronica, among an assortment of Pop/R&B appearances.

Trina's Pop-inspired album, Amazin'  cleared 50,000 units sold, as expected. The Diamond Princess' independent release boasts backing by EMI Records, similar to releases by Raekwon and Twista last year. Speaking of southern veterans, 8Ball & MJG bumped to #123 with Ten Toes Down. Distributed through E1 Entertainment, the Grand Hustle project is executive produced by T.I., and features an extensive guest-list of contemporaries and newer artists influenced by the Memphis mainstays.

The lone new release to the charts is Cam'ron & The U.N.'s Heat In Here Volume 1. The Warner Brothers/Asylum-backed project is very similar to Gucci Mane's The Burrrprint [2] HD release, which also charted. Cam's latest crew includes Vado and Byrd Lady, among others.

NICO: Nas has been in the game since 1993. the industry game anyway. the fact that he is still on a major and still selling in 2010 is a miracle in itself. most cats from his era are gone now. they aren't on majors, and aren't selling shit. The guys before him all disappeared too. nas is doing fine.

  • Inspirmentalist

this some ole bullshit. talib kweli and hi-tek should have definitely hit gold by now. and nas and damien marley should have hit gold as well. ain't no real hip-hop fans left out here. they rather buy that bullshit. i'm glad to see luda did well though.

Hello, there is a great dating and friends site --**Blackmilitaryfriends.com**-- to you. It's a cool site caters to all men and women in the military or retired from the military seeking love and friendship. There are many single members of the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, Police Force, and Firefighters -- as well as civilians, veterans. Me and my aireforce boyfriend also meet there 1 year ago. We are now happily married. Check it out, you are also destined to meet your Mr or Mrs Right or good friends there.

  • Twinblades

Not to be an asshole but intill June 15 there realy will be no album worth mentening on here. Most of the projects out right now know one give two shits about( except that B.o.B & usher) so once drake drops that's when the ball will start rolling and better sells will pick up. I mean think about drake--- Em--- Game---Cudi---- kanye---big boi and the list gose on. I say we should spilt up this year of hip hop in to two eras. Everything befor adventures of Bobby Ray meh everything after sweet.

    • James Lewis

B.O.B. is the best cd of the year and crazy nas and damian marley bangin plus drake cd is bullshit

    • open ears / open mind

cosign w/ JasonCTown I'll download Drake for free, but not spending money on that shit. I bought Reflection Eternal and it's on point. Talib can make his flow match almost any beat....it's sick.

    • JasonCTown

Eh, speak for yourself....Im certainly not checking for Drake, so I'll speak for me and a few others and say that Reflection Eternal makes Drake look like childs play....oh wait, it is.

  • HHFAN

Breath.Relax...none of you work for a record label. I hate the fact that people equate sales with success. It took Illmatic 10 years to go platinum. Reasonable Doubt barely went gold when it debuted but those are two of the best hip hop albums of all time. Distant Relatives is one of the best albums I've heard in years. Front to back, it's worth every cent of your money.

    • JayLexus

Distant Relatives is the best album since Below The Heavens and the first 5/5 album in 4 years.

    • BEEZ

It's worth a lot more than the $10 I paid! That album is one of the best albums I have ever heard, and I'm a music aficionado; not just hip hop but various genres. This will go down as a timeless classic. It will garner more and more praise and attention as time goes on, and will continue to sell for years. I say fuck sales too, but in this case, it's almost an emotional thing, this album needs to be heard by the whole world so I want to see it sell baby sell

  • Mr.Crackee

i copped RPM and distant relatives. worth the 23 bucks.might get another copy of DR ta put in storage. Distant Relatives in Gerogia June 12th

  • Nico 3

Record sales for Nas are "distant". Aside from 50, can you name another mainstream rapper who has fallen off this bad? Nas used to sell a million everytime. Now he makes albums that aren't what any teenager wants in their IPOD, or coming out the speakers in their car.

    • Wes B

Nas isnt making albums for teenagers

    • JasonCTown

Most teenagers these days dont have the mental capacity or patience to listen to Nas. They may hear it, but they dont listen. Unfortunately, this ADD-riddled society of ours has that 'on to the next one' mentality when it comes to any music and our society is inundated with WAY to many celebs and 'artists'....most of which shouldnt see the light of day.

  • nastynas4life

wow...this makes me think, why do you people download Real hip-hop albums then buying it? Real Hip-hop is being illegally downloading on the web than being bought at stores..while pure pop & R&B garbage like usher is having over 700k sales?! NO MAMES!!!

  • DJJ

The NaS & Damian Marley and the Reflection Eternal albums are worth buying. They are really well thought out albums and you need to hear them!

Well all i know is that I am a great recording artist...im sorry taylor swift...and what ever happen to 50 B.I.S.D album...did it go plat..or even gold..what about my last album 808's and heartbreak...Um 2x Plat! NIGGS

  • DJ_Howie

This whole downloading thing can go two ways. Yes it is good to support the artist and buy the albums, which is why they make them, to make a living and to motivate them to continue making music...but then you got rappers that put out albums that aren't worth buying!! That's where I download them "cough" Battle of the Sexes "cough". That album I downloaded to listen and I would buy it if it was good, like all my CD's...and it aint worth being bought, not the same Luda. Distant Relatives I bought off of iTunes right when it came out, amazing album. So it can go two...well three ways. The artist aren't benifiting us by making CD's, so why should we buy?

  • TheTruth.Zbx

    Lil Wayne = God

  • progression in music

Record sells is not where the money is anyway...NAS and DAMIAN are selling out tours in every city and state! The fact that Nas could put out an album like Distant Relatives is a BLESSING...the industry knows that Nas is GREAT and no other artist could have gotten this album out on a major! Big up to Nas a Damian...I will tell everyone I know to cop this album 3x over!

  • drm1

not surprised distant relatives hasnt even gone gold, i bet theres hundreds of thousands with it on their comp...illegally. you "fans" will be the death of all these artists careers.

    • GoogleBerry

i actually care. if u look at places without intellectual property laws that are enforced (china, korea, etc...) they have zero creativity. Those countries copy everything from the west. but if the west can't afford to be creative it will collapse. short sightedness. at the same time a lot of these simpletons buy value meals everyday and then can't see why they can no longer get jobs at record labels and instead have to work fast food. you support music, it creates jobs in music. you support corporate crap, you work for corporate crap. how many of you fools have paid multiple overdraft and overlimit fees to bank of america, chase, of wells fargo. that's 3 cds each and you give the power to the banks who credit check you into a corner. pay for movies, music, books, mags, newspapers and you can work there too. i'm not saying buy the garbage releases, be selective, why would u download garbage to your computer even if it is free? if it's dope, cop it. if it's wack, dont touch it.

    • who who

who gives a fuck. they dont give a fuck about you. i got the album from limewire. it's ok

  • PAPA GUNZ AKA MR FUCK HIP HOP

Everybody so worried about who selling but nobody at the music store helping the problem... shut up bloggers and choke on some dick... and to those buying albums still keep the culture alive peace and god bless

  • Twinblades

Handy let me break it down for you just a lil bit. Lil Wayne has talent but as of right now he realy hasn't been makeing much sence on any of the songs he's been featured on. That being said you seem to get the idea that lil Wayne is a success because he went gold with the rebirth album. Nigga that album was a failure! While there were a few good songs on there as a whole body of work it was shit! If you wanna talk cross genre success look at kanye. He did 808s an album that EVERYONE thought was gonna suck and wouldn't sell..... The nigga went doubled plat. And I know you'll say he only sold that much cuz he had that song with wezzy. But let me ask you something handy. Why did kanye sell more with a wezzy colab but wezzy can't sell as much by himself? Awanser: cuz the album was trash and everyone knew! There was no getting around it it sucked and there's no excuse that you could say that would prove why he didn't sell more. It's sad that you claim Wayne is the greatest but you realy don't pay any mind to the artist that out sell this nigga. And besides wezzy should have never done rock that was prob his syzzurp talking to him. If you want rap/rock then listen to B.o.B at least he knows how to make that shit sound good. It won't be long intill the day B.o.B outsells Wayne. Now time to wait for that new kanye single so I can here my fav double plat cross genre rapper do what he's dose best with fag Wayne.... Make good music:)

  • F-one

I'm glad Distant Relatives is still moving units, although that doesn't matter now-s-days. And I'm part of the 83k. On another note, someone should put "Handyyyyyy..." out of his misery

  • E.S.S. Hip Hop

I guess it's safe to say, that all the fags that only talk record sales...also buy Taylor Swift albums n shit.

  • The BiGG Pat

The truth is unless they're from Jay-Z, Lil Wayne or Eminem, rap albums don't sell anymore... it's Sad but true, Hip Hop is slowly dyin'

    • The BiGG Pat

If U carefully reread the sentence i wrote you'll notice that i'am not sayin' that wayne sold as much as Em or Jay, i'am just sayin' that these three rap artists are the rare ones can have a platinum plaque TODAY if they drop an album... And yes rappers need to step it up and make more classic albums

    • MYLIE

don't put Lil Wayne in the same lane as Eminem and Jay-Z he hasn't sold as much as them.

    • ron thetruthmaster

Hip hop isnt dying...people are just wising up and not buying shitty albums anymore. Hip hop artists just need to step it up and get back to making classic albums.

  • ogewt

music is in a bad state where u only have to sell 25k to get into the top 10

  • handdddyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

nas i've advised u to stay on ur pop shit and not try another genere...who the fuck u think ur?lil wayne!?hell no... no1 could change his genere and sell like lil wayne,he sold 3 mill of that C3 and he make all rights for himself to try another genere and he sold well.. well not as much as his gangsta shit anyway he's still a gangsta he's not a rock star but still went gold... that's what i call a smart gangsta, lil wayne! could spit same verse of that nas&D album on the same beats and sell more u know why?cuz he's a gangsta and gangstas all around the world respect him... gangstas don't download shit they ain't got time for it they probably hustle that 10-20 bucks from a gay nas fan on the day of weezy! release and going straight to the shop to cop it... let me give u a review about lil wayne! carrer on more time(which's dead btw just trying to bring back memories): 1-he was rapping some nice rhymes on that illmatic shit 2-he went to RnB and sing many songs including (bridging the gap) 3-all of sudden he decided that hiphop was dead and started some pop shit with that (hero) shit and others with bitchz. 4-after he failed he had no choice to go beyond borders and started that reggae shit with damian which also failed... common between these facts is 1 thing...it's failure and being flunkie... nas is a straight sellout his last works confirmed that his hiphop dead not general hiphop dead...he went from 300k of pop music to probably 180k of reggae.... lil wayne! is da greatest of all da time fuck haters

    • bigtam

hahah! you think that the people who buy waynes albums are gangstas? are you serious? you are a fucking moron, wayne's fanbase is fucking confused high school kids you piece of shit. ganstas? really?

    • Adamsfam

Yeah lil wayne is the greatest at kissing men..........letting gillie tha kid write 4 him..........tryin 2 be like Pac........1 of the worst lyricist ever.........singing like a broad and jockin T-PAIN..........LETTING BABY DICK HIM ON ROYALTIES.........BEING UGLY AS FUK..........HAVING A SHIT LOAD OF KIDS........AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST HAVING YOU AS A WACK ASS DICK RIDING CLOWN!

    • Twinblades

      Fuck wezzy up with jezzy

    • E.S.S. Hip Hop

Distant relatives is fuckin dope! They need to do more albums together. By the way 83,000 copies sold in just a few weeks, is good for a REAL Hip Hop record nowadays.

    • DJ Neme$1$

lil wayne spit trash till the carter 1 (3 or more albums includin hotboys WACK) then he found a ghostwriter by the name of gillie the kid an made carter 1,then little dickriders that dont know shit about hip-hop started buyin into this whole "greatest rapper alive" bullshit (like nas is dead pft) an blew up the most homo soundin rapper ever to hit this planet, seriously,HOMO, doin gay shit like laughin in between rhymes an doin this constipated sound like uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh with some autotune on it,which was the worst mistake us as people have let happen, cuz now were stuck with jits that think illmatic jus "had some good rhymes" LMAO forgettin that nas did it was written after then i am then nastradamus, then stillmatic, then gods son, then streets desciple, then hip-hop is dead, then nigger, which were all successful either critically or commercially,no matter what u say kid,ur favorite rappers favorite rapper is nas,so dont go thinkin u know shit,id rather hear nas on reggae then lil wayne doin gay rock anyday...lil wayne get murdered on every feature like steady mobbin an women lie men lie...btw vanilla ice an mc hammer sold more then lil wayne an them boys is trash so dont think sales mean anything...plus labels buy off alotta albums to make it seem like they hot...

    • INOA

      You's a bitch ass homo

My question is, why do bloggers/fans claim the record sales of artists??? As if they are seeing any of that money.....handyyyyy sure aint seein' any of Waynes cash, so why does it matter???

    • DJ Neme$1$

their you go again thinkin record sales is sumtin....i bet more real niggas go to a method man concert then any wayne concert u go to....btw noone sellin right now,not even waynes gay ass rock album....maybe u shud go dickride some black eyed peas or sumthin since ur in love wit sales an not music....

    • handdddyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

add ice cube to the list+all wu niggaz... before going crazy on me i suggest u obseve record sales...

  • shabaz

I totally agree with u 100% cos most of this albums are downloaded illegally...period!

  • really?

good job Usher an B.o.B lookin good. o and the answer to your last three questions about Yukmouth, Kokane, and Sandman(???) is fuck no. ill be surprised if any of them crack the top 120. what kind of question is that. who actually is goin to go out and buy any of those...Thank Me Later, Recovery, TM103, R.E.D., Teflon Don, Live From the Kitchen (Yo Gotti), juveniles new album, Goon Affiliated are the ones you should actually look out for.

    • yung magic

i kinda agree witchu on that. but, i wldnt be suprised if Rick Ross, Yo Gotti, and Juvenile's album don't sell that much. The rappers are talented but they follow a different style than wat the fans are lookin for. Most hip-hop followers look for trash music these days or wat they here on the radio. That's all to it

  • kocaine

camron 3k ???? hes suposed to be hot rite now since he is on llyd banks bemer beans record?? so sad...

  • HRCMS

I was hoping Distant Relatives posted higher numbers to show that good hip-hop and great concepts still sell.

  • ICYU

Where is Monica album sales. I swear its like ppl still doubting our girl. Well atlease she performing at the BET Awards '10. YAYYY!!!! Still Standing in stores now. "Love All Over Me" second single....LET GOOOOOO!!!!!

  • MACCAPONE

DAMN THIS SALES ARE VERY VERY LOW CUZZ WEST COAST SLAUSON BOYZ

    • yung magic

No don't blame it on the west coast. Blame the rappers in general for wat they make. Music (hip-hop) isn't the same no more. Rappers follow up styles they here from other rappers and then that's just them from that album now on. That's why u see most rappers don't do well on the Top 100 singles

  • Drucifer1983

Sad numbers, especially Nas and Damien marley......2 weeks of release and not even a double digit sales figure yet???

    • shabaz

Hey easy folks Drucifer missed it, bt from his entire statement he meant double of what they initially sold first week, or 6digits at least.. 'YET'

    • Davon

Did anybody buy the album instead of downloading it? Guess I'm the only one.

    • JasonCTown

@JUKKS... Ease up bro. Drucifer actually knows his shit, but clearly missed on this one.....for whatever reason. Im sure he would agree that D.R. is a nice piece too.

especially sad is your lack of awareness of what a double digit figure is. you uneducated, disgusting, waste of a body of a human being. you are the epitome of a retard and what is wrong with the world today. you disgust me something terrible. double digits, double digits???!!! triple digits or surely 6 figure digits is the right term to be used. but double??? what kind of a ridiculously stupid statement is that. you sick human being. didn't you go to school? were you raised by wolves? surely due to you access to a computer and navigation to this website you must have some sort of knowledge.... but your lack of sense, education and general knowledge of range of figures say otherwise. perhaps you should go take a good look in the mirror, and then go back through your old school workings and see where you went wrong. this is a glaring mistake. we all make minor mistakes and sometimes make typos (for instance, i've failed to capitalize some of the letters i should have in this comment). but your mistake is not down to a typo, it's clearly down to a lack of knowledge, and perhaps you should go to your crackhead whore of a mother, and alcoholic father and ell them that they clearly didn't bring you up properly after you exhibited such a horrible knowledge of the english language and math. p.s. distant relatives kicks ass!!

the fuck you talking about, sounds like your ass thinks they sold >10 copies

EVERYONE needs to go out and get REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE and DISTANT RELATIVES!!! its REAL music, REAL hiphop....its a damn shame that garbage like trina's album is selling more than a classic album such as revolutions per minute smh

    • DaGreenEyedBandit

Copped both of them... Distant Relatives has become one of my favorite albums of all time!!! RPM is a very good album, but could've been without 2 songs in my opinion (Songs feat: Estelle & Chester French).

Both were great in my opinion. The Nas and Damien disc took me 3 spins to really get what they were doing.....I guess I had a pre-conceived notion of what I thought it may sound like. Sonically, it's top notch and both Nas and DMarley tear through the whole album. Revolutions per Minute....it hasnt stopped spinning since I bought it. Takes a few tracks to really get going, but when it does, it's beautiful. Go get that Janelle Monae too. It may not be everyones cup o' tee, but that album is remarkable for both pushing its construction and it is going to shatter what artists think about R&B.

man that ball & MJG album is super wack the real test will come when big boi album drops

    • ImFromDaSouth 239/404

Yeah it was disappointing.. THought they was gone be on something messn w TIP.. Big Boi should come thru though..

  • biggrease187

Why should we even care about record sales? We need to move away from the conversation. NO ONE is selling records anymore. How about instead of weekly record sales Hip Hop DX focuses on weekly albums worth buying.

    • FlipSide

That's true but hopefully highlighting the lack of sales will serve as a wake up call to folks that if we don't start supporting these albums the record labels are going to start shelving them

i totally agree with u 100%, most of this albums are downloaded illegally...period!
