Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 2/24/2013

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis stay strong with "The Heist," while Trinidad James finds a spot on the charts with "Don't Be S.A.F.E."

Hip Hop loses its footing on the top 20 this week, but posts strong numbers down the charts. Riding the success of their breakout single "Thrift Shop," Macklemore and Ryan Lewis prove to be this week's strongest seller in the genre, helping their LP The Heist slowly inch towards gold status. Meanwhile, Kendrick Lamar continues to move copies of his major label debut good kid, m.A.A.d city in the weeks following an appearance as musical guest on NBC's "Saturday Night Live." A$AP Rocky delivers consistent numbers with Long.Live.A$AP, while artists with 2012 releases - Wiz Khalifa, 2 Chainz and Chief Keef - maintain their footing on the charts.

While it was a typical week for Hip Hop sales, the sole rapper to score a spot on the top 100 is Trinidad James, whose mixtape Don't Be S.A.F.E. makes its first appearance on the charts after it released to iTunes late last month. The "All Gold Everything" spitter initially dropped the project as a freebie, but his label Def Jam put it out as a downloadable product - no doubt achieving intended success.

Check below to see who had the strongest week on the charts.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Stay Afloat With "The Heist"

Months after releasing their collaborative debut full-length The Heist, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are still pushing units. The duo, who found success with their chart-topping hit "Thrift Shop" (unseated from the top last week by Baauer's "Harlem Shake"), become this week's strongest Hip Hop seller, moving an additional 22,000 copies of the project and upping their overall cume to 379,000 units. While it's 2,000 sold copies less than last week's haul, the pair jumps from No. 33 to 16, edging out A$AP Rocky's Long.Live.A$AP for the top Hip Hop position.

Trinidad James Mines "Gold" On Chart With "Don't Be S.A.F.E."

It's unclear exactly why Trinidad James managed to post some strong numbers almost a month after releasing his mixtape to digital retail, but this week, Don't Be S.A.F.E. becomes the sole Hip Hop release to crack the chart. After it released to iTunes on January 29th, the mixtape manages to settle at No. 96, selling 4,000 copies and upping its overall tally to 11,000 units. The Def Jam rapper, who recently performed his breakout single "All Gold Everything" with The Roots on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon," initially dropped the release as a gift to fans back in July and later re-released when his hit caught steam in October. He most recently remixed the cut to feature T.I, Young Jeezy and 2 Chainz, and is believed to be working on his official Def Jam debut.

"you have no idea how used music stores work" I didn't know this. Thanx for the info. What's interesting is record labels have been trying for years to essentially charge "rent" on CD's that these indie stores carry used. People burn X amount of copies of thousands of music and movies then sell them back. The labels/studios end up losing alot of money even though it's hard to feel sorry for them knowing they've already made a truckload off these things when they were sold new.

"when i sell my cds to a store and they sell them the artist and label sees not even a penny from it" They only buy back stuff they can turn around and re-sell. Doesn't change the fact it still gets reported unless you're buying bootlegs.

you have no idea how used music stores work. i actually used to work in one. go to google and and search "Do artists get any money from used cd sales?"

  • bswag

"artists dont get paid off used cds" It's no different than if you bought it off Itunes. The label still gets the money even if it's small change.

    • Anonymous

actually its quite different. they got paid the first time it was sold/purchased. when i sell my cds to a store and they sell them the artist and label sees not even a penny from it.

"Two Words = Financial crisis!!" Good point. I'll give you that one. Technically, were still in a recession, so people's priorities should be on their families. No doubt, but do you realize that when you go out to eat, you might drop $40-50 bucks or more. You go to a ball game, and pay $20.00 just to park, or out to a movie that costs you $50 including food. If you have money for those things, then a ten dollar CD isn't alot. I think people have just gotten spoiled with all these albums and mixtapes being thrown on-line for free. It's killing hip hop.

  • Anonymous

"you think 50 cent gonna be hurting for cash" The irony being 50 made his initial fortune off people buying his albums.

    • Anonymous

Stop stealing my quotes nigga or ill bust you upside the head with a left hook. punk ass mutha fucka

"they need my $10 for if they rich like they claim?" It's not a matter of them needing, it's a matter that everything comes with a price tag. That's called life. It would be one thing if every CD was $19.99, but most non deluxe edition albums are usually $7.99 first week. Itunes is like $1.29 per song. If you can't afford that or buy 1 album a month, then you're a cheap skate loser.

  • Anonymous

"i have to work to provide for my family so id rather see my 10 bucks go on my son and dowload the album for free thanks" Go sing your sad song somewhere else. If you have a job then you have money. It might not be millions, but when you go to a restaurant, you have to pay, right? Go to a movie, you pay, right? Face it. You want free handouts cause your cheap.

YO MAMAS CHEAP!! i got ten bucks for her tell her to come over later might even take her fat ass to chucky cheese. listen here patrner i pay for all those thing cause i have to not cause i want to, so if i can cut corners in certain areas then yeah fuck it!! life is hard these days for everyone, except private school boys like you like you and the rich bastards you're defending. your a judgemental, condesending little prick i have a good job thanks!! but yeah i'd rather spend my money on my boy than a wack as bit of music i can get at 4 free biatch! the point still stands!! tell yo mama i got her 10 bucks here mother fucker

    • Anonymous

fuck you. most of these albums arent worth the money. especially when all they do is brag about their cash and cars. fuck they need my $10 for if they rich like they claim?

  • Indicud

Two Words = Financial crisis!! we got heating bills, electicity bills gas for your car, motgage, children(if you have them) everything man and your talking bout the artists, they dont have the same worries we do, get the fuck outa here with that bullshit man!! they're already rich bastards you think 50 cent gonna be hurting for cash if i dont buy his punk ass album his son probably be walking round in prada and gucci thanks to his daddys multi million pound record deal and my daddy hasnt go one of those! i have to work to provide for my family so id rather see my 10 bucks go on my son and dowload the album for free thanks.

    • the grza

The problem is people having these same "financial crisis" will have no problem spending 10 bucks on a pack of smokes or 15 on a case of beer over buying a quality album. Plus, if you're in your 20's how bad of a financial crisis could you really be in? Majority of people at that age don't have a house, mortgage, wife and kids to worry about. Bottom line is hip hop fans are cheap and it reflects in the half ass music that's being put out. If the fans cared more maybe the artists would more effort into their projects.

      GOOD COMMENT HOMIE

"who gonna spend ten bucks when you can get at that shit 4 free" It's sad when people want everything for free. I can understand burning a few of the non commercial albums, but if a major release comes out, ten bucks isn't alot to ask. Or at least go on Itunes and download 2 or 3 of the best songs. That's like three and change. It costs artists money to put this shit out. Why shouldn't it cost the fans something too?
