Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 5/23/2010

Nas and Damian Marley aren't able to score a #1 debut, but where do they fall? Reflection Eternal gets a Top 20 debut, as does Janelle Monae.

Hopeful for a #1 debut, Damian Marley & Nas' Distant Relatives project began its run on the charts at #4. The Universal Republic/Def Jam Records collaborative release fell behind The Black Keys, Justin Bieber and a new addition of Glee music. The Africa-inspired project did clear 50,000 units, with its rich commentary on the parallel relationship between Hip Hop and Reggae. Lil Wayne, K'Naan, Dennis Brown and Joss Stone appear on the work produced by Damian and brother Stephen.

The other major debut was the anticipated reunion album of Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek as Reflection Eternal. A decade after their acclaimed and commercially successful Rawkus Records debut, Train of Thought, Revolutions Per Minute has been met with a new dose of rave reviews, as the duo finds themselves on Warner Brothers/Asylum Records. With co-executive production by Sha Money XL, R.P.M. features appearances from Bun B, J. Cole, Mos Def and Jay Electronica, among an assortment of Pop/R&B appearances. The album debuted at #17, moving over 20,000 first-week units.

As usual of late, Usher's Raymond v. Raymond maintained its #7 place. B.o.B. Presents The Adventures of Bobby Ray also held at #13, as the Rebel Rock sensation has the strongest commercial debut in Rap thus far in 2010. Another genre-bending Georgia talent, DXnext alum, Janelle Monae's sophomore album, The Archandroid debuted at #16. With strong cosigns from both Big Boi and Diddy, the Bad Boy/Atlantic Records starlet furthers her ascent to the mainstream.

Ludacris fell to #30 with Battle of the Sexes. The DTP/Def Jam album remains the imprint's most successful 2010 album to date, and carries itself towards a gold plaque, possibly due by mid-summer. Trina's Pop-inspired album, Amazin'  sits on the cusp of 50,000 units sold. The Diamond Princess' independent release boasts backing by EMI Records, similar to releases by Raekwon and Twista last year.

Another Warner Rap release, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's Uni5: The World's Enemy slipped to #82. The radio-friendly album features a reunited cast of Bone brothers, who have shot an assortment of videos to support the DJ U-Neek-produced effort.
Once kin to the same Ruthless Records family that spawned Bone Thugs, 8Ball & MJG remained in the Top 100 with Ten Toes Down. Distributed through E1 Entertainment, the Grand Hustle project is executive produced by T.I., and features an extensive guest-list of contemporaries and newer artists influenced by the Memphis mainstays.

Another comeback act, Cypress Hill, may be bidding the Top 200 farewell, with their Rise Up. The Priority Records release features production by Pete Rock and Alchemist, as well as high-profile appearances from Tom Morello and Pitbull. The reunion of B-Real, Sen Dog and DJ Muggs has yet to pass the 40,000 mark, though it remains close.

i've been watchin the decline for a couple of years now and the problem is "albums." Rappers don't make good albums anymore. they focus so hard on a hit single that when it comes time to put the album out that single is the only thing worth buying, which is why singles still sell good. when i was a kid i was a cypress fan ,but now their music just sucks. it doesn't inspire, it's nothing new or something they haven't done before. same wit Snoop Dogg, who is in my top 5, his last two albums were complete garbage. they expect us rap fans to go to the stores and buy whatever they put out. then call us out when we don't support their garbage. we're in the process of rebuildin rap. we're just gettin past the age of ringtone songs and souja boy. which almost destroyed rap. cause niggaz was just makin catchy hooks to make a quick buck til the people stopped buyin it and the majors finally realized ringtone rappers can't sell albums. now we're gettin back to havin to really know how to rap to get on. you can see this by the new rappers coming out like drake, donnis, big sean, pill, laws, wiz, freddie gibbs, the cool kids and many more. once these new rappers come out and put out quality albums it will restore the confidence in rap fans to go out and buy albums again because it will feel like they're gettin their moneys worth and not buyin an album that has only one or two jammin songs.

  • HHFAN

F*ck sales. The big question is: "Are you enjoying the music?"

  • woodstock1530

The music industry is far from dead. You have to look at single sales, ringtones, digital sales and live shows. BoB's single sold far more than his album, Luda's single "How low can u go" sold over a million units. Now when it comes to album sales rap is selling the lowest compared to other forms of music b/c the albums are trash and the market is over saturated with garbage rappers.

  • Drucifer1983

Damn, B.O.B aint even at 200K with Nothin on You and Airplanes all over the fuckin radio??? I think I posted this earlier, but I never thought I'd see the day when Nas delivered numbers that pathetic Luda aint even gold yet with 3 singles out, Ludas been guaranteed money for about 10 years?? Bone thugs, man, I aint even gonna comment on that disaster The music buisness is all but dead, shits on a respirator, Breathing thru a machine.........

    • the poet

its the industry homie it aint the music....b.o.b luda & bonethugs had quallity albums...and nas hadnt sold well since hiphop is dead....which says it all in that title...we just gotta support and go to concerts

damian marley looks like a fuckin bum, the fuck he doesnt shave his fuckin neck

  • RocJay

The music business is scary and getting scarier. I am sure he is selling a gang load of digital singles, but B.o.B has two huge hits on the radio right now and has only managed to sell 170,000 units total. What is going on?!? Nas is still the greatest, but he is slowly making himself irrelevant to all but his die hard supporters. He thought he was too big a few years ago and was turning away from people like AZ who he should have kept working with. His sales have been hurting and this does not help. Distant Relatives does get his name out there and if he his smart, there will be a Nas single in a couple months and an album in the next five.

I never thought I'd see the day when a Nas album wouldnt break a 6 figure First Week Oh well, I bought one so my conscience is clear, but you really gotta like raggae to dig it, I think thats why Everybody(Outside of the internet) is passing on it, Its definatly more geared towards Jr. Gongs sound then Nas.... All Rappers are gonna need sidework sooner then later, Reflection eternal under 25K?? SMDH When I was young I always wanted to be in the music buisness, thank God It didnt happen, at least I know what pay is gonna be every week......... Only way these dudes can be making anything is to be Touring all the time, and who wanna do that in their 30's, unless you have no family......

  • Realist Talk

I feel like Distant Relatives sold exactly what it was supposed to. You can't get away with TWO "concept" albums in a row. NaS is WAAAAAAAY overdo for that album that the masses can enjoy. He is overdo for a good BANGER! The broads use to love NaS but now what is he doing for them? What exactly is NaS's appeal? He has the potential to run the game. But he chooses not to. Thats fine but he isnt giving me what I want as a fan. he isnt giving me what I fell in love with... iLL lyrics over hardcore/soulful beats. SMH

    • gangstarrrrrrr

never heard of pink floyd? i no it not rap but the "concept" argument is bullshit, some of the best albums are concept. What to the broads think? who gives a fuck, go listen to soulja boi, this is real music. To run the game you need to sell your soul, i couldnt care if the masses dont listen to nas, the world is full of retatards that would never get his music because its to clever. everything you have written is infuriating, yeah his beat selection is not great but his lyrics on nigger were different level. Hes creating music which he feels is right for him and his artistic progression if you dont get that you dont get nas. If i want somone to churn out the same album with the same concepts all the time I will listen to Jay Z post black album.

    • dakota

Understand Nas is doing him, the man doesn't want to run the game he been there done that and don't need the accolades, dude has got money, has success andis content where he is at....alot of people want him to be what they want but he's happy where he' at making music for himself that he likes. He keeps saying it over and over, that's a true artist right there who makes the kinda music they want. Please believe me, ask yourself 10yrs from now all the songs on the radio or whatever vs. Nas WHO'S MUSIC WILL LAST AND BE RELEVANT 10 PLUS YRS FROM NOW.....look at illmatic you can still bump that. The man is so conscience and aware of the word around him....understand that man, hopefully everyone can see beyond the music and get the message, the big picture....Bob Marley was not a commercial cat but he music stood past time and is still popping he did grown man music!

    • mr felon

      definitely agree...........

    • ...

so you only want him to do stuff that has mass appeal? smh

  • digga

the reason why nas didn't get number one is that damn glee shit.that shit is fucking karaoke done by actors.america bought a album full of actors singing pop hits.americans are fucking stupid..anyway i think that's bullshit people don't check or diss an album cuz it didn't get number one the first week.so fucking what.all that matters is if the music was excellent and is a CONSTANT seller like black eyed peas.tell me,is people gonna be buying glee CD's for long? no,that shit is a fad and a gimmick for a fucking tv show (and a bad one at that) and first of,the labels didn't even promote this right. a lot of people didn't even know the album was out.they can promote something negative and wack like crazy but when something brilliant and artistic comes out, they leave the artist dry.anyway he didn't intend it as a big seller.he did it for the kids in africa could have schools to learn in.

  • MusicFiend

Battle of the sexes was a pretty weak album for Luda, (though a couple were ok and drunk as fuck is a cool Luda party track.) Theater of the Mind and Red Light , Word Of Mouf put it straight to shame though. Nas and Damian is ridiculously good. There is no reason not to pack a bowl/roll one and really listen to this album

  • CAN'T....BAN......DUKE....... BOY

  • sun_god7

Nas & Marley was better. Thought that it would of debuted with more copies because of the internatinoal flavor. Well...one week down - there are more weeks to go if marketed with the correct singles. Thought the Monae would of done better too...

Whats really crazy is that the #4 album on the US Album Chart sold less than 60k copies...clearly people are not supporting the music...sad thing is this mostly affects Black music...Justin Beiber & Lady Antebellum don't seem to have trouble putting up the big numbers. We just don't support ourselves. The crazy thing is that as good as Distant Relatives & Janelle Monae's music is, they both deserved to go over 150k at least first week. But thats just the climate of music these days But one thing I can say about Distant Relatives...as we have seen with albums such as Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt, etc...is that classics sell over time & this will be no different. Props to those guys on making a phenomenal album.

    • Malmoe88

Yo my dude, Amen to that statement. We just dont support each other. And that goes beyond music.

  • YAYA TOURE

See, this is why the underground fans are the reason "hip-hop is dead". You have Nas releasing a damn near CLASSIC album and only sells 50k copies first week.. Matter of fact fuck all of you, you have no right to say whether or not rap is dead because your hip-hop credibility pass HAS BEEN REVOKED. At least Soulja Boy fans buy his shit. At least Drake fans buy his shit. Ya'll don't support the artists you love so you killed hip-hop.

    • Big Liss

To be honest, this is no different than when Nas released Illmatic. That shit wasn't selling either and it's been called the best hip hop album EVER by many in the music industry. I think as long as your goal is to make dope music, it'll sell over the time. It's well over a decade later and Nas still makes money off his first album. Soulja Boy won't have those same results...count on it.

  • Its Um

Well at least I help Nas & Talib get to those numbers and I play them everyday.

  • ****TEXAS DRUG MONEY*****

Where does Jay-Z BP3 album numbers stand now?

  • ts5000

nas and damian marley were originally supposed to an EP instead of an LP and the first single was gonna be africa must wake up this album isn't sellin cause its not that mainstream and they didn't promoted it right

  • D.D.410wutup

Fuck man. I bought Distant Relatives, and I coulda sworn that I heard a ton of dudes saying they were gonna pick it up.. Obviously numbers aren't showing. C'mon people. Sacrifice a fast food meal for something homemade, and use that money for a timeless album..

  • BRUTUS

I can't wait to hear Nas & Damian get down on the microphone. The seed of the legendary Bob Marley....., Myspace.com/Luciferson2. I'm gonna buy my copy soon...., Peace and Love to the Marley Family.

  • nixnox

Go out and support that Nas/Damian Marley joint..shit is fire...

  • Bunneh3000

Janelle is an amazing entertainer. I would have liked for her to do a bit better first week out but I think as people hear about her more and see her perform, her numbers will rise. As diverse of a sound this album is I think she'll have an international appeal if the label does her right. Kweli and Hi-Tek drop another classic. I agree with others that it isn't as good as Train of Thought but it is still Kwelity muzak!!

    • miguel Guttierres

Haven't really checked up on Janelle, but I've heard a few songs from her and they sound very nice. But sadly, she's signed to Bad Boy and we all know how Diddy is.

  • Lima

yesterday i was tellin my one white friend about the album and she was like "Cool I'm gonna go download the album right now." I almost slapped her in her face.

    • Malmoe88

well let's not get things twisted. White people download too. I'm even willing to say they were the first to do it. Napstar? But let's not turn this into a race issue although the fact is we (as african americans/black) dont support each other the way other races do. So if we can get something for free, were all over it. Cloths, music, food etc. Slapping her would not have made her do anything...(but cry or possibly go down load some hate music lol).

  • YOUNG ANGEL

Wanted to see them at #1

  • F-one

Alright check this out: First off,I saw both not moving too many units to be honest. However, what did you expect at a time where materialism is at an all time? Regardless of that, where are all the true hip hop fans? I mean,I bought my copy of distant relatives and if I had a credit card to purchase online,I would of gotten RPM by now. Point is if there is seriously only about 80,000 peope on the face of the US that even bought the album or plan to,than I don't know how I actually feel not just about the state of hip hop,but the fucking mind set of todays society. And it's people like "handy" that fortify my opinion.I bet he is as old as I am,what a shame. Fuck it,I'm moving to France if shit like this keeps on growing.

    • Ah Hell

I wanna hot ass French woman to jam on Hip Hop too.

    • HHain'talive

Come to France homy, HH is still alive arround here...50k is what best rappers sell in France and we're only 60 millions inhabitants...I've heard Distant relatives is expected to sell well in Europe, I hope it will be the case...Peace

  • That dude named Elli

Yeah it sucks that Nas & Damian didn't outsell Justin Bieber. So fucking what. I put down my 10 bucks and it hasn't left my cd player since. It's a good album. Who cares about the sales? Really? Do you really think McDonald's makes the best burger because the sell millions a day? That type of thinking will do you in. Go buy it if you haven't already. It's more than worth it.

  • A4L

Altgough there was a lot of public promotion 58K are disappointing. So it's a very good album.

  • blaqonlinedotcom

Considering promotion was basically word of mouth, and they had no single in rotation. I'd say they did pretty well. #4 on the Charts with 58,000.... given the landscape of album sales today. In the long run, with constant promotion, touring and possibly a couple videos off the album maybe the album will see decent sales

  • C-ARSON

I bought Distant Relatives and Roc Marciano's Marcberg album. I'm happy with my $20 bucks spent. I'll probably get Reflection Eternal's album after I hear it.

    • JasonCTown

Got all 3, satisfied with every one of them. Reflection Eternal not quite as good as Train of Thought, but dope nonetheless.

  • HOOD ERA

Why are people so surprised the Nas/Marley album didn't sell?? 1. Collaborative albums NEVER do well 2. This album had no promo until after it dropped (I only started seeing banners and interviews after it came out) 3. They only put out one single, and it wasn't even the best single choice or video they could have dropped. ("My Generation" as a single alone would have given them sales over 200,000) 4. They kept pushing the damn album back and people got confused about when it was coming out 5. Nas and Damian Marley's name's aren't on the front cover of the album (Which is retarded) 6. This CD wasn't in all the stores... I checked and people online have complained about this also 7. Some places actually just got this on the 25th (Yesterday) 8. Nas' last album (Untitled) wasn't promoted well and it came out 2 years ago. 9. Damian hasn't really been popular since Welcome to Jamrock in 2005.... 10. Every time they do performances they use a live band which makes their songs sound terrible and they only perform "As We Enter" which isn't appealing to every audience. The label and both Nas and Marley made MANY mistakes.... If they had fixed 7 out of 10 of those things, it would have worked out differently.

The album had major promo dude, I also saw Nas & Jr. Gong last summer at Rock the Bells. But even before that, it was promoted, just pushed back of course. When Distant Relatives came out, I went to Best Buy and they had them there (Plus, Revolutions Per Minute, copped both). Guess it depends on the demographics. I would have liked to see much more sales, but it isn't too horrible. Maybe they will pick up in a few weeks given that they are promoting the fuck outta it on Jimmy Kimmel and such.

What do you mean didn't sell? 50,000 first week units is a respectable number and again, it's only week one. This joint will go gold eventually and will likely end up being a classic album. As far as a collab album doing well, MG already said it. As shitty as Best of Both Worlds was, it did major figures. I'm not sure where your getting lack of promo from. I went to see Nas and Damian in concert LAST SUMMER when they first started touring. Plus they been on every hip hop site since announcing the album. Even with the pushbacks, the album still came out just over a year after it's announcement. The album got released as people's interest was peaked. Problem is the album got leaked a week early plus, teenage girls are in no hurry for real shit like this. I think the label did a hell of a job for once. They been touring, the project wasn't rushed, and 99.99% of the fans are more than satisfied, including this guy. I personally don't care if I have the only copy on Earth, this shit is iconic and is light years ahead of anything else. I dope album from start to finish with no filler. Niggas need to take note.

      1. Collaborative albums have done well (ex. Jay-Z & R. Kelly- mediocre album but still managed to go plat) 2. Nas and Damian were all over the place in late 2009 and early 2010 promoting the album (remember National Geographic?) 3. That's a personal opinion. As We Enter was probably their only radio-friendly single on the album without going too deep in content. 4. How could they get confused about when it was coming out when almost every news article on DX about the album had around 100 comments? 5. It doesn't have to have the name on it. It said Distant Relatives in gold, bold letters with a freakin' spear added to it. It had their faces on it which I'm pretty sure everyone's familiar with. 6. I'll agree with that. I went to Best Buy after work on the day it came out but they didn't have it yet (kinda surprising). Then I bought mine at a Target down the street. 7. Won't say anything about that... 8. Nas' last album went gold. Doesn't matter about a two-year gap. All his albums (except I Am and Nastradamus) had two/three year gaps in between and still sold well. 9. I partially agree but shouldn't this be his "comeback" album? Should've given fans of WTJ (which went gold) a big lookout for him. 10. Yeah, I can see As We Enter sounding bad with a live band. They should've performed at the most 3 or 4 songs from the album, but I guess they wanted the rest of the album to be a surprise. Worked for me...

sorry i disagree about why ppl/what ppl listen to wayne. most of you listen to wayne and thats clear from the amount of comments posted on ANY song that includes him. next everyone is acting like this "machine" just got behind wayne and YM but thats not true. wayne released FREE music for YEARS, GOOD FREE MUSIC at that, and that got the fans behind him and built his buzz to enormous proportions. at now he's just riding that wave but the success that wayne has now is from his hard work period. he's done what no other rapper seems to be willing or capable of doing and thats giving aaway great music for an extended amount of time. now i understand what you mean about his content. i would prefer he talked about something constructive as oppose to the same bs but everything he has IMO he deserves. i dont think he's the best rapper but i enjoy his old music more than most rappers and just like most of you if he puts something new out ima listen. i dont think he's a better rapper than nas but i would rather listen to him than nas which just proves that being lyrical isnt all you need these days to be great in this business and even though most of you prefer what you call "real hip hop" artists such as nas need to use more commerical beats to hopefully grab the ears of some of our youth. they need to make entertaining music with a good message which is not happening right now...lastly slaughterhouse is just a NY version of southern rappers. they dont talk about anything in most their music, just bragging and boasting. not syaing they not cold but they're no diff than most of these rappers out here. not sayin they not capable...

The difference is Waynes fans are to young or dumb to work a computer to illegally download.

the Radio is against Damian Marley and Nas they haven't played one song from the album. fuck the industry. STILL album of the year!

    • Unkoman1

I'm from the dirty dirty and it aint about NY groupies R any of that dumbness. Its about music that you can relate to, music that can inspire you. I'm not saying that Lil Wayne isn't hiphop but his "Type" of hiphop is oversaturated in the market place and it is NOT the essence of hiphop. Hiphop is about overcoming the struggle, joy, hope, the grim nature of reality, and finding some happiness in the midst of darkness. And in my opinion Lil Wayne shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as Nas when it comes to being the better MC. Wayne and his young money click can't even get past ONE member of Slaughter House soooo I don't think he'll have much chance at Nas. But that's my take on the subject. Young Money and Wayne has the "machine" churning for them right now so of course there're going to sell more. Nas and D had no were near the promotion that Wayne(YM) has and they aren't going AGAINST the grain. I mean ask yourself..."Why do I like Young Money?" Chances are its because you can put one of there songs on and see some big booty females shaking that thang and might have a chance of getting laid. If you play a Nas track you'll have to rewind it a few times just so you can catch all the similes and methaphors...not to mention if your education level isn't too high you might need a dictionary too. Sadly, this generation doesn't like to read or rewind so....Wayne(YM) sells more.

Agree homie........ Distant relatives was off the chain.so chill n smooth..real talk the wholo cd is amaing! RPM was aiight but not vintage hi tek.... props to b.o.b tho!!!!

  • Quinn Jones

wanted to see Distant Relatives at #1 but its all good, they got the support they needed, if you dont have that cd you need to get it

  • open ears / open mind

WTF is wrong with hiphop fans? Distant Relatives and RPM only sold a combined 70k. Both albums are amazing, yet hiphop fans don't seem to want to go out and buy albums these days. Everyone talks a good game when the announcement for a classic album comes out and fake fucks claim they'll cop it, but here we go again.
