Former HipHopDX Features Editor Andre Grant said in his “Defense Of The Struggle Rapper” editorial, “Out of all the things the Hip Hop web has vilified, the “struggle rapper” might be the least deserving of all that ridicule.” Before Kendrick Lamar became big enough for Barack Obama to sing his praises or Drake found himself making deals with Apple, they were artists without a significantly large fanbase attempting what seemed like the impossible. Hitting the top of the charts became a distant goal to making past one hundred streams of a song possibly made within the confines of their bedroom walls and gaining likes, re-post or anything else that would reach someone. Providing a weekly outlet for those getting their feet wet in the sometimes brutal sport of Hip Hop, allow us to give readers a look into tomorrow’s possibilities through “Up NeXt.”

“I don’t really remember what inspired me to rap; it was something that was always kind of just with me. I feel like my cousin Gibbs and Juice helped pushed me to go further with it. I started taking it seriously in middle school. I’ve always taken it seriously really but it wasn’t until high school that I started to connect the pieces to the puzzle. Gibbs and I started recording in my basement. I had an old IBM Think-Pad and a program called Acid with a microphone hanging from a pipe on the ceiling. It was magical! We obviously had to do better so Gibbs got good and perfected his craft in producing and engineering by recording me and some friends in his living room after school before his mom came home. From there, everything elevated.”

Upcoming Project(s) In The Work

“I just released my project Golden Band-Aids; it’s going very well. I put a lot of common real life experiences into this project and a lot of people seem to relate it. “Penny with a Hole in It” is the song that I feel reflects me the best because it involves my day to day experiences. I will also be releasing a short film for the song “Band-Aids” which is the first track on the project. The short film will also be directed by me.”
