July 31st marked the 4th annual Urban X-Posure – Canada’s Urban Music Awards. Toronto’s own, K-os, took home two big awards that night. He won for Best Hip Hop/Rap Recording for his first single, “Heaven Only Knows” from “Exit.” The song also took the Best Songwriting Award. Another notable winner was Kardinall Offishall, he won Best Music Video for “Ol’ Time Killing Fields.”
Speaking of K-os, I had the pleasure of seeing him live last week. He was accompanied by a two man band, one on the acoustic and one on the bongos and they put on an incredible show to say the least. The show was opened by up-and-comer Kamal, who put on a tough act to follow. He opened up with some ill spoken word and then did about a 5 song set that was loaded with thought-provoking lyrics. I also had the opportunity to interview both men for about an hour before the show, be on the look out for that interview at HHDX.
For those interested in seeing the Urban X-Posure Awards, there will be a replay airing on August 9th at 8 p.m. and Friday, August 9th on most Rogers community channels in Ontario, and at 2 p.m., Sunday, August 11 on Rogers’ Toronto network only. The show features performances by Ghetto Concept, K-os, Londa Larmond, Patricia Shirley, Blessed, X-Quisite, Jackie Richardson and Sean Oliver.
