Nas Says Hip Hop Is No Longer Dead

It seems as though Nas has reversed his original stance on Hip Hop's well-being, as the rapper now says it's alive.

In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Nas has revealed that he no longer believes that Hip Hop is dead.

“It died several times, but I do believe in the heartbeat of it right now,” says Nas, whose 2006 release Hip Hop Is Dead engenders discussion even to this day about the state of the genre. “There are a lot of new artists, and artists that have been around, who are kicking ass right now. I just wanted to give a boost to people and to myself, to push people to go harder. It’s a different world now.”

No word on whether Nas' next album will be titled Hip Hop Is Alive, but stay tuned for updates regarding the matter.

Let me sum up my opinion in a couple words: TURN OFF THE RADIO GO OUTSIDE SIT DOWN LOOK AT WHERE YOU'RE GOING IN YOUR LIFE GO BACK IN GET ON YOUR COMPUTER AND LISTEN TO SOME BLU,FASHAWN,DISTANT RELATIVES,OR SOME RPM. AND THEN ASK YOURSELF:WHERE AM I GOING?

  • JDP

yea new shit gonna get hip hop back, west - nipsey hussle, jay rock,PAC DIV east - wale, j.cole, wiz khalifa south - drake,b.o.b,nicki minaj, cory gunz north - the cool kids, kid cudi and plus dre,nas,jay-z,EMINEM etc still puttin hard shit out the formation of slaughterhouse best hip hop group since fuckin outkast and ugk how would hip hop possibly not be alive??

    • alfytitos

The only noteable rappers you listed are drake and niccki minaj sadly, and there big pop pushers so you don't even know if were really going to get real shit from them. Then theres kid cudi who is a genius when putting together songs but alot of people don't catch his vibe. I like slaugtherhouse and all but never compare them to Outkast or UGK. Everyone is slaughterhouse can spit I feel that but they still pushin genric rap, everything outkast does is original they got there own vibe and andre 3k rips up mics. As for as the vets jay-z is puttin out hot mainstream shit but he's a sell out and tried to jump on the lil wayne new wack shit wave. Eminem's relapse was good lyrically but I dont want to hear songs of you raping people anymore em wake up, but looking at his new track listing I dont know if he's got his shit together. Eminem might be sellin out on this album but we have to wait and see. Dr.Dre is a huge mystery box no one knows when the fuk hes going to come out. NAS is real raps last hope he just dropped distant realtives which is dope but dosen't core rap and he dropped the nigger album which was also really deep. It looks like NAS still it he just needs to put out a complete rap album, he did his black pride shit already and it was good im glad he has pride but i want some hard shit from him.

Hip Hop was never dead, it just ain't on the radio no more, any real hip hp head knows that.

  • Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

U stupid hoes are completely throwin what they mean out of context. When they say hiphop is dead they mean it has no meaning anymore, nothing is real anymore. every rapper talks about the same thing and are no longer releasing meaningful music like dear mama. even if you listen to and support hiphop its still dead, your listening isnt goin to make waka flocka or anyone else release music that isnt bullshit! if you want to resurrect hiphop listen to someone like lupe who actually has something worth hearing. Hip hop used to be about something, not everyone could get up and spit something good. now ANY ignorant black man can go say "i fuck hoes" and become an instant success. its because of weak ass degrading music that hiphop is dead

  • Assassin221

The whole "is hip-hop dead or not" debate doesn't make any sense, as long as there are people spitting dope rhymes and making ill tracks hip-hop isn't dead. Radio is bullshit and always was, I bet even during the Golden Age the radio wasn't playing raw shit. But if you limit yourself to what's on the radio, it's you who's dead, not hip-hop.

  • LakeShow

How come nobody talking bout JCole...kid is bout to take over the game...you dig?

Nothing inflicts on me greater pain dan seein people talk shit they aint knw nothin abou. Nas is 2 good 4 a mediocre to understand. Nas simply refused to trade his soul 4 d money. Hiphop aint abou d money. Nas, like evry true rapper, is jst being loyal 2 d game. I bet u luv lil` wayne and Rick Ross sucker.

its kinda true hip hop isnt dead , there are new artist like Currensy and Lupe Fiasco and the veterans like wu tang , redman & meth , ice cube , mc eiht , brotha lynch hung , Eminem , Scarface new album , Dre - Detox on the way i hope lol Talib Kweli & Hi Tek doin there thang . etc etc

  • mactan

To me Nas is one of those Mcs that are keeping it real. Without Nas, there is no Hip Hop. Nas is on point with every single word that comes out of his mouth when he is on the mic,. He is the gr8test mc alive and 2pac knew that.

    • Real4HipHop

@ IMFROMDASOUTH Pac did recognize nas as one of the greatest around, He has spoken about it in past interviews, and he has said that 'Me and My Girlfriend' was influenced by 'I Gave You Power'.

    • Crucifixo Chinedu

Uv posted d best comment i`v eva read. u`re d man.

    • Hunorix

agree, Nas is above Em lyrically right now, and is currently the greatest, as a rapper Pac was more relevant, both had equal amount of social awareness with their songs, still Pac had more, but Nas has more masterpieces than Pac

    • Fon Z

'Pac is da greatest MC & NAS knew that...............

    • ImFromDaSouth 239/404

and 2PAC new that? who is u 2 say some shit like that.. Niggas always get ahead of themselves.

  • mactan

MCs like Rakim, Korupt, KRs1 etc, they need to form a crew to actually highlight what Hip Hop is and what it needs coz cats like lil wayne and them are really going too far now,]. We need real Hip Hop on Radios/Tvs. Hip hop can do without Lil wayne, drake, birdman, and all the wack mcs that call themselves the gr8test.

Much love to Kush Nap realest shit said on this thread 1000% co-sign.

    • kush nap

pretty much. nas never takes the easy route. he coulda been dropped that album with primo, hip hop would be on his jock, itd satisfy everyone. instead he drops hip hop is dead, untitled, and distant relatives. maybe not what we wanted, but its what we got. and they all dope as fuck. hes not into being the most visible rapper. jay-z and nas couldnt be more different. jay is chasing the pop charts, popularity, hed shit on his core base to appeal to a new base. i love jigga, but no one can deny this. i dont think nas even thinks about shit like that. he just drops his albums, dreds promoting em, then goes back to creating. i do wanna see that album with preem happen though, fuck it, get all the illmatic producers back in, and drop stillmatic illmatic. niggas need to get back to being artists. fuck first week sales, radio spins, who he eating with, who he fuckin, what he drivin. make music, drop music. nas goin through some bullshit in his personal life, media outlets swarmin his shit like flies. lets talk about how he just dropped an album full of incredible verses, fuck all that extra shit. ADD ass niggas wanna know what you wearing, who you standin with, before they check the album. keep playin into the media hands you puppets. keep jockin drake, keep pumpin that bullshit the machines push on you.

    • peepitniggas

nas is weak as fuck concerin business decisions. nigga aint no don. every skeezer can come along and grab a hefty stack outta that nigga pocket- at least i respect jays hustle. nas is a bum in dat regard.

    • Hunorix

It's shocking how much hate he gets in these dire days for Hip Hop, remember that many hated Pac when he was alive, and after death he is the ultimate icon, I think some of you cats should rethink your position on Nas, he just put too much heart and soul for this music, it's just insane to pick on his music and his legacy

He is an effeminized, and emasculated Black man who kisses his surrogate father in the mouth and makes no excuses for it He is a junkie that uses every drug available to him from cocaine, heroin, and marijauna- to promethazine cough medication. LiL wayne is an ignorant, incarcerated, homosexual, junkie, wannabee-gangbanger..... every thing that a Nazi would want a Nigger to be.

  • thegreatiandi

I see we still have alot of fools on here talking album sales. Like seriously...those sales eqaute to what? Like yall breaking bread with them ( yeah @ Drucifer1983....this is still for you ). Britney spears sold more than any of these wack south hop nigga's on the airwaves, but we all know she can't sing her way out of a wet papper bag. So does that mean that Brandy sucks cause she can't sell the same units as Britney? Even though she is far supirior in every vocal way? So it's obviously how the machine pushes nonsense to the masses, and yall wack cats eat it up. What is the difference with hip hop? You have some one like Nas who is a true MC. Then you have these wack ass clones of scarface ( the movie ) selling mad crack in there songs, shooting up your block, flipping birds, pushing bricks, slanging yay...and what ever else bullshit that yall really believe they do in real life. And these niggas getting beat up at clothing stores...and yall like...naw, they real though. Fuck outa here man. The real reason hip hop is dead, is beacuse it's to easy to make a song. Im sorry...but STANKY LEG? You got these wack ass birds getting ass implants, tell yall they 23, and love to suck dick ( Manji ), and reality is that hoe is 28, and using the same gimmick lil kim used. You know know why hip hop is dead...it's because of that. Hip hop is not about the sales...never has been. But now you get a dude that airs his life out, and his experences through his songs...yall say he wack ( my nigga Budden ). But yall the same lame ass nigga's singing the hook to Slimshady's cleaning out my closet. Fuck is wrong with yall man? Even though every real cat can relate to real life shit, yall think it's weak to express it. And would rather hear some lame's wack ass hood fantasy on wax? Listening to these albums now days is like watching the movie colors with only the sound, and no picture. In conclusion to why what i love ( hip hop ) is dead and dying...look at yourself, we killed it. Next one of yall wack fucks that pull up your skinny jeans b4 you go out tomorrow, say a small prayer for the hip hop you killed with your trendy ass. Make sure your lil fro hawk, and fake ass sunglasses from the mall kiosk that have 4 or 5 gold V's on the arms that is supposed to be louis Vuitton look right as you out there banging these wack cats..talking about " no body wana hear that dictionary rap ". RIP hip hop Peace...

  • flocka !

    CASH MONEY RECORDS SAVED HIP-HOP

    • murdock08

lol maybe where your from but im from the east and that shits garbage to me.once hip hop went south it went in a horrible direction.i cant stand that gucci flocka lil this young that.wack!!!the real hard shit dont play on the radio you have to know your shit and check for it.i can tell you do none of that.

    • uzipolo-king of decatur

cash money records saved hip hop? hmmm i will take a little history lesson with this because of the time fram i might have to agree with you on this one Flocka! cash money was already fire before they went mainstream they all had a great following in the south and the great rappers around them and all the artist had hard first albulms which were the individual hot boys baby was already hood rich which the world didnt seem to understand so when he rapped about having money on records, he really meant it also at the time dmx and the ruff ryders master p were all hot at the time but what set apart cash money from the rest of the rappers because they were hood rich and had swag, but with a difference they wore white tees girraund jeans and reebox which the hood and ever city could identify with without being phny of fake, they had rappers in they click that were ALL STARS that could actually rhyme BUT when they came out with bling bling this is what saved hip hop at the time frame because even though puffy and them niggas was talking big willy style and versace shades and shit cash money was saying the same shit but with more swagger and didnt wear that tom ford shit or gucci they were just themselves the bling bling image took over hip hop and the world over and people still use it today so like i said AT THAT TIMEFRAME from 1997-1999 yeah they changed it says uzipolo king of decatur

  • Twinblades

I was born in 1989 some I guess you could say I'm a sudo 80s baby. With that being said I was raised in a Christian household so I didn't grow up on hip hop/rap music. Despite what my mom told me about rap music ( the negatives and all that) and from what I heard from the media I still wanted to listen to it. So around the late 90s I started listening to mainstream rappers like Luda, Misse Eliot, Nelly ect. What I head at the time blew me away it sounded so cool and was diff then Christian music. I never looked back after that hip hop was my genre... So for the next 7 years I listend to the radio and all the music that was playing on there never realy knowing that what I was hearing was realy garbage. I didn't come to this point into after I stopped listening to the radio. Around this time I got an mp3 player and I was able to put stuff on there that didnt come on the radio that much like common and other then underground artist. It wad also around this time that I discovered Japanese hip hop and everything changed. M- flo, kreva, shingo2, dabo, cuezero and sooooooo many others that I became exposed to my whole out look on hip hop had changed. Some time latter I started to listen to the radio again hopeing that maybe they weren't playing the same stupid music I was listeng to years ago.... I turn on the radio..... Same shit!!! I almost gave up intil I heard drakes best I ever had. I know that's not the best way to get back into hip hop but to me the song was diff then all the other bullshit that was on the radio. That bring said my standerd for hip hop has changed because of the hip hop a listen to now kid cudi, b.o.b, Outasight, drake, Asher Roth, kanye west plus all the Japanese rap I listen to. I just can't fuck with the radio anymore. Niggas keep putting us in this bad light it just seems to me artist like birdman try to make us look like slave coon porch fags and I'm sick of it!!! So to me hip hop is like the liveing dead it's alive but barely. Right now I'm listening to one of my favorite Japanese artist Diggy-MO' who musically quit frankly shits on all these other american artist. I think it's sad that I barely listen to my favorite music genre that comes from where I live smh!!!

    • Hunorix

I would say the examples you gave that you consider today as legit rap, are all part of the sub-genre pop-rap, which isn't the most credible genre in hip hop. I don't deny some of those artists I dig, but besides Kanye none of them would enter even in a top 100 relevant hip hop artists. I used to like the 90s west coast gangsta rap a lot for many years, but now I start to feel that the 90s east coast boom bap is the most legit art form of hip hop, plus the conscious rap of the late 90s.

    • uzipolo-king of decatur

ya know i have to agree with you but i wont go THAT far as far as stopping listening to it i would say 1996 for me and after that the shit really chaNGED and you are right when you give the radio a rest and come back to it its the same shit, while i didnt dabble in to find other hip hop artist like you did (well i did this 7-8 years latter from 1996)i switched to alternative rock and real soul from the seventies i mean you had to do something because there was nothing out there i think 2011 rap will be over with OR it will really be a begining to a end but on top of all this i think its stupid for older rappers to be rapping anyway so thats what i see because its a waste of time and its just plain stupid to be up there 40 years plus walking back and forth talking about throw your hands in the air also just like you i had to hear rap from other genres and other parts of the united states like you have done with other rappers in different parts of the country the conclusion-they are better than the radio studio gangstas and they will never get the market they deserve so..good point you have made on here says uzipolo king of decatur

Hip-Hop is in the same predicament as rock in the late '80s when the scene was dominated by awful Hair-Metal bands. That all changed in the following decade when bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden, who fed with that attenuated sound, changed the rock scene by going back-to-basics and released some raw ish. The hip-hop eqivivalent like eLZhi, John Robinson and all of the guys on High Water evoke memories of the golden-era, but I feel they'll never trouble the mainstream, as they're too erudite. Homeboy Sandman and Jay Electronica have a lot of buzz surrounding them, so I hope they can invert hip-hop back to its former glory, but I'm probably bein' too quixotic. Illmatic's a bona fide classic.

Even when Nas dropped "Hip Hop Is Dead", I believe Hip Hop wasn't dead at all. At the time our favorite Hip Hop artists were still droppin gems, just not on a "mainstream" basis, and they're still droppin gems to this day. *True Hip Hop heads keep our ears to the street and NOT the radio!! Divine, PEACE!

  • C-ARSON

I can't believe Nas getting all this flack for his opinion on here. Some ignorant fuckers on here that obviously know nothing of the culture. Its really a damn shame when Nas has one of the strongest catalogues in all of RAP ever and people saying he's irrelevant. I'll admit Streets Disciple was a dud but Hip Hop is Dead and Untitled were great albums. Name another rapper that has even had the chance to be interviewed by the Wall Street Journal, Thats an achievement in itself bunch of dumb fucks.

    • C-ARSON

Streets Disciple was good but could of been great if it was 1 disc not 2, that was its downfall. To me it had like 6-8 songs of like over 20.

streets disciple was hella dope, hip hop was dead sucked super balls, like super balls i give that album like a D comparing to the rest of his albums, untitled was coo but got boring cuz the beats weren't right, distant relatives is a future classic. thats my opinion i just got mad that u called streets disciple a dud, that double disc was so street that its not even funny, he went hella hard on that cd.

How can you help the motherland when you can't even handle your own business, puttin trick ass hoes in their place? Nas is not built to face real life situations. Dude lives in his own dreamworld.

hip hop aint dead...but Nas is and he should have been ashamed of himself and the record comapny for putting out that lack luster first cd that had only 5 songs and 3 skits... 5 songs and 3 skits... are you kidding me??? i still dont see what he has done for hip hop to make him one of the best in the world? i dont see it then you marry this groupie hoe and loved her up and no she is going to take you down for millions and i hope this is a message to other inspiring rappers that want to marry strippers or hoes to make they house wife i guess they need to watch plenty of episodes of the hit tv show SNAPPED! on the oxygen channel and after you watch the marathon that usual come on Thursdays, then you will see that Nas really got away lightly considering.. but let us get back to what we call hip hop(krs-1,my philosphy) depends on what your talking about are you talking about the rap,the music the artist , or the movement...lets take a look at all four shall we....and im talking on the NEW YORK take/point of view on this i will state the south and west coast point of view in part 2.......... movement-out of all 4 this is the most remarkable and the most revelent piece of the hip hop state i think it started with russell simmons just plainily showing the crackers how to ball and tocapilize off of hiphop music along with rick ruban too, the labels execs seen a gold mine of what they could do and found everything under the sun to capilize of of this by selling everything from dope to dogfood as far as hip hop is concerned and for all those crybabbies saying that those labels(jive, atlantic, etc) didnt know how to promote hip hop and said the labels didnt undestand the streets thats all bullshit and YES they did understasnd because while you was busy smoking weed and hanging on the block they were looking at the big pictureand i see nothing wrong with that this is why artist can sell out staudiums world wide and get endorsements and sponers and own rights to things and i can go on and on, but the movement is not dead at all music-its bullshit now, it has been that way since 1996 because it got lazy people wanted to sample like hell the rapping just wasnt that good and still aint and they want to dumb it down and WHEN they did dumb it down they still was scared to be original then ofcourse the execs wanted fast food production meaning they didnt want you to take a whole damn year to not only come out with a single let alone an ALBULM so because of there greed they wanted the artist to stop bullshitting get in the studio knock shit out so they can get paid the music really got mumbo jumbo when puffy did his formula for success with bad boy, then everybody and they mama wanted to copy cat which was weak the technology changed to so alot of cats from before 1996 could not keep up and didnt want to take time to learn the new software/applications/formats so that left them in the dark because they were so used to doing the pre historic method with the new technolgy change came the sound which mean you filtered out the realness meaning that if you take juru tha damaja song come clean and compare it to now thats the best example i can give you you will never get a MAINSTREAM song like that ever again which is a shame so with this the music sucks now so now we are 1-1 rap-this is clearly bullshit and i wont go into all the details because my fingers will hurt but its way bullshit now..now its about the cocaine shit i mean how many niggas real sell that much cocaine and you want the records labels to take you seriously?? in the begining it was dope as hell now its a laughing stock they aint talking about shit and there is only a handfull that really slam in NY right now...i guess the best example of this i can give is mixtape version cd Rewinnd--ahh yess, the mix tape you get it put it in the tape deck you vibe to it and you read what artist is on there and the songs, etc, you are amped you got your favorite artist crunked up(bomming and bomming and bomming in ya jeep) you are like hell yeah thats my shit they are gonna have a dope albulm, son! your favorite artist gets a street buzz that they love the streat team they got pounds the pavement you think they could do no wrong.... FAST FORWARD----now the cd comes out you pick it up you turn the back cover..you see alot of songs, but not the songs on the mixtape that you ever so fell in love with, but you like, fuck it he is still the man his shit is dope he is gonna slam then you get home, open it up you se the horrible artwork you see the songs(which is about 15 songs are more which right then and there you are in for a rude awaaking) then you see the producers..shakespeare?timberland?teddy riley? what the fuck? what the fuck is going on?? then you play track for track NOW they are singers on there?? singers? and they are rapping about hoes? hoes? damn son didnt do this on his mixtapess?? and instead of getting 5 minutes of funk you are just using the FWD button on your cd player as if you are practicing finger fucking your girlfriend i will never buy none of these niggas albulms because they never deliver they always have songs about hoes and the songs on the mixtapes(the best ones anyway) never appear on the mixtape which is bullshit and they are fooling the public by not putting out real hard material but instead they want to go what the label say then they wonder why you flop because you didnt control your own destiny so now as far as this goes we are up 1-2 Artist-they are just enteratiners, these niggas aint real and it just appears to me that they cant find a brillaint rapper that can just rap without having to wear dirty jean, tatttos, somebody else chain, holding somebody elses dope/fronted wear bootleg clothing and have to be living in the worst condtions just to get respect i mean man, really(lol) it must take alot of time and money from the labels to invest in these entertainers...i mean seriously, they talk about absolulty rap shit, they rap and make song for hoes, they aint hard most of them dont have an education, they want the plantaion without picking the crop in other words in the begining it was real why? you had REAL ARTIST and REAL PRODUCERS that put they ass on the line to make real quality music and wanted to change someones life and took thet craft seriously they had strong A&R the had STRONG development teams and marketing because then you had top PHYSICALLY goto state to state to promote to get your music heard the only other option at that time was record pool....you had to send for the artist to do your cd...not EMAIL TRACKS..they also had older people producing, not kids which made a huge difference in quality, production, creativiety and engineering.. but yeah the artis as well as the package is a clown show and slap stick at best since we are on the subject there once was a kid named DRAKE... hmmm now this kid is killing all of new york right now now check this out he came from a rich family, he was an actor first...he is light skinned,he is educated, clean cut...and has taken over lyrically and people are hating on him like a dog because he is the opposite of what you are using to seeing so how does he sell out shows, how does he commad respect why he dont talk about cocaine music so now its 1-3 meaning that with this score hip hop is dead (except for the overall movent minus the rap, the lyrics or the artist) next up the south and the west version of this conversation..plenty of homework to be continued.. says.....uzipolo king of decatur

  • Cultures Clothing

Hip-Hop Never died...but it was on Life support at one point. Garbage was flooding the airwaves while actual good music was pushed so far underground that the general masses had a hard time finding it. In 2010 however, Hip-Hop has seen a bit of a rebirth...we've had good albums this year from Nas & Damian Marley, Canibus, K-Os, Diabolic, Sage Francis, and several others. There's still a lot of garbage out there, but now at least we have a lot of good music to balance everything out. This is the best state that Hip-Hop has been in...in a long time. I'm about to turn on Blue Scholars Pandora radio station and enjoy the music.

    • TDOTMOVEMENT

Word...that K-OS album was dope! The two niggas above me don't know what they talkin bout!

  • Twizzy

hip hop is hip hop. it is music art form get over it..........R.I.P 2PAC

  • GOOD HIP-HOP WILL NEVER BE HEARD BY THE MASSES

YOU CAN HEAR LIL WAYNE, DRAKE, WACKA FLOCKA OR SOME OTHER FUCKIN WEAK ARTIST BUT AS FAR AS PEOPLE LIKE FINALE, J-DILLA, GZA, EDO G., LITTLE BROTHER....YOU HAVE TO DIG DEEP...HIP-HOP WILL STAY AROUND BUT YOU HAVE TO GO BENEATHE THE SURFACE TO GET IT...AS FAR AS POPPY RAP, IT WILL ALWAYS BE AROUND...IN ANOTHER 20 YEARS OR WHATEVER BUT THE GOOD DAYS WILL BE GONE AS THEY BASICALLY WERE 10 YEARS AGO BUT EMCEES MANAGED TO PUMP OUT GOOD ALBUMS HERE AND THERE

  • hip hop is finished, out of business, out of fasion, out period

I THINK NAS CANT SAY SHIT AND CANNOT ACT LIKE AN AMBASSADOR....NOWADAYS THE PEOPLE THAT LISTENED TO THE BOOM BAP SHIT ARE ALL OLDER AND BEYOND THAT STAGE AS PEOPLE HAVE FAMILIES, CAREERS, THINGS GOING ON IN LIFE AND HIP-HOP IN ITS PUREST FORM IS BEYOND THEM BUT THEY CAN SUBTLEY ENJOY SOME OF IT...AND THE NEW GENERATION WITH KANYE, LUPE, J.COLE, DRAKE, SOULJA BOY, LIL WAYNE, TI, OR WHATEVER...THIS CATERS TO THE YOUNG KIDS, THE YOUNG UP AND COMERS WHO ARE JUST GETTING INTO HIP-HOP MORE NOW...DOES IT HAVE THAT APPEAL THAT SHOW AND AG HAD? NO. DOES GZA AND MASTA ACE MIRROR THE STYLES OF TODAY? NO. DOES THE EMCEE PART OF HIP-HOP CONFORM WITH THE EXPECTATIONS OF TODAYS SCENE? FUCK NO! HIP-HOP HAS CHANGED....I WONT CALL IT HIP-HOP ANYMORE BUT MAYBE HIP-POP...HIP-HOP IS A TERM I CANNOT JUST USE LOOSELY, SO IF I WERE TO CATEGORIZE WHATS GOING ON TODAY, I CAN JUST SAY IT IS NOT IN SYNC WITH YESTERDAYS DYNASTY. I CAN ALSO CALL IT RAP NOWADAYS, BECAUSE ITS ALL A RAP AND GETTING WRAPPED UP. UNFORTUNATLY UNDERGROUND RAP WILL ALWAYS APPEAL TO A DIFFERENT DEMOGRAPHIC AND THE PEOPLE WILL BE BRAINWASHED BY THE AIRWAVES OF UP AND COMING CLOWNS ON THE RADIO. THINK ABOUT IT, THATS THE REAL ANSWER AND YOU GUYS CANNOT ARGUE THIS.

  • alteredscience

I have to cosign with alot of you on this one.......when you talk "hip-hop".....your speaking about emcees....not rappers, talented and creative artist.....people with something to say that speaks on real life situations and social commentary for the masses. If you trace it back when "the message" by grandmaster flash was released, the topics were what was going on in the society of the inner streets, and that laid the foundation for most emcees after that.....it was fresh, and it was real talk. But somewhere along the way...the corporate cats, and big buisnesses saw this and said "hey, this is a new form of music that the youth is into, how can we exploit it? and make it money off of it?" and thats where the decline started....The huge record companies started designing artist for what "they" thought was hip-hop.....And thats when it was titled "RAP". Like the almighty KRS ONE stated "Rap is something you do,hip-hop is what you live" I'm sorry if the younger generation just doesn't understand this....well about 90% of them don't. But thats where people like me,who come from that generation of the original essence of hip-hop must teach them what it's really all about. Don't get me wrong,it's ok to party once in awhile, have a good time and dance at the clubs to enjoy life........but life isn't a 24 party to some people,we got real responsibilities.

    • Hunorix

the truth, wish more hip hop listeners would think like you, hip hop should be again about knowledge and am glad Nas went on this direction on his latest offering

  • Hunorix

It's hard for Hip Hop to be a relevant musical art form in these times, when unfortunately listeners of Hip Hop have the lowest standards in music taste. They accept even the most untalented young rapper, if he has a buzz going on, I mean so many average cats are widely accepted who would never have a pass in Rock or Jazz, like for example Drake, Gucci Mane, Lil Wayne and others. Rappers who really have something to say are considered emo and all sorts of denigrating terms, as like Hip Hop fans hate knowledge and real talk. American Hip Hop even if has the best production, and best flows, lyrically is really falling behind other language Hip Hop scenes, where emcess to this day put heavy emphasis on complex lyrical schemes, social and political awareness, and honestly talking about themselves, which besides a few American rappers, it almost lacks totally from American Hip Hop. In my opinion American Hip Hop is in a very transitional state, here and there some artists keep on making relevant music, but nobody talks about these cats, people rather talk about the Billboard charts, as like only making it in the charts gives credibility for a rapper. I am curious if some of you understand where I am going with this message.

I feel that the one rapper that is keeping hip hop alive right now is eminem, man has been on fire lately. and i don't care what anyone says eminem is not only one of the best but also one of the realest rappers in the game hands down. even though he has alot of money he doesn't brag about it like all these other garbage ass rappers these days, he spits for the respect. And i beleive his new album "Recovery" will be a classic!

  • SeanySean

Even though we have some great new artists emerging (B.o.B. J.Cole, Jay Electronica, Wale, Kid Cudi) hip-hop isn't alive again just yet. Put it like this, hip-hop is in a coma. You know hip-hop isn't alive when weak ass mothafuckas like Waka Flocka Flame get more radio and tv play over dudes like B.o.B. and when weak niggas like Lil Wayne are considered the best.

    • MightyMike27

Hip Hop is alive now more than ever, at least in the last 10 years. You just gotta ignore what's on the radio and dig a little deeper, do some research you lazy basterds. J.Cole, Blu, Kid Cudi, Asher, C.H., The future and the present is too promising. Even Wale and B.O.B (EVEN THO THEIR DEBUTS WERE WAK POP SHYT) Lupe is on top in my book. Em, Common, The Roots and Jay still doing their thing.. Kanye's bout to release an album for the ages(with Premier, Dilla and Tip Prod.)... Just turn the radio off and get on it PeaCE!

  • NY+

Record sales don't really matter, consider all the internet piracy, it's no telling what people are really listening to. So many album sales have been hurt because of illegal downloads, you can't really say what people are really playing in their ipods. The radio doesn't dictate much either, Waka Flocka probably won't sale 50K in his first week, or go Platinum in two years! People aren't fools, people will more than likely download it for free. We still know what's hot, and what's just a "hot song", subjectively speaking.

    • ZZZZVVVVVNNNNN

hip hop was never close to dead. It's just been underground. MAINSTREAM hip hop has been dead for awhile, but hip hop has been alive and well in the underground with artists like aesop rock, immortal technique & countless others

    • thizzle dance

Tech is kinda wack. His lyrics are good sometimes, but they aint all that. He says just as much dumb shit as he does true shit. Dude just tries to kick knowledge 24/7 while yelling and not flowing or even trying to make it sound good. His once DJ, Akir, is 10x iller than him on the mic and he's also a nice producer. For some reason he's buried underground even more than Tech. If yall wanna here some excellent albums that you have never heard before check out Akir. itunes is the only place I've been able to find him. His albums 'Legacy' and 'Street Edition Volumes 1&2' are really too dope and I feel like no one knows he exists. I wouldn't lie to ya.........

Hip hop has never been "dead" and never will be. I was upset when nas said that way back when. Cause him of all people should know that hip hop is a culture and that theres allways gonna be some real dudes out there who are passionate about lyrics and flow on a good beat. So hip hop will allways be around. It had its glory days in the 90's, but know it seems as if the media wants to barry hip hop (which you could catrgorize as sophisticated rebellious individualism) in exchange for rap or whatever you call the garbage on the radio. Its like the media is being used to dumb down our people, our younger generation and jus have everyone being fucking retarded. IF HIP HOPS DEAD I MUST BE IN A CASKET- yours truly- ABRUPT

@ Drucifer1983: Are we seriously all about album sales? I hate when nigga's do that. Like you making the money that the artist makes. Sucka ass corn ball ass nigga's always wana talk about how many units some other nigga pushed. Is that nigga you? Nope. He paying your bills? Nope. The fuck outa here with that corn ball. You wana know why hip hop is dead? Here's a great example: Waka Flaka lyrics: You can me on da grove with my nigga lil cap Or my nigga triko, catch me in morrow (wud up) [? ] boy dey wild man dey gutta and dey dirty [? ] like the boy was a surgen She's a brain surgen she slurpen and burpen My chain look like detergent, green and white, diamond bright M-A-S-E made dis my chain look ridiculous Green and white diamonds call dat shit da flocka chain Soo woo to my blood you can call me da [? ] Always wearin red and I always get dat money man Waka flocka flame, waka flocka flame, waka flocka flame, betta rememba dat name He will move units with this trash. Now lets throw Nas in here...just some random song: They forgot us on the block, got us in the box Solitary confinement, how violent are these cops? They need a early retirement How many rallies will I watch? I ain't got it in me to march I got a Semi to spark, the game's in a drought Public housing, projects, cookin up in the Pyrex My set, my clique, either gettin money or runnin from homicide trail, that's if they ain't died yet Tryna be rich, STILL I'm pledging allegiance A predicate felon, a ghetto leader Lendin my poetical genius, to who-EVER may need it I BLEED this from Queensbridge, now living with my feet up And Nas barley went gold. So are we to think Nas trash cause he didn't do Wayne numbers? What are you 15? Get out the next mans pockets. This is about hip hop..not how you are all over this mans bank account. Fuck outa here...

Record sales determine what people are listening to, which determines where hip hop is headed.........Like, you cant tell that the abundance of whack cats out here now were inspired by Master P's whack ass So, what do you thinks gonna happen when The Whacka Flacka fans grow up and start rapping??............ Record sales matter whether you like it or not...........I dont use them as a guideline of what to listen to, but there a sign of where the cultures going. like it or not Im just being honest, dont shoot the messenger

I dont believe hiphop will be alive until niggaz in hiphop understands what it means to be an artist. To be an artist means to make art wether its a painting or music or anything else for that matter. And art is something made from your own vision or made through your emotion and how you feel no matter what people think. Half of these rappers dont paint pictures any more. and im not talkin about story tellin, im sayin they dont make us believe or feel what they say or get emotionally attact to the song. You dont half to agree but thats how i feel.

    • lolllllllllooooolllllllll

Nah but i think een wacka flocka he does it through emotion n wot hes feelin but of course he aint talented so it aint dt gr8 but people mus b connectin to it cuz its popular. if no one connected no1 wud listen so he cudnt carry on doin his wack shit. people will listen 2 wt dey want regardless of wot u think shud b listened 2

Nas is arguably the best rapper of all time and one of my personal faves but he gets a fail on this one. He was right on the money when he said Hip-Hop is dead in 2006, and now he retracts that statement in 2010 when shit is unbelievably way worse and all forms of art and music are at an all time low creatively due to corporate greed. Nas is just trying to keep his fame going by appealing to this wack new generation, when he should be going at them harder then ever. The 2000 era is full of gay lame clones with no talent, and nothing to say because they are programmed to push a corporate agenda down the publics throat. Hip-Hop is based on rebellion and originality and only a handfull of new artists fit the bill.

    haters always gotta hate..

  • Frank Low

How the hell is hop hop dead when WU-TANG IS FOREVERRRRRRRRRRRRR Hip POP needs to fucking die already!!!

    • Drucifer1983

Dont take this the wrong way because I love the Wu, but if you add up the sales for OB4CL2, Wu Massacre and Blackout 2, you wont even get a gold album Record sales arent the most important thing in the world, but those numbers are pathetic And Nas/Damian Marley album is only expected to do 50K the first week If hip hop aint dead, then its at the very least breathing through a respirator

  • YUNG DUCE

MY NIGGA OVER AT DEF JAM KNOW NAS MAKIN A NEW ALBUM TRILLMATIC - 2011

  • akim

Nas is the king of hip-hop,He is the best rapper alive

  • TeachYer

ish man, hip hop as a cultured died in the late 90s, it hasn't been alive since, but rap is sure alive & kicking

  • Bauce

Meh. Hip hop is much worse in 2010 than in 06 imo. I'd rather listen to the ying yang twins than the coon (brick) squad but there are some good up and comers so maybe thats what he meant

  • thizzle dance

Listen to "Carry On Tradition" if you want to understand what the HipHop is Dead album was about. "I got an exam, let's see if yall pass it Let's see who can quote a Daddy Kane line the fastest Some of you new rappers, I don't understand your code You have your man shoot you, like in that Sopranos episode Do anything to get in the game, mixtapes, you spit hate Against bosses; hungry fucks are moraless You should be tossed in a pit full of unfortunate vocalists.... ...The live-in-the-park sound, versus the studio state of art sound... We used to be a ghetto secret; can't make my mind up If I want that, or the whole world to peep it Nah, Carry On Tradition Fuck a bum wack rapper makin' his career out of dissin' Peace to the strugglin' artists and dead ones gone, we miss 'em I promise I'll Carry On Tradition"

  • da police

haha whats this dude smoking, hip hop is rollin in its grave. He just saying its not dead cause he gotta pay that child support, nas your shit is dead, you aint made a hit in 10 years, get off hovas dick

  • Anonymous

It was an interview. Nas was asked how he felt about the state of the game, so he answered. Don't twist this into "Nas Declares HipHop Alive Again!" like he was acting like king of hiphop or something (he is tho). That would be retarded, but he wasn't doing that. I felt the need to comment cuz too many of yall are bitchin that Nas is acting like he can call whether hiphop is alive. thats not what happened. just an interview The interviewer probably asked him if he still felt it was dead, and he said no. And you gotta admit, shit did look a bit worse when he dropped HHID. Some new talent has definitely showed up since then and the game in general isn't dominated by garbage. In a bunch of recent interviews Nas has been sayin his faith is restored and mentioning J. Cole and Jay Elect. dudes just speakin his mind. chill

    • b haze

cosign i only read a few of these comments up top and these people are retarded. hating on one of the best rappers alive.

  • The Ice Cold Phenom

Nas, please shut the hell up!

    • bballa69

you shut the hell up. have you heard his new album with jr.gong? yea.. ;listen to it then respond back. see if its a different response.

  • NahSon

Fuck Nas ole skeezer lovin & trustin ass. Who is this funny muthafucka to decide whether Hip Hop is dead or not?

  • Young Jeezy (the real one)

Nas bust his guns? Nas Got street credibility? nas ain't done none them shit he talk about.nas say hip hop is dead,I say Hip Hop is alive,Tell him holla at me

    • BIG DEAL ( RAPPER)

nas did sell crack if u check out his autobiography but besides that its gotta have mre balance and its starting to

    • Marty party

you sound like a idiot.. street credibility.. you are so stupid you actually also picked jeezy(the real one) as your name.. you just contribute to the demise of humans..

    • INOA

Jeezy is a homo. Thats why he called Nas to feature on "My President Is Black"

    • b haze

first off your a fag for talking shit on nas and your screen name is jeezy. second all rappers talk about busting guns and none of them do shit, they may have guns but never bust them.

  • hippatodahoppa

People act like Nas was the first person to ever say hip hop was dead.

    • thizzle dance

"Nowadays rap artists coming half-hearted Commercial like pop, or underground like black markets Where were you the day hip-hop died? Is it too early to mourn? Is it too late to ride? Is it too early to mourn? Is it too late to ride?" -Talib Kweli, 1999 But really though, hiphop has never been in such a critical condition as when Nas dropped HHID. I mean it got real bad recently. HHID was dope and I def respect Nas for saying what needed to be said. Just like Jay Z felt the need to say 'fuck autotune'. Nas and Jay are among the few rappers who are influential enough to say that stuff and get people's attention, and I'm glad they did. I don't think it ever died though. It was in critical condition, on life support maybe. The real shit was buried underground and practically blacklisted from the radio (for real, radio DJ's have some shit to answer for). But it seems like it's making a comeback. I mean lyricism is makin it's way back to the forefront. These new cats are at least trying to spit some slick shit, competing with eachother lyrically. There's no meaning in a lot of the new shit though, just punchlines, which doesn't do much for me. Wayne is the poster boy for that trend, punchlines and zero meaning or substance in the lyrics. I don't listen to Drake but he sounds like he's goin the same way. J Cole and Jay Elect spit meaningful AND slick shit. Anyway, Nas is just speakin his opinion.

    • Clown

Krs one was the first person to ever say that and nas got all the credit

  • crazy -d

wayne and his young money crew helped alot

    • ohhshyt

lol ya they help to kill it!

    • theroach513

the only thing wayne and the village people helped was pushin this skinny jean homo hip pop movement to the front of the line! fuck that fuck them niggaz nas is right hip hop has a heartbeat again... eminem is back recovery gonna be fire chamillionaire (most underrated rapper on earth) droppin venom its gonna make everyone realize they need to get back to what rap was from 90's to early 2000's! wayne and young money will die out!

    • b haze

wayne and young money are not hip hop.

  • kush nap

niggas hated on nas for sayin hip hop was dead, but if anyone got the right to say that, its nas. hip hop culture IS dead. niggas dont respect you for the skills no more. you gotta sell em with your image, before they buy into your spit game now. when nas came up, you could get put on simply by outspitting your competition. now, theres emcees on the block thatd decimate anyone on the charts, but they not gettin heard, cuz the labels cant figure out how to market someone that just wants to spit raw. streets disciple had some dead weight, but nas been doin work since nastradamus. stillmatic gods son hip hop is dead untitled distant relatives if hip hop flatlines, it aint on nas. the media is the real culture killer. mass hypnosis. media bullshit, TMZ headlines that make the music secondary to whatever bullshit gossip floating around. nas just gave hip hop a shot of adrenaline in the neck with his performance on distant relatives. keep killin em esco, nasir the epitome of an artist. he goin through some real life bullshit right now, but his music is thriving. alot of these media outlets would rather focus on nas divorce, than his incredible output, and thats a big part of the problem. dx is about the music. they holdin it down for the heads.

  • real rap 626

yo nas is best alive other then old rakim but any way eminem drops nas drops and hopefully slaughterhouse drops that will make this the best year in hiphop for a long time we love real rap

    • nuc

couldnt have said it better myself.... lupes gotta drop also. and slaughterhouse needs to be on shady.***

  • HipHopIam

Wow. Slava Kuperstein your an idiot. Obviously your not a fan of HIP HOP IS DEAD(album) or Nas, your attempt to belittle him and his work speak volumes about you. Journalist are suppose to be objective writers. Your not writing a review you moron. WhyTF did your editor ever let you near a keyboard. "No word on whether Nas' next album will be titled Hip Hop Is Alive, but stay tuned for updates regarding the matter" REALLY?

    • dj_noname

YOU are the idiot. nowhere in the article does he say anything negative about Nas. You're just a pathetic gossip girl making drama out of nothing

    • HipHopIam

"No word on whether Nas' next album will be titled Hip Hop Is Alive, but stay tuned for updates regarding the matter"

    • real rap 626

?? you need to calm down for real it honestly dosent seem to be making fun of him at all god damn

  • nastynas4life

yeah back in 2006 around there...Hip Hop was DEAD. Now in 2010, Hip-Hop is sounding much better. 2010 should be our year.

  • YOUAJOKE

NAS WAS ONLY SPEAKING THE TRUTH... HIP HOP HAS BECOME A JOKE WITH ALL THESE POP RAPPERS & THERE AUTOTUNE BULLSHIT I HEARD A LOT OF DOPE STUFF COMING THROUGH RECENTLY AND AUTOTUNE SEEMS TO BE GONE.

    • Heat86

I dont think it was autotune that was killing music... I think it was all that snappin and poppin and leanin and rockin...

  • JemDawg151

gunn starr... so your saying 'it was written' and 'stillmatic' helped "kill" hip hop? hmmm and you act like nas is the only rapper who has gotten attention from his personal life, dawg the reason his personal life garnered so much attention was because the media blew it up and what pretentious releases do you speak of? cuz the fact that dude said hip hop was dead 4 years ago? because you know thats true, you know hip hop was not the same now or in '06 than it was back in '93, '94', 95', '96, '97 so on and so forth.... i dont understand where your coming from, just because his personal life grabbed a little attention then he isn't entitled to an opinion? your argument went no where fast and has no relevance to what Nas was actually saying in the first place... to say that his personal life grabbed more attention than any of his past releases is just wrong, because then you can say the exact same thing for any other artist that has grabbed some spotlight for their personal issues, the hell is your point?

  • Lemonz

Alright Nas just announced it. Guess we can all start listening to hip hop now. I believe in him and other good rappers being spokespeople for the shit but god damn. Haha shit can be retarded and shit. It was dead, hearbeat, shit dies again. C'mon.

  • Don_Don_ThaRedDotta

LOL @ people bashin' on Nas for speaking on a semi-valid point about Hip Hop a few years ago. Nas was just keepin' it 100 about the game. It was never dead or even really all that close in my opinion, it was just tha older heads earz weren't as adapted to tha newer style of it and it was still evolving like it still is today. You know I was a proud representer of the South (snap music and all), all you saw all day-everyday was white boys (mainly) and goat mouth old ass niggaz who were strickly NewYork Biased hating on ANY and EVERY thing that wasn't Philly on up. It was sad really, you ask me, people like that were tha 1's that were truely desecrating the soul of hip hop. Some are on here too. I think people believed in Nas and were only acting outta faith rather than fully analyzing tha game in all contexts. Yeah, d4l probably put out some of the worst music ever but they also put out 1 of the most popular dance records of out time too so all in all they weren't that bad. The only thing I could say Hip Hop was missing at tha time was the raw-gritty-grimey-ignorant-truthful mafia nigga real shit, with the lyrics and the and most of all the beats. Nowadays that's all here and the game is so wide and diverse now. Thanks to people like SouljaBoy and all of them we got a much needed fresh vein in Hip Hop. Now I obviously prefer that gangsta shit but at times I find myself bouncin' and snappin out dumb. I just hope it doesn't take over and come full circle like that again lol, but who knows, maybe 10-20 years down the line we might need that happy music again. but until then I think everybody is fine with ALL types of Rap being dispursed. The game needs it and so do the people.

  • Gunn Starr

Like I said back then-hip hop died because Nas helped kill it with his sub par albums after illmatic. I am forever amazed that a rapper whos personal life garners more interest than his pretentious releases can actually try to speak for an artform that unlike other genres of music manages to achieve pronounced varied change lyrically, visually. stylistically. musically etc. but hey thats just a snippet of my opinion, doesn't mean am right

  • Divine12th

Even when Nas dropped "Hip Hop Is Dead", I believe Hip Hop wasn't dead at all. At the time our favorite Hip Hop artists were still droppin gems, just not on a "mainstream" basis, and they're still droppin gems to this day. *True Hip Hop heads keep our ears to the street and NOT the radio!! Divine, PEACE!

  • JemDawg151

no no no... the greatest rapper of all time could never be a sell out, the fuck are you thinking? the people who have the audacity to say nas is a sell out and this and that obviously have NEVER heard ALL of nas' shit, so shut your ignorant mouth... this dude has done more for hip hop then any of your lame asses could even claim to so dont speak so arrogantly when you have no idea what the fuck is coming out your mouth... and to say lil wayne is the greatest of all time..... come on now, the greatest of all time.. think about that... whoever says that needs to immediately off themselves cuz if you think that then hip hop aint your favorite genre of music... Nas can flow with the most complex of lyrics and will leave you niggas scratchin your heads cuz you dont know how the fuck to comprehend what he spits, so dont even try to... Nas has influence on EVERYONE, a lot of mother fuckers start rapping just because they heard him rap.... he can say whatever the fuck he wants about hip hop dead or alive, who the fuck are you to say its dead or alive? you don't know shit about the state of the game, you just think you do cuz you try to sound like an internet gang banger on these boards... you ignorant assholes are all fools and it seems like you never think twice before you start typing that bullshit on here, smarten up

  • Joe-Momma

This is the problem with "Hip Hop".. 1 man speaks for the entire culture/genre/industry... and we believe that shit.. That's why most people think that hip hop is garbage because of whack artist always rapping about drugs, sex and guns... They get one whiff of that and they think that's the whole culture. Then we got these pseudo hip hop heads that do nothing but remind us of how great they once were while they sell out to make a quick buck... Hip Hop ain't dead.. it never was... it was just bugging the fuck out.
