50 Cent Explains How The Recording Process In Hip Hop Has Changed

50 Cent enumerates how Hip Hop's recording process has evolved.

Technology has made collaborations in Hip Hop much easier - but arguably far less organic.

In an interview with Complex, 50 Cent spoke on the matter, particularly in reference to earlier song of his, "Wait Until Tonight."

50 explained that often times, the production is completed prior to him laying a verse. "You got a lot of guys that make records and everything’s done for you before you get there. The producer actually made the record. It has a sample playing and a chorus, you did your verse, you have three other rappers that generate interest from different demographics rap behind you and it’s done."

Fif added a caveat, stating that there was some utility in that type of recording process. "Those records, they’re good too because sometimes those are the things that you don’t have to think about. You hear it, you go, 'Okay, I know what it is,' and you just party to it. There’s no substance to it that makes you stop and think."

The Queens emcee explained how "Wait Until Tonight" brought him back to earlier times insofar as the recording process. "'Wait Until Tonight,' for me that’s a representation of what I fell in love with in the beginning of me enjoying Hip Hop culture. With the actual writers, it’s [from] when we watch each other and see what we offer and try and top it. It was about being competitive, not just going back and forth arguing with each other. Now they think being competitive is beefing. But they didn’t use that terminology until after the Biggie and 2Pac situation went bad. They would have called it battling prior to that. They think that’s being competitive, saying something about someone else, not actually making a record that impacts."

JMJ protege, all day. You hate on 50, you essentially are hating Jay...rest in peace. Can't see the connection? Then you aren't a true Hip Hop fan. Know your history.

Why is everyone talking about how much 50 gets paid? this artical is about the recording process and how people just email verses to eachother and don't get in the studio. Plus 50 is absolutely filthy rich through his business ventures he doesn't even need money from his music, 50 is real smart because he used music as a platform for business's as well as Jigga.

"why do you think everyone works with rick ross when hes a known fraud and a liar?" So other artists won't want to work with Ross because he was a C/O for a year? Eminem used to work in a factory. Does that mean Pink won't work with him? You're reading way too much into this.

He's got a point, the music isn't the same...people email verses and beats to each other as opposed to actually getting in a studio and creating chemistry which leads to crappier music with no feeling.
    • Anonymous
The music's the same, it's the consumer preference that's different. 50 just can't accept the fact people turned on him. He's the new Ja Rule, minus the tax problems.

do we really care what 50 thinks , he still raps about street shit from his office

"Amazing how Quote-Man knows oh so much but gets checked with details that not only can he not explain, he'll just overlook it just to say he's right" Checked by who? You? lol The funny thing is all my facts can be verified. No wonder you hide behind a screen. Honestly. you sound sheltered. A chronic loner who hates on everything because well that's your job. The only reason you wake up in the morning. You can disagree with everything I say, but there's still no points for finishing last, whether on here or in the real world where it counts. You my friend will be 50 years old still asking people if they want extra ketchup. And that's cool, cause like Curtis Jackson, nobody expects anything from you.

"50 is getting payed from games albums, he dont even have to put out music hes good" But for a guy whose claim to fame was music, it must be frustrating for him to have no guaranted success with album sales now. His crew is done for. A few artists work with him, but only because they're being paid too.

"a few artists work with him but only because they are being paid to" you could say the same about most rappers. why do you think everyone works with rick ross when hes a known fraud and a liar? because he pays them! that nigga bought his way into the industry

The Artist only makes a small percentage of every Album sold. The rest goes to their Record Label. The bigger of a Record Label you're with, the less money you make from your music. The Artist make money from Music Tours, endorsement deals, and so on... This is why it's important for Artist to explore different ventures. For example 50 Cent made more money off his Vitamin Water deal than he will ever make off his music. Also, lets say an Artist signs a 1 million dollar contract with a Record Label for one Album, that 1 million dollars is not for them, its for the recording fees and so on. Another thing is well known producers are really expensive and with a million dollars you might only afford a few on your album. Not to mention you have to travel, pay rent, food, and etc... It's not as easy as people think it is!

But plenty of artists have made millions off these big labels. Alot of it rests on the artist and how much appeal they have. Some of it is talent. Some of it is timing. Alot of it is longevity. Being able to come up with hit songs even after years in the game, like Eminem does.

I Dont Even think 50 needs half the album profits I mean the biggest check he got was 80 million from reebok

"Man everybody drops mixtapes" Never said they didn't, but unlike 50, all those people you just name dropped released "official albums". Game is about to drop another album. That's two in a row. Where u at Curtis? Still waiting on Jimmy to give the green light? lol

na he doesn't. that contract ended in 05 you fool. he was on geffen from 05-08 and then signed back to interscope in 08.

The only reason everyone dropsn mixtapes is because 50 showed it was possible. People love to forget dude started the mixtape scene asvwe know it.

"and a real drug dealing history before rap" He sold drugs on the corner like hundreds of others. In fact, in his own movie, he admitted he didn't make any money off it. Plus I'm pretty sure he didn't battle columbians in real life lol Learn to separate fact from fiction.
    • Anonymous
Family you don't just start off big time. Mostly every drug dealer started on the corner. And he explained that it could be slow sure but he made money off that shit. Its how he got started doing his Rap shit. He got his advance from Columbia(i believe) they dropped him and he went into the drug business with his advance money. In the meantime he put his money on doing music and Selling crack. 50cent was really about that life. He wasn't a big time King pin but he was involved.

"Since the Curtis album which was definitely wack, 50 has dropped nothing but fire" Nothing but fire? They must have turned off your water then. Forget album sales for a moment. If Fif released an actual album again and it did 50,000, at least he could say it got released. The Red Album tanked, but at least it was an official release. Say what you will about the usual suspects people trash on here, but at least they have no excuses. They put their stuff out, and it sold enough to generate themselves a buzz and get Grammy nods. That's the definition of success, not releasing freebies on-line cause your buzz is gone.

Man everybody drops mixtapes? 50 just says his are album worthy b/c they are so dope. Wiz drops hella mixtapes before his albums, Wayne drops hella mixtapes before his albums, Jeezy drops hella mixtapes before his albums, Ross drops hella mixtapes before his albums, Fabolous drops hella mixtapes before his albums, Game drops hella WACK drops hella mixtapes before his albums... Get my drift. Don't lie to yourself.

Amazing how Quote-Man knows oh so much but gets checked with details that not only can he not explain, he'll just overlook it just to say he's right. People like him are dysfunctional and neglected in real life because people know he's full of sh*t so he comes here to spew this nonsense to the kids and those who don't really know in hopes of being championed as a smart guy. But he's a douche. The "poor" jokes are a sign of a meltdown, real people with money help those without. Besides that, Quote-Man is a vivid 50 Cent hater. In the same day, he'll talk about 50's decline and big up Nicki's decline. Keep your foot on his neck.
    • Sensaye
You say 'forget album sales for a moment', then you proceed to make your case against 50 because he hasn't had any recent grammy nominations. Let me be clear, I don't care one bit about album sales or grammy nods, or blog fodder, or tabloid bullshit...I'm simply a hip-hop fan. And everything 50 has dropped in 2011-2012 has been dope. It's raw, it's energetic, it's traditional East Coast Hip-Hop, which is what I love. The beats are boom-bap, the lyrics aren't gonna blow you outta your shoes but he's fun to listen to because he doesn't take himself so fuckin' seriously. He has a sense of humor, and he knows how to put dope songs together with fun lyrics, mad mic presence, and he has always been the best in the business at writing hooks, as far as I'm concerned. Look man, I'm not G-Unit groupie. You won't see me walkin around with no G-Unit apparel on or wearing some expensive ass headphones, but I recognize dope MC when I see them, and they're easy to see among all these other stiffs. Hip-Hop fans don't appreciate shit man. When the last of these golden age MCs are gone, and you're left with a whole generation of selfish rappers that don't give a fuck about the listeners and dance around shirtless with dollar signs in their eyes...you're gonna miss niggas like 50 who kept it rugged and tried to make actual Hip-Hop music.

This nigga dry snitchin, gettin police portection and shit so he just as big a studio gangsta as all these niggas are. None of them real or else they be doing time. Fuckin moronic hypoctires on this site. Bawse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You must be a fraud too! Don't call other rappers fake because your favorite rapper took someone else's lifestyle and portrayed it as his. 50 comes from real shit in South Side, with real beef, and a real drug dealing history before rap. Chief Keef is really about that gang life as well as a lot of other rappers who left that life alone after they started rapping. Rick Ross is a phony and being authentic is an element thatb makes your music better. But guest what, he cant perform his music from a direct result of him not being the gangsta he says he is. Them GD's has pressure on him!
