Graffiti Icon Banksy Gets Piece Vandalized In New Orleans

September 22nd, 2008 | Author: Allen Jacobs

This past weekend, New Orleans' Times-Picayune reported that one of the recent pieces completed by art/graffiti icon Banksy had been blotted out.

The piece in question featured a boy swinging on a Lifesaver candy. The work was on Reynes Street in historic New Orleans. The work was crossed out in red spray-paint, a tactic used by many graffiti writers to defame each other and encourage new work.

Banksy is an anonymous British 28 year-old. He has never confirmed his identity, nor real name. His work has sold for over half a million dollars. In the past, buildings where the famed artist has left his mark have disassembled the painted portions and sold them in auction.

In addition to New Orleans, Banksy has believed to have recently left work in public spaces in Alabama, Brooklyn and Mississippi.
