Guru's Family Releases Statement

After the tragic loss of Keith Elam, the Elam family challenges reports of a foundation, and explains the health conditions of Guru.

In a week that has been filled with many "Rest In Peace" tributes to GURU, after the iconic emcee's passing, his family has decided to release a statement. The statement comes after a letter was issued by GURU earlier this week, one that has been dubbed "GURU's Last Words."

The Elam family's letter thanks GURU's fans and adds that they are heart broken by all that has taken place. It also goes into detail about GURU's health issues.

In the letter issued as GURU's Last Words, there is a mention of Each One Counts, a new foundation created before his death. The statement from the family differs from GURU's in that they say they have no knowledge of any foundations established by GURU.

The family's full statement can be read below:

"The Elam family wishes to thank the fans of our son/brother/father uncle/nephew/cousin Keith aka GURU for the outpouring of love, concern and support.

Our hearts are broken by the loss of someone we loved so much. GURU was devoted to his young son, who will most keenly feel his absence.

GURU suffered from multiple myeloma for over a year.  Accrued complications from this illness led to respiratory failure and cardiac arrest.  As a result, GURU was in a coma from mid February until his death and never regained consciousness.  Early on the morning of April 19th, he became hypertensive due to low blood pressure. He again went into cardiac arrest and slipped away from us.

GURU died far too young but he was, and we are, proud of all his many legendary musical contributions.

The family is not aware of any foundations established by GURU.  We know and understand that countless fans want to express their condolences and love and, to that end, we are planning a memorial event in the near future that will be all-inclusive. Please look for further details from the family as they become available.

I definitely agree there's no way that GURU wrote that letter. One thing that bothers me though is that this letter says he became hypertensive due to low blood pressure, which is contradictory. Hypertension is the definition of HIGH blood pressure! I have no idea what's going on here, and I'll still give the benefit of the doubt to his family, but somebody needs to get the facts straight so the death of GURU won't be a controversy. He needs to be honored, not have his name rubbed in the dirt through the circumstances of his unfortunate and untimelt death.

this all seems like bullshit to me! Solaar has NO right to ever dispute anything that FAMILY has...from day one he shunned the family and it think it is WRONG! the truth is that Guru is now DEAD and GONE....the family now needs to step up and kick this Solaar in his ass! maybe he just needs to do the right thing and give up trying to capitalise on Guru and his legacy.

  • x2thezee

Solar Nah dude,u r fucking up,go fuck yourself with a sharp razor blade stick it in your ass dude, this ass Solar he thinks we r stupid...fake ass Capitalist ass solar

  • Dab

Wait he never woke from the coma? Didn't a letter just get released yesterday? Damn I think Solar is pulling some shit. Which is disgusting.

  • murdock08

if he went into a coma the same day as the heart attack and never got up how did he write the letter??that shit is fake as shit

man i cant believe theres all this bullshit goin on lets embrace his legacy let solar die slow of whatever is in store for him this man taught me as a father through speakers and headphones for longer then any other father in my life his words are the gospel to me and if the youths could take his messages then it would help this shitty state of things word to life and to the god breathin in my cheeba smoke and hearing his organized kaos out my speakers

  • Always and 4ever Gangstarr!!!!

The question remains: Since Solar claims that everything has to go through him for his approval, does that apply to the viewing and funeral? I like to see that bitch Solar tell Premo, Freddie Foxxx and Big Shug they aren't welcome, lol.

    • murk city

solar doesnt have any relation to guru outside of business. the family has the choice of making it public or not, not solar. thats like your boss at work saying your fam isnt allowed to attend your own funeral.

    • GoldenTrophy

I was thinking the samething. I wonder if he'll pull that shit, if he did he would be black listed from hip hop forever.

  • freshyboi

gurus lawyer was on toca tuesdays last night and said that guru is actually 48 years old, not 43 like was previously reported in that fake ass letter

    • freshyboi

his LAWYER said he was 48 so he was 48 you morons

    • GregRodgers

      Earlier had it as 7/17/1966

    • dcollin4444

The info you got from wikipedia is from the NY Times. Here is the link (& it wouldn't surprise me...MTV News has him at 43 but I'd love to see Solar f--k this one up too)

    • Powernupe

Wikpedia - not that it is gospel - has his birthdate as July 17, 1962, making him 47, which is about right.

    • GregRodgers

It seems as if the age of Guru at 47 or 48 is correct. For you folks that want to check out Big Guru from is an interview on Bostons "Lecco's Lemma Show". It was the first Rap Radio show of its kind in Boston. In the interview in '86 Guru states that he has a college degree from Morehouse. That makes him an HS graduate in 1981-82. Believe tape is in one of the stacks in the video clip...(you will know what I mean when you watch)

    • GregRodgers

Actually...gangstarr (Keithy E, Big Shug, Damo D-Ski, Dj 1,2, B Down, Lil Smitty) Was started pre 1985 in Boston. The gangstarr (Keithy E and Primo) began in 1989 when the ubove members decided to call it quits...(Shug actually went to Prison)

    • freshyboi

yeah gang starr started in like 87, after he went to moorehouse college in atlanta and all that. that lawyer said he repped guru from 1992 to 2004 and that they were both the same age, turning 49 this year.

    • mind bending science

yeh was queit suprised by that mention that he was only 43. As i do recall it he reached into his fortie's quiet some time ago. I mean that inforrmation is definitley incorrect

  • freshyboi

Scandalous, money greed and lust In this trife life, there ain`t nobody you can trust Plus there`s no justice, it`s just us In fact, watchin` yo back it be must And each and everyday around the way gats bust And jealous so-called friends`ll try to set you up It`s called betrayal

  • kpanilaryea28

yo im tellin yall solar is a fuckin slut!! if the family didnt know anything bout his foundation you KNOW ITS SOME BULLSHIT!! the family oughtta have their own memorial as stated and invite premier not solar!!!

  • I'm at work and bored

Solar is a piece of shit. Anyone with a half of brain know that jackass wrote that letter and not Guru.

  • Ether Q

Well if Guru had been in a coma since February seems it'd be a little hard for him to write a letter on his deathbed...

  • JDDD

Guru did not write that letter, I can't believe this guy talking about DJ PREMIER like that in the letter. This is really a sad situation, especially since the fuck head wants to gain off of GURU's name. Peace to Gang Starr that was the real duo, wish they could have made up and did one last record together.

  • ASEE

I think you guys are a little quick to judge Solar's character. I don't know anything about the dude and I doubt you people do either. It's entirely possible that Guru held a deep-seated disdain for Premo--who knows?

  • PrinceMAl

Soooo... It wasn't Cancer???? So This is suspcious... I kind of knew Solar was suspect, The letter sound fraud, and had much disrespect towards Primo. A Dying man would never leave earth talking about his Ace like that. Then the family knows nothing about his charity??? I just wish in Guru's Death, that Justice will come about so that he can truly RIP and the family will have complete closure. GURU COULD NOT GO OUT WITH NO LOVE FOR PRIMO. I just know that wouldnt be in his state of mind and spirit. That's not the guru i know. NO WAY

  • RWord

I knew the letter Guru wrote was a bit fishy. Guru's family mentions nothing about Solar, and it seems strange the on his death bed, Guru will still hold a grudge against Dj Premier.

    • dirtdawg

true dat. i also don't believe that while on the death bed you would write a letter that only contains the name of the person i'm supposedly through with for years if there was beef and nothing left but grudge i am sure primo will be man enough to admit it for the sake of the fans and his rep-nothing wrong with two partners falling out!!

  • Hip Hop I am

I knew Solar was full of shit. Trying to benefit from Guru's death. Foundation my ass, Solar's Pocket Fund. Dumbass motherfucker.

  • gre

Basically, they don't want anything to do with Solar!
