Wale Makes Amends, Performs At D.C. Black Pride For Free

The Washington, D.C. rapper clears up the situation that got him in hot water last week.

Last week DX reported that Wale’s management had cancelled a performance for the D.C. Black Pride Legacy Festival, a gay pride event held at the Washington Convention Center, to which organizers felt was a direct slight toward the gay and lesbian community. However, come Sunday the D.C. rapper was on stage to perform for event attendees at no cost to the organizers.

Clearing up the situation, Wale told the crowd, ''One thing I stand for is Hip Hop music. And Hip Hop music knows no race, no color, no age, no gender, no sexual orientation -- none of that. So, the most important thing about it is the music, and if it makes the people feel happy, that's what we hear.”

He continued, “I will say, sometimes in this business you get aligned with people that don't understand that, or don't necessarily have the same beliefs that you do. And I apologize for not having my best foot forward to understand the people I'm in business with. And I'm going to do better, as we all do.”

I am from DC and Black Pride is not just an event for gays and lesbians nor is it an event for them to go and show people how gay they are. The families of gays and lesbians go to these events with them as well to show support for their loved one and to show them that they except them for who they are. So, Wale was performing for some of his straight fans too. Plus lesbians and gay men do listen to rap music and may know more about hip hop than some of you on this site. He's from the DMV and he's a rapper so I know he probably knows some Lesbians of bisexual women. Just because he performed there does not mean he is gay either. C'mon people some of you on here are not being realistic. Also gay, lesbian and transgender people may not go through what the slaves went through nor is it the same but their are a few JUST A FEW similarities. Lesbians have been raped and beaten. Gay men have been killed just because they where minding their own business walking down the street an some straight man who is not secure with his own sexuality shoots and kills him. No one gay or straight should be treated like that. Some young people are killing themselves cuz there own family wants nothing to do with them because of their sexuality. If a strong black straight man or so called thug can except his gay brother and show him love and respect why can't others do the same. I do know some and if you mess with their brother you better watch your back when you walk down the street. What Wale did shows he is confident and has respect for his fans. For someone to say they don't want to support his music anymore cuz he did the show is crazy.

@SICOYALL Yeah look at some old Tupac videos and looks and sounds hella gay when he was in high school. Check 'em out on youtube. And the biggest shouters against gay people are usually usually suspect gay people. And who say's he ain't speakin his mind. He stating that his management made the mistake not him. So he sounds like a mature grown ass man to me setting the record correct. If hip-hop is real... then it has room form for everyone including ignat niggaz like u. Only dumb azz mofos think its only for them or a certain group or orientation.

  • Droopy Drake

drake wouldve been perfect for this event

  • realreal

All the homophobia y'all are spewing is hilarious... it makes you look like an ignorant bastard. $5 says you would never say that stuff to a gay person's face... especially if they were in your family, which I GUARANTEE they are. Get over it and stop worrying what someone does in their bedroom. And to all the homophobic artists, I guess you'll have to fire all the stylists, choreographers and songwriters you work with who are gay and make you hot right? I thought Hip-Hop put this mess behind them when Eminem performed with Elton. SMDH!

    • superhova

ROFL @ ICU UCME. How about that song Lollipop by you know who..

HIP HOP IS NOT FOR FAGGOTS--- Niggas rap about guns, women, drugs, money, clothes, murder, politics, racism, cars, their mama, their baby mama, their kids, etc, etc, etc. Not one(1), and mean 1(one), rapper in hip hop is talking about how he got fuck in the ass, or how nice another man looks in his suit. Let the gays have their day, but they surely don't have a spot in this genre. And if they do, seriously yo, I'm done with it.

    • lil boosie boo

nikka aint nobody scared of no fags....lmao who wont say it to a fags face....n i guess wale is gay for performing at a gay pride concert......,,,,,,.....boosie da goat

good move Wale. Hip-Hop should not promote bigotry it makes all look ignorant. HIP-HOP does not stand for HOMOPHOBIA. and Wale if u reading this believe...just know real fans won't abandon you because of a move like this...only the niggas that never supported u and never will.

  • DO NOT COMPARE

@ confuseddone Africans may of participated in the slave trade but White/Europeans were the ones whipping, oppressing, getting rich of slavery for hundreds of years. Do not compare involvement to oppression

    • negro please

africans were enslaving and killing each other LOOOONG before the white man came and stole us away to america.. check your fuckin facts

  • RWord

Wale, I lost a bit of respect for you because the sad fact that homos try to relate any malice treatment against their sexual behavior to 400+ years of slavery, raping of black woman and mother, separation of family, human torture, and jim crow is insulting to ALL black people in America. And for you to support that by performing at their convention is sad. Yes, hip-hop has no bias, but by you performing for free send the wrong message.

    • hhhh

1st off, not every gay person feels that way.... 2nd discrimination and hatred are wrong PERIOD. sure gays didn't have to go through nothing like what blacks have gone through. no one should have to go through that. but because there hardships aren't as severe doesn't mean they shouldn't fight for their rights...

  • YouAreSleeping

Much respect to Wale, we are all one race, the human race. We all breath, we all bleed. Nothing else matters

  • IMAKILLMESUMN

NIGGA STOP CALLIN THAT SHIT BLACK PRIDE. DONT EVER COMPARE THE BLACK MANS STRUGGLE TO THOSE OF FUCKIN FAGGOTS.

  • Twinblades

I'm in no way a supporter of homosexuality but what wale is doing is not a bad thing. yes hip hop is anti gay the unwritten rule of this genre but if we as a people stay this closed minded then were only digging or selves in a ditch we'll never get out of. Now I'm not saying rappers should support gays (cuz god knows if I was I wouldn't) but if you are you should state your belifes befor you go on that stage or appear on that show. cuz people will get it twisted and next thing you know everyone thinks you a fag.

  • itsMeDude

I have a question,,would Drake perform at this? NO Lil Wayne? NO..the thing about artist now a days is that they are scared of the public as a whole more than as individual groups..they do what everyone else likes aside from what they would do if they were just average joe's,.wale is one of the few out there that does what pleases him because he knows that allllllllll his fans are his fans because they are like him, similar in thoughts and lifestyle..I'm sure drug dealers, and murderers dont listen to wale..they're on there lil wayne stuff..and little 18 yr old girls listen to drake..and wale well he puts out music for the individual not the group..so i respect him and always will.

  • Ronnie Guess?

If its ok to have a black pride event is it ok to have a white pride event too?? and actually lable it white pride?? or something along those lines?? im just wondering why are there always events and t.v stations and radio shows that are labled as ''Black''!!!! there is BET. there is the cable channel ''stars in black'' and others.. whats the point?? and what would black people think if white people had a white pride walk?? or a white pride event or a white pride fest. or a white pride headline??? maybe the reason is that black people feel like they need to put the word black in front of something so that they can call it their own?? maybe they are so proud of being black that they need to have these things to show the world they are here and proud?? maybe white people dont have events with white pride as the headline because it would be taken as racist and attract kkk members and them skin head red neck hicks who always look dirty and for some reason always have a beer in their hands!!! hahaha.. maybe white people dont need a headline to feel good about who they are.. maybe black people wanna feel important and stand out!!! i just dont think we should put a lable on things anymore and we should just have an ''event'' with no color!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! p.s now watch the hate mail i get from this because people are so closed minded!!!

    • confuseddone

hey yo dnisus why didnt u put anything about the africans that traded their own for cases of rum. shit blacks treated other blacks like animals too thats some racist shit to pick wat u want out of the slave trade and try to rub that shit in ppls faces. Also, u create racism by creating these lines of segregation u create "black" events u urself are separating urself from the people around instead of joining different groups together

    • DNISUS

@Ronnie and Flintown810 To get straight to the point. The effects of slavery in this country are still prevalent to black people. Not all of them, but a good majority. Out of our own genius we continue to bring forth positive images of evolution, mostly in business. So if you see a station with black in the front of it, it's to remind the millions of black people that just because we were treated like animals, we aren't. And, it's to remind all the white people that your ancestors treated humans with dark skin like animals. Until you are able to forgive yourself, not feel guilty about it, and put more SERIOUS effort into ridding this country with the stench of african genocide, you will witness it. To put it more clearly, until WHITE people start to put more effort into taking up for BLACK people when done wrong by any race. You will continue to see Black people identify it's accomplishments with the word black. (To be fair, out of all of the accomplishments black people have had since the 60's most don't bare the title black. So what gives?) 3 points. 1.You will continue to see Black and Brown Pride, because not too long ago, those people who happen to be white, despise any race but themselves. Those men are old, but still in power. That horrid belief has been taught to their sons, and they teach it to their sons. They are still around. Find them and ask them why, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Fight for the beliefs you say you have. 2. Africans were brought to this country to be slaves, we aren't slaves anymore. BUT, basically my ancestors help build this country. We were and are the cultural backbone of this country. We can put black in front of whatever the fuck we want. It would be great if white people can acknowledge and celebrate it WITH us.. 3. Get your passport and get out of the country. It's a reason why we are the greatest country of our time. Be PROUD to be american. (if you have been out the country, go again, go further, and stay longer, it hasn't sunk in yet) Peace

    • FlinTown810

I feel the same way. This is what there gonna say "The white people have every other channel on tv," Bullshit!!

  • icu ucme

If a nigga is not gay, why then would a nigga preform at a GAY PRIDE FESTIVAL. It's gay pride, not "I respect all people". They would just be lost fans. PERIOD!

    • RuffDraft

To The Poet: You sound dumb ass hell. Studies say nearly 10% of the United states population is gay or have commited a sexual act with the same sex. Basically if you name your top ten favorite rappers there is a high probability that one of them is flaming and if he is one of your top ten fav rappers he is in fact "poppin in hip hop"

    • the poet

cosign....one thing about hiphop thats sad but true is there is a strict no homo policy....cant no gay niggas get it poppin in hiphop....real talk...im no homophobe but they be likin rappers for a different kinda gayer reason....& i dont even say that to be funny im being honest

  • BOO_DRO

Fuck that. I wouldnt do a concert for gay supports. I dont care what people would think of me.

    • MeDaTruth

@FACEMOBB That's why you will always be LOCAL...Wale is a recording artist that has fans worldwide in countries where the quality and content of music matters...not who you fukkin...too many American rappers can't survive outside they block cause they too narrow minded about simple shit. Wale did right and I am still a fan. Rappers who can only talk about drug sales, guns, baby mamas, money, jewelry, and going to jail so they can smell thousands of niggaz asses and feet everyday (which is really gay), is done and over.

    • Facemobb

Tru...Im a local artist out of DC..and I aint performing @ no Gay Pride..Fuck dat! Birds of a Feather Flock together...Guilty by association and all dat shit.

  • LUV2LAF2010

i like this , and it is really amazing ! I love black men. I have dated only black men for many years. I love the energy and a nice tight bod. white men just aren't the same, different mentality. I seem to have more in common with black guys. They're actually more fun and are usually more interested in me. I'm flattered. I meet black men on this website: DATE singles NEAR BY ~BlackwhiteKissing.com ~
