Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 5/3/2010

B.o.B. reclaims a #1 debut for the Rap genre with The Adventures of Bobby Ray shocking charts, as Devin The Dude and Cypress Hill slide.

A new Rap release finally reclaimed the #1 spot last week. Albeit a strongly Pop-influenced album, B.o.B. Presents The Adventures of Bobby Ray marks the eclipse of a five-year journey for the Georgia emcee, singer and songwriter. His Grand Hustle/Atlantic Records album features a broad spectrum of influence, genre and guests ranging from Eminem to Lupe Fiasco to Playboy Tre. The 21 year-old's debut sold an impressive 80,000 units, and places the onetime Jim Jonsin protege in the spotlight among his peers.

Further down the charts, Usher, Monica and Ludacris also repped hard for the '90s Atlanta alumni. Respectively, Raymond v. Raymond, Still Standing and Battle of the Sexes ranged between the #6 and #20 spot, as they've done for well over a month.

The Black Eyed Peas and The E.N.D. owned the #16 spot yet again. This week, the group took the crown for all-time single digital sales, with this album's cut, "I Gotta Feeling," a popular 2009 hit.

Gucci Mane's retail mixtape, Burrrprint [2] HD cracked 30,000 units sold. The DJ Holiday-hosted, Brick Squad 1017 release made a Top 20 debut last week, and features Nicki Minaj, Yo Gotti, Rocko and OJ Da Juiceman. This release marks Gucci's departure from his former business team and original So Icey Entertainment imprint.

Wu-Tang Clan member trio Ghostface Killah, Method Man & Raekwon's Wu-Massacre slipped to #156. The critically-praised collaboration was released on the Def Jam imprint, and boasts production from Scram Jones and RZA. Another Rap veteran, E-40, still maintained two releases on the Top 200 (at #190 and #191) respectively, with his EMI-released Revenue Retrievin' companion set.

Devin The Dude's first album with E1 Entertainment, Suite #420, hung on at #198, still short of 10,000 units sold. ALL I GOT TO SAY IS...WHY PEOPLE SLEEPIN' ON MY N*GGA DEVIN THE DUDE?!!! HE IS ONE OF THE MANY UNDER-APPRECIATED ARTISTS OUT THERE THAT SHOULD BE WAY MORE POPULAR THAN THEY ARE. NEED SOME SONGS TO REFERENCE HIM..."ANYTHANG," "RIGHT NOW," ARE TWO OF MY FAVES. ALSO CHECK OUT HIS CD "WAITING TO INHALE." SUPPORT MY N*GGA!!! ***P.S. LUDA SHOULD HAVE SOLD WAY MORE THAN HE HAS BY NOW. I THINK HE SUFFERIN' CUZ A LOT OF PEOPLE PROBABLY BURNED HIS CD(OR DOWNLOADED IT) INSTEAD OF BOUGHT IT. SUPPORT MR. BRIDGES.

    • metal50

Dude Luda aint sell cause his shit is WACK!!!! His radio garbage is old no one cares or takes him serious anymore!!!

  • Indiemuzik

This album should have sold more. At this point I think it would be a good idea if the government cracked down on illegal downloading. The only music that I think people should be allowed to download for free are mixtapes, but only because they're meant for promotional use. Also it's possible to combat illegal downloading because if an artist doesn't want anyone to be able to download his or her music then it won't happen. ie There's this dude named Nobi whose been releasing mixtapes online for a couple years now, but now that he's trying to get people to buy his work I haven't been able to find a link for downloading a mixtape of his anywhere. So if the government ACTUALLY stepped up to the plate to enforce this issue then I think artists will be able to get what they're entitled to.

B.O.B is good he shpuld've held back a lil coz he let a lot of stuff go on this cd, hope he has enuff in the bag for the next 1

  • $TUNTMAN

big ups to wu tang. still doing they thing. nice album but sounds more like a mixtape

  • stew

be for real man the only nerds on here saying B.o.B is pop is some old bitter east coast cats thats hoping someday the east will rise again. U complained when souljaboy came out and the skinny jeans dudes then the stanky leg ish but then somebody brings a different style that gets endorsed by u white boys favorite rapper of all time and u still hate. u waiting for dre thinking he gon sell? Dre not stupid thats why he been talking bout the same album for years now he know it wont sell in the digital age plus with all the ghostwriters hes going to use he needs to be sure it will be somewhat good. If you aint jay wayne em u not selling platinum wayne put out a fuckin rock album and still went gold so the carter 4 will sell just off hype alone. jay will comeback and sell a milli and then em will do the same

  • Opinionated

I don't see why people think this is a pop album. Its far from it, 808s was about 10x more pop than this and that still WASN'T pop. And if he reminds you all of 3k this much...well then you should embrace him because that means he's destined for greatness. Every rapper reminds you of some other rapper but as you listen more they become their own person. Meaning you were all just too busy looking for faults instead of listen and not bitching. If it isn't for you then thats good, but don't trash it for the rest of us who enjoyed the album.

    • damnitman

I copped it the day it came out and enjoy it. With that being said it does remind me of a POP album - but thats not a dis - it just means in my opinion more of the mainstream audience will be bob fans than hip hop heads - my 11 yo daughter new all the words to his single but didnt know his name - thats pop my friends - on the 3k thing - stop hatin he has a similar voice and thats it, he has several different flows and can sing his ass off, he will be relevant as long as he wants to be

  • Bill87

I honestly don't see how Chamillionaire sold about 80,000 records in his first week with Ultimat Victory and its considered a failure, but then B.o.B sells 85,000 records in his first week and its a success? Someone please explain that to me? I'm not hating at all though, I bought both those records.

    • JimK

"Because no one has high expectations from bob's sale so 85 k is more than acceptable but we had expected better sales from an artist as talented as cham,so in on his level of creativity it is very bad and remember he was overshadowed by kanye west and 50 cent face off." I don't think the above is valid. B.o.B has had a hot single for a minute now and the song is number one in the country (I think). When I heard he "only" did 85k, my first thought was is that it? Cham had buzz, but he was never as hot as B.o.B is now. I would have expected B.o.B would kill it. Yes it is a different time, like someone said, 85k now = 200k equivalent. He's also sold a gang of digital singles, which you have to throw in there. I just heard the new Airplane song and that is a banger as well, so he will continue to rock iTunes, but it is a shocking commentary on the state of the business, that the number one single holder does less than 100k in physical product. It's scary from the perspective of new artists - and old artists too. I was impressed that Cypress had the balls to put out as their first single, the song that they did, but that seriously backfired. That's what they call a deep album cut. Have they forgotten that their core fans, the people who bought their records, are white boys that get high? Repping your people is one thing, but this single is crazy.

    • bossme

that was 5 years ago..this is now..back then if u were doing it big you went at least gold(500,000) now it seems like 50,000 is the mark to hit

    • ehhh

Wrong. 85K today = about 200K 3 years ago. No one buys CDs anymore except middle school kids. That's why Lil Wayne sold a millie.

    • timG

Chamillionair also lost his steam when people realized that he doesnt cuss. Its sad but true. We watched fam record sales dwindle to a puff of smoke. But he still caked up tho............

    • Cham

The ablum is nice its not hardcore which I really dont like anyway because its not who I am. Great ablum B.o.B

  • chris 357

b.o.b album didnt sell much coz it sucks these days wen ur album sucks every1 gets to no about it quick his a one hit wander but his good at doin hooks but sounds too much like 3k

  • ITS THE MOB

Wiz goes wayyyy harder then B.O.B believeeee that

  • AxeMurder

Poor Cypress. Its obvious they put alot of effort into Rise Up. The sound is highly polished like they were at it for a couple years. And to garner the effort to get dudes like Daron Malakian and Tom Morello on it shows they wanted to push on to the next plateau, Here were are, 6 years without a studio album and these legends sell 25,000 units in 2 weeks.

  • pstyles

Anyone know the numbers on BISD???

  • Realist Talk

I dont wanna hear no one celebrating B.O.B. being #1. That is the SECOND lowest selling #1 debut of ALL TIME! And with a PLATINUM single, that makes absolutely no sense. I dont have an answer for that. All I can say is, the album must not be consistent. Chrisette Michelle who has the lowest selling #1 in history at 83,000 did NOT have a #1 single out at the time like B.O.B. does. So it make no sense for B.O.B to do those kinds of numbers. That means he's not even gonna go GOLD. I'm lost!

    • Illy

to be honest with you the album is 100000000000000000 times better than the nothing on you single, if that's what people expect when they buy this album then they are wrong, its an amazing overall CD. he reminds me of Andre 3000. he is a very versatile artist and has A LOT of potential. bootleggers are what killed his album sales.

  • ITS THE MOB

Lol, Bob is a pop artist not a rap artist.. This is why the game is dead. Sounds like a bootleg Andre 3k. Man I miss the 90's...

    • ITS THE MOB

Im not even hating on him, I heard the album and taught it was wack. I dont like his style, too many pop songs. Hes not bad, but as far as young rappers go Wiz, Wale, Drake, J. Cole all go harder then him. And his first two singles are pop songs Word APPP

    • I still believe n music

B.O.B. is nice, but he is a 3000 knock off.

    • kato3000

just pay no attention to people who criticize everything.....someone does something different then they talk all kinds of ish about them.....no pleasing you people.. just play who you like and worry about others// stop bashing any and everyone any chance you get....i loved the B.O.B. album.... because someone made an album that wasnt hardcore rap then the game is dead.... wtf.. not everyone is a walking zombie and wants to play the same ish time after time...

    • wiseboy

are yall fu**ing retards b.o.b is dope. finally a new artist that can actually spit rhymes.

  • sad

there is a "web//site" named "sexyblackwhite" for dateing or relationship, black or white singles can go there to find something sexy or beauty online

  • lolobitchniggaz

eminem is gonna move close to a milli in the first week

  • ProjectEnT

When Yall Get Tired Of Listening 2 Dat Bubble Gum!!!Check Ya Boi Out!!! reverbnation.com/j3akajthrizzle

  • pdubb

Damn, times is hard. 80k gets you a #1 debut these days? Must admit, the label picked a real nice release date to get that done. Honestly I thought it would be higher, dude had a number 1 single after all.

  • Jonan

Good for B.o.B :D I hope Bone Thugs also get some sales. I'm also glad that Cypress got some copies too

  • JayLexus

So LeftBack & Fornever didn't crack 10,000 but Burrprint has sold over 30,000? That's some bullsh*t! Who buys a Gucci Mane album?! He has to be one of the all-time worst rappers and even his mixtapes outsell dope real hip hop acts like Little Brother, Murs & Devin The Dude. Reflection Eternal is probably not gonna do better either. Hiphop heads gotta get their acts together and support real music.

    • who who

You will not like them when they blow up. You will claim they're not real hip hop.

    • JayLexus

LeftBack might be the least impressive LB album to date but it's still a solid hiphop record. Much better than Battle of The Sexes, Burrprint, Adventures of Bobby Ray and The E.N.D. combined.

    • miguel Guttierres

Who Who: Don't assume they're broke because you don't see them on TV wearing big chains and shiny grills, and popping champagne and flashing their dollars while driving around in Bentleys, Lamborghinis or Ferraris with 24-inch spinning rims. More than likely, they have enough money to make it through the day and still have enough to feed their families, have clothes on their backs and a roof over their heads. Those are the three necessities. All the extra items are just that, extra. If they're happy with where they are, then I'm happy and you should be, too.

    • who who

Real hip-hop my ass. Leftback was shit. Fornever was decent. Get off them broke niggas dick. As soon as they blow up, then you would be on some other up and coming rappers dick, saying he's real hip-hop.

    • Um Ok yep um no?

Yeah... That's real talk. I've noticed how a lot of hip-hop heads talk about how much we need to support our "real hip-hop" artists... and then they turn around and download their favorite rappers' ENTIRE discography on The Pirate Bay. Seriously?? It all starts with us. If we actually supported talented artists... the game wouldn't be so lopsided like it is now. Support real music! Peace!

  • Hip Hop Fan 7

Im glad B.O.B is having some sucess....He is one of the few artists still out that has something else to say other than the typical rap subjects of: Drugs, Violence, and Hoes..... Artists like him are a breath of fresh air compared to the usual drone MCs that dominate commercial rap (Brick Squad, Young Money, SOD Money Gang).....This is good for hip hop people....Dont hate, hopefully this will send a message to the corporate execs who are pushing garbage rap way too hard....

  • knowledge-of-self

85,000 sold is #1, sales fucking suck. people arent buying albums anymore. they're downloading the 1 or 2 singles they like and calling it a day. its a sad day for musicians as a whole, i feel.

    • miguel Guttierres

@ Who Who: What kind of a mentality is that?!

    • who who

I admit I limewire my shit. I don't owe them rappers nothing. I suggest everyone do the same.

    • PEACE KING

THE GAME HAS CHANGED MAN.... 85000 SALES IS GOOD AS YOU CAN SEE HES #1... PLUS THAT DOESNT COUNT DIGITAL SALES.... PLUS HE WENT PLATINUM WITH HIS SINGLE SO BOB IS DOING DAMN GOOD.... WHY BE SAD FOR MUSICIANS MOST IF NOT ALL OF THEM GET PAID MORE THAN YOU MOST LIKELY... FEEL SAD FOR YOURSELF....

    • Don Lopez

I SEE WHAT YOU MEAN... REALLY SAD...CARTER 3 SOLD A MILLIONN THE FIRST WEEK. ALONG WITH ALL OR MOST OF EMINEMS ALBUMS. I THINK MARSHAL MATHERS LP DROPPED 1.8 MILLION IN ITS FIRST WEEK. BOB IS GARBAGE. WHERE IS DETOX AT

  • hip POP

bob is garbage i dont care what anyone says

    • hahahahahahaha

"You obviously don't know what good hip hop music is cuz B.o.B can fuckin rhyme and spit meaningful lyrics." that has got to be the dumbest shit i ever read in my life.

    • downSOUTHcane

    • Etherboy2323

Yeah seriously. Who gives a fuck what you think? B.o.B is one of the best young artists out there (same goes for Cudi, J. Cole, and Wale). You obviously don't know what good hip hop music is cuz B.o.B can fuckin rhyme and spit meaningful lyrics. B.o.B is an artist that is bringing hope back into the hip hop/rap genre.

    • MightyMike27

I take that back it's not garbage ass music.. It's GOOD music, but for Nickelodian..

    • MightyMike27

My point exactly son.. The album is trash. Hip Pop.. Half of the songs are pretty damn good but the other half (The ones that stand out- Airplanes, Magic, etc) Garbage ass music.. But I'm gonna buy the album just cause of all the Good ass music B.O.B's supplied me with in the past...

    • stephen4

Yes, Its more pop than hip hop but its good.

  • Bpayne

It's not number one in the country just number one in the rap charts

  • chaps

its a bad time when gucci is outselling groups like Cypress Hill

  • wagwan

And to think a decade ago artists could do 700,000 - 900,000 in the first week. How times change... I wonder how much Detox will do in the first week because I'm sure a lot of people are like me...I haven't bought a record in years but I will buy it the day its out...refuse to download it.

    • Ace K Jay

wtf? Man on the moon : 100k in the first week Adventures of bobby ray : 84 K (first week) So Far Gone :73K (first week) "so far gone" sold nearly as much as B.o.B' s album in the first week and it's a bloody mixtape!!!! 7th highest selling hip-hop EP in 09 i'm not a huge drake fan but it's obvious he's doing alright looks like you'll be drinking your own piss come june 15th

    • AJS

lmfao @ ACE K JAY Are you fucking serious? I'll drink my own piss if Drake sells more than Cudi or B.o.B did in their first weeks. Then again I'm sure the ladies will come out for Drake, but I still don't think that will help. People say B.o.B is pop, wtf does that make Drake then?

    • Ace K Jay

5 years ago, Fifty did the massacre selling 1.14 mil in the first week 3 years ago, Ye did Graduation with 950k in week 1 2 years ago, Weezy did The Carter III and move 1 mil It still happens .... just watch drake/dre later this year

    • PEACE KING

DRE CANT RAP.... UR GONNA BE LISTENING TO OTHER PAOPLES LYRICS... PLUS HE DOESNT MAKE ALL THE BEATS HE HAS PEOPLE FOR THAT... DRE IS JUST AN IMAGE... BIG K.R.I.T > DRE

    • beantwn

      its never coming out

  • trizev

85k doesnt look like much, and it isnt, but most people are just going to buy the singles they like off itunes for a buck a pop. What I would like to see, would be digital sales...thats where the real bank is. How many people you think bought the bob/eminem/haley williams track? Its already all over the radio in the middle of kansas, so I imagine hes doing quite well.

I'd like to thank Hiphopdx for the trend they've started. They stopped putting up sales figures for the dearly commercially departed 50 Cent, which is a very good move. Honestly, the number of 50 dickriders on this site usually scares me. The nigga flopped too hard, admit it and lets move on.

  • icu ucme

Damn, 85K made him #1, the music world is in bad shape.
