According to a familiar cliché, a picture is worth a thousand words. Your favorite celebrities—including rappers—are doing less and less press, but luckily their thumbs and smartphones still work. Instagram has provided a way for them to document their lives and/or thoroughly embarrass themselves for our collective enjoyment. The beauty of it all is that you don’t even need to join Instagram, as most rappers are perfectly fine leaving their feeds open for public viewing. And if you’d rather avoid the IG life altogether, we’ve filtered through the top rapper’s pictures and videos and consolidated all the week’s events into one convenient feed.
This week, Angie Martinez resigns from Hot 97, 50 Cent makes it clear that he's no longer friends with former G-Unit president Sha Money XL, and T.I. and Azealia Banks beef it out on social media. Check the rest of the week’s top Instagram posts below.
Wu-Tang Is For The Babies
Imagine someone naming their child after you? Or better yet, after your rap name? For a sweet second, there was a Raekwon and Ghostface Lieberman in the world and they were twins. "This is live, family named their twins Raekwon & ghostface!!! #wu4thebabies," wrote Rae in the caption for the too-good-to-be-true picture post. See, what had happened was.... Dan Lieberman (being the excited new father and ultimate Wu-Tang Clan fan) shared a picture of his twin newborns with two pieces of legit-looking paper that were filled out with the names Raekwon and Ghostface Lieberman. Dan simply wrote, "It's for the children." The Chef caught a whiff of this and excitedly shared the news with his followers. Turns out Dan pulled one over us, he later revealed (on Facebook) that it was just a joke.
Angie Martinez Resigns From Hot 97 After 25 Years
Just like that, Angie "The Voice Of New York" Martinez resigned from Hot 97 after 25 years."Today I resigned from HOT97. I am grateful to the Emmis family for my time with the company and the immeasurable way that it has shaped my life. We made history together in so many ways and I will cherish those memories and my friendships forever. This was one of the toughest decisions I've ever had to make but ultimately it is time to move on, to grow and to be challenged in new ways. Saying goodbye is always emotional and bitter sweet but I am extremely excited about the future. Thank you HOT97 and most importantly....the listeners... for an unimaginable journey. Today will be my last show. stay tuned.... Love, angie." Fans No one saw it coming. Although she will be back on the New York airwaves starting in July, she has found a new afternoon home with Hot 97's competitor Power 105.1. According to Angie, the split was amicable. And judging by this photo Funk Flex posted with his fellow NY air giant, there seems to be no hard feelings.
Game Sends Birthday Wish To Tupac Shakur
On June 16, Tupac Shkaur would have turned 43. Game was one of the many rappers who wished 'Pac a "Happy Birthday." The former G-Unit member wrote, "Happy 43rd Birthday to THE REALEST. #ThugLife." He was taken too soon, at the peak of his career perhaps, but you can't deny the influence he's had and continues to have on the newer generation of emcees. Fun fact: other artists/actors born in 1971 include Snoop Dogg, Lil Jon, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopez, Jada Pinkett Smith, Tech N9ne, Mary J. Blige and Chris Tucker.
RiFF RAFF's Silky Hair Used As Marketing Tool
I feel lied to. RiFF RAFF wrote a false promise in his caption, "JODY HiGHROLLER FLAT iRONS AT JODYHiGHROLLER.COM GET SiLKY SMOOTH HAiR LiKE MiNES." RiFF RAFF earned a hit on his new revamped website from those in search of said flat irons. Instead, the merchandise that was available included album bundles and $100 slip-on sandals (your choices are Deion Sandals, Miami Raff Slides and Iceberg Simpson Slides). If you wear the slip-ons or "slides" to a RiFF RAFF show, it will get you front of the line access, meet and greet with the one and the only RiFF RAFF (where you can take a picture and get your "slides" autographed), and VIP access to his shows for life. Worth $100 for RiFF RAFF fans? Maybe. I can't make this stuff up.
T.I. Calls Azealia Banks A "Musty Mouthed Thot"
Good ol' tweet-then-delete (or whatever the equivalent rhyme is for Instagram). T.I. was involved in a social media battle with Azealia Banks because she made fun of his wife, saying, "U want no mediocre but ... Have you seen your wife?" Banks later deleted her tweet but not quick enough because T.I. responded with the longest hyphenated insult I've ever seen. "U musty-mouthed-thot-bot-bad-body-syphilis-lipped-rectum-vomit-unimportant-ugggggly-monstrosity-of-a-maggot-ass BIIIIIIIITCCHHHH!!!!!! If u speak ill of my family again..... I WILL END YOU!!!!!! #OnPHIL #OnDOE #NoBuuulllshit people fall down stairs daily.... U better watch yo step,u ungly-ass Gremlin-baby #nerveofdisCretin #fuckouttahea." No truce has been revealed between the rappers, but back in 2012, T.I. found himself in the middle of another feud with Azealia Banks when he stood up for his artist Iggy Azalea in their short-lived beef.
50 Cent & His "Old Friend" Sha Money XL
For Throwback Thursday, 50 Cent posted a picture of him and an old friend – the usual kind of TBT picture that fills up our timelines, except that his friend's face was crossed out. The friend is Sha Money XL, the former president of G-Unit Records. "Success can turn old friend into enemies, you soft you will always lose going against me Boy. #smsaudio #animalambition," wrote 50 Cent in the caption for the picture in which Sha's face is covered with a white cross. The funny part about this is that it is the same picture used by Sha for TBT a few months back. In the caption, Sha defended 50 Cent in 50's feud with Steve Stoute. Guess you win some, you lose some.
Kanye West Delivers Surprise Performance At Dave Chappelle's Show
Earlier this month, Dave Chappelle was a guest on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and he described his first encounter with Kanye West. Chappelle recalls that he knew he was going to be a star but the star quality was set in stone when Kanye answered a call during an edit for the show and said, "I’m at the edit for the Dave Chappelle’s Show watching sketches no one has seen before... because my life is dope and I do dope shit.” A star was born. Chappelle performed at Radio City Music Hall on Friday night, one of the nine shows at the venue, and his "star" buddy Kanye West surprised the crowd with a musical performance. The set was only three songs long (watch it here) but it was a great way for Chappelle to kick off the music component in his comedy show which officially doesn't start until Monday night with Nas as his first scheduled performer.
Drake Watches World Cup Game In The Sky
It's been a busy week for Drake, who wrapped up Houston Appreciation Week earlier this week after back-to-back days of events. He got his own holiday, he set up a whole show, he even performed in that show, he took a lot of Instagrams and did it all with love for the city of Houston, Texas. Before he jet off in luxury with his feet propped up on a leather tan seat while simultaneously watching a World Cup game, he thanked the everyone who made the event a "positive and successful" weekend and promised a "bigger and better" sequel to the first Houston Appreciation Week. It's back to the studio he goes.
Beyonce Shares "Happy Father's Day" Picture of Jay Z & Blue Ivy
Since Jay Z doesn't have an official Instagram, Beyonce's account is dubbed the official account for the Carter clan. On Father's Day, Beyonce wished her hubby of six years a "Happy Father's Day" using a black-and-white shot of Jay holding 2-year-old Blue Ivy on his shoulders while walking through a tree-lined path. This is the third time Jay Z is celebrating the holiday because Blue, who was born January 7, 2012, is both Bey and Jay's first child. Confusing sentence, but the math is correct. Happy belated Father's Day to Jay Z and all the other dads out there!
Spotted: Jay Electronica & Dame Dash Watching World Cup Game
"Look who came by the galley to watch the World Cup...haven't seen him in years but he's always consistent he's wanna the very few besides my self that I've seen him check the culture vultures personally. #dontbescared," wrote Dame Dash in the caption for his picture. It's always rare when there's a sighting of Jay Electronica, who prefers to lay low unless he needs to get something off his chest on Twitter. This time around, he stopped by to chop it up with Dame, who most likely had the game on and therefore, Jay Elect had to stay to watch the rest of the game. I'm sure he lays low because of the pressure to release new music. Every time he's in a picture, the comments blow up with fans pleading for Jay Electronica to drop something new or an entire album. Ex. One of the comments said, "He got time to hang out but no album dates though. What a waste." Time to go back to the cave.
