You Sampled It Wrong: Mos vs. Cee-Lo, Premo vs. Honda

Throwback Thursday! DJ Honda & Mos Def square off against Lost Boyz, Ranjahz & Premier over a Jerry Butler sample

DJ Honda/Mos Def vs. Lost Boyz vs. Da Ranjahz
(Sample: Jerry Butler "Whatever's Fair")
DJ Honda "Travellin' Man" f. Mos Def 1998 (Produced by DJ Honda)
Lost Boyz "Only Live Once" 1999 (Produced by Ralph Lo)
Da Ranjahz "Inspiration" f. Cee-Lo 2003 (Produced by DJ Premier)
This one is a beast! "Travellin' Man" remains one of Mos Def's best songs, and probably his best sung hook to date. Honda always handles his biz too. On the other hand, Premier rocks the Jerry Butler sample with his vintage drums (albeit a bit late). Plus Cee-Lo delivers an incredible chorus. One time Roc-A-Fella artists Da Ranjahz kind of sucked though, and are an afterthought on their own song. All due respect to the Lost Boyz and their pseudo Freaky Tah tribute, but they aren't in the running here.
Overall package has got to be Japan’s finest and the mighty Mos. What y’all think?

i don't really remember hearing the lost boyz version before this, although i did have that LB IV Life album (which i'm assuming is the album that track was on). i've always been torn over which of the other two i preferred. i feel like i prefer preme's beat and cee-lo's chorus, although i love mos' chorus too. overall, i'd probably have to say that travellin man is the better song

Well I've had said postion for a decade so I must be doing something right. Granted, "sucked" may be a strong word, "mediocre" may be more appropriate. But still, wasn't a fan and not one now.

"Da Ranjahz kind of sucked"? who the hell is j-23 and who gave him an editorial position at this site? that is one of the most retarded statements I have ever read coming from a credible website.....I expect to read a comment like that from an uneducated computer fan but not from someone with press credentials. The/Da Ranjahz are/were far from wack.

The DJ Honda version is the best, but Premiere made the best song with Ceelo
